Haley screamed, gasping for air. She felt a pain, like a knife ripping into her and she couldn’t breathe. She had never felt such excruciating pain. She instinctively reached for Nathan in their bed, but he wasn’t there. She tried to sit up, crying out as the pain seared through her. As she pushed up on her hand, she felt the sheet was dampened around her. She thought it must had been her water that broke, but as she peered at her hand in the darkness she saw her it was covered in a dark, syrupy liquid. It was blood.

“Oh my God,” she began to cry.

“Nathan!” she tried to call out for him, as another random pain shot through her. Haley’s face contorted in pain, as she tried to get up from the bed. She managed to sit up, her feet meeting the carpeted floor.

“Nathan,” She called again, but could barely manage to get his name out. Her hand clung to the wooden bedpost, as she struggled to stand. She felt like she couldn’t move, she was hurting so much she felt paralyzed. Why wasn’t Nathan answering her? Where was he? She had to get to a phone. She was crying horribly, as she forced herself to walk. She could feel the warm blood mapping its way down her legs. She held onto her stomach with one hand, while the other found everything it could to support her. She dragged her feet along, just trying to make her way out of the bedroom.

Suddenly, Haley was seized by a viselike pain, and fell to the ground. She began to hemorrhage badly. She felt uncontrollably weak, and began to shake. She was so scared. She needed Nathan. She needed someone. Haley began to yell out, as much as she could. Hoping, praying that someone would hear her. All the strength that she was mustering up to call for help, slipped away and she could feel herself going. Haley dropped her head to the floor, no longer able to hold it up. Her eyes felt heavy, and the last thing she remembered was staring at the door, praying someone would find her, and then her world went black.

Nathan shut the door behind him, quietly. He didn’t want Haley to hear him and come out and see her Christmas surprise. One night, before the Christmas season began, Haley was looking at a baby catalog, when something caught her eye. Nathan could see the excitement in her face, and asked her what she was looking at.

“It’s nothing,” Haley tried to shrug it off.

“Don’t be a goof, show me.” He walked over, grabbing the catalog from her. On the opened page was a crib. It was a beautiful dark stained, oak crib with a gloss finish. He scanned the page, and found the price. His eyes went big.

“Six hundred dollars?” He didn’t realize a bed for a baby could cost that much.

“Yeah, isn’t that ridiculous,” Haley laughed it off.

“Besides we already have a crib.” It was an old crib that Hope had given them, from her baby brother. She remembered watching Nathan assemble it again, and doing his best to make it look nice.

Nathan looked up at her. He could see the disappointment in her eyes. It pained him to not be able to give her the things that she wanted, especially when she asked for so little. He squatted beside her, resting a hand on her thigh.

“Haley, I wish more than anything I could give you what you wanted. I made a vow that I would provide for you, and I haven’t done the greatest job at that.” He looked down, feeling suddenly depleted. It was a blow to his pride having to admit to Haley.

“Nathan,” Haley, cupped his face in her hands, making him look at her.

“You have given me everything,” Tears clouded her eyes, as she looked at the man she loved so dearly.

“I have never felt richer until the day I married you. You have given me the greatest gift. You have given me this,” she took his hand and put it on her stomach, and Nathan’s eyes fell upon it. She smiled at him, as tears streamed down her face. He looked back up at her, taking in how beautiful she was.

“I love you Nathan Danes, and as long as I have you, I have what I want.”

Nathan lifted himself up, kissing Haley with a need.

“You’re my saving grace, Haley,” he confessed to her in whispered voice.

After that night, Nathan knew he had to get Haley that crib. He scraped and saved every penny he could. Terry did everything to help him, giving him extra hours, by letting him do some of the game reports, and other jobs Terry usually did. Sam also gave him some money, telling Nathan he be doing him a favor by letting him take part in the gift. Nathan resisted at first, but then thanked Sam for his generosity. Finally after weeks of saving, Nathan was able to order the crib. He had called Hope, and asked her if she would be able to keep it at her house until Christmas, and she agreed.

Finally Christmas fell upon them. They celebrated Christmas Eve, going to the church’s candle light service, and then came home and ate dinner by the tree, admiring the lights and ornaments. They didn’t have much, but Haley worked her magic and made the apartment look really special. When they were done their celebration Haley went to bed, while Nathan cleaned up. He made sure she was really asleep, before heading out to Hope’s to pick it up.

He picked up the big cardboard box that held the contents of the crib, and moved it into the nursery. He placed it in the center of the room, and then decided to go check on Haley before starting to assemble the crib. He turned door knob slowly, doing his best to keep quiet. It was dead silent, and as Nathan peered into the room, he looked at the bed. It was empty. He opened the door more, but something stopped it from opening all the way. He looked around the door, trying to see what was interfering.

“Haley,” Nathan yelled at the sight of his wife on the floor. He slid through the doorway, dropping to knees beside her.

“Haley,” he yelled her name again, propping her up. Her face had lost all its color and as he wrapped his arm around her, he felt the wetness of her nightgown. He looked over her, seeing blood that surrounded them both. In a panic he reached for his phone in his back pocket. Blood smeared the screen as he dialed the number. Nathan looked down at Haley as he brought the phone to his ear.

“Baby,” he tapped her face lightly, tears began stream steadily down his face.

“…what’s your emergency?” He heard the voice speak up.

“Yes, my wife. She’s pregnant… and I found her on the floor,” he tried to collect his thoughts, but his mind was in a panic.

“She’s bleeding. Oh my God there is so much blood,” Nathan took in the sight around him.

“You have to hurry.”

“The medics are on their way to your home sir.”

Once he heard those words, he dropped the phone, and put both his arms around Haley. Unconsciously, he began to rock her, resting his head on hers.

“Haley, baby, please you have to stay with me.” Tears fell from his eyes and landed on Haley’s forehead. She felt so lifeless in his arms.

“You can’t leave me baby. Please, please. Haley?”

"Tragedies happen. What are you gonna do, give up? Quit? No. I realize now that when your heart breaks,
you got to fight like hell to make sure your still alive. Because you are. And that pain you feel? That's life.
The confusion and fear? That's there to remind you, that somewhere out there is something better, and that
something is worth fighting for." Nathan Scott
