lol, no, stereotypes are NEVER good. A stereotype isn't a character but a caricature of a character.... While demeanors can, and in vampire often should, appear to be along all the right lines and public perception that paints you as a stereotype is to a vampire's advantage, if that perception is fact then you just have a ... well. Let's just say that if I can accurately and completely encompass your character in a few cliched words, you're doing something wrong! Prince Maxwell from the Chicago book is a perfectly in control Ventrue Invictus ... who Embraced a brat, who is surprisingly high-Humanity for a vampire and deeply wants peace and stability and not mass-murders. The perception matches pretty closely but the truth runs deeper. The hardest part is to create a character that contains the spirit of, say, Clan Daeva of Covenant Invictus or House Tyler or your Bloodline, while still manifesting a greater depth. Anything less and you might as well be in a cartoon and that gets boring. So shake it up a little! Love origami and frenzy if someone breaks it! Be the good little Invictus who nonetheless breaks one important rule! Be surprisingly loyal! Confuse matters! Have those odd moments of compassion (Wyrm + Ghosts) that surprise people yet makes sense. You can't do an influence game without complex characters because you can't have complications without complexity.... So don't let your character be, at the heart, encompassed by a single line. That doesn't mean you have to buck all the trends and ignore the spirit of clan (the blood WILL influence you), the covenant (WHY did you pick the Invictus if you can't stand servitude and WHY did they let you join if you won't even pay lip service), or House Membership (WHY are you a known house member, then?). I guess that's the main issue that a lot of players have to wrestle with and I guess the real answer lays in the 'why'. When you're creating something that's deeply stereotypical, come up with some added depth behind the perception. Figure out the truth. The reason why Gloria Brown is a calm and composed kindred is different to James Tyler's reason is different to Torelli's reason and yet all three are pretty calm, composed, and collected. Yet they're all very different characters. Why? Their reasons are different and it colours their every move and distinguishes them from the crowd and each other. Just because Tyler does this doesn't mean Torelli would or Gloria would. They may, but it's not a guarantee. Yet all three get along because they have some similar standards in place that they adhere to and they share the same rules of the game. Except when they break them (privately). |

We should totally do some collaborative workshops on creating detailed characters. But then, I'm a massive nerd, so that might sound like a terrible idea to everyone else. |
