Necroing

All right people, I'm getting sick of seeing posts saying "Sorry about the necro" or the like, and replies commenting that the post being replied to is a necro, or whatever. So let's get some things out of the way:

* The one-month limit is a GUIDELINE. It is NOT a hard-and-fast rule, and you should NOT worry about whether a post is only "a couple of days from being a necro" or whatever.

* If you think you're necroing, don't apologize for it, just say what you're wanting to say and be done with it. Apologizing for necroing just draws attention to it, and you want people to focus on what you have to say, not that your post may be a necro.

* Necroing is not necessarily bad. If a post adds something meaningful to the discussion, it doesn't matter if the last post in the discussion was just yesterday or several years ago.

* Conversely, if the post is devoid of content (e.g. if it's just a post saying something like "cool" or "me too" or "thanks for that", etc.), it is just as annoying on a fresh topic as an old one; the only reason we raise a guff about necroed topics is because people don't like getting topic reply notification emails for old topics, only to view the reply and find that it's just useless crap. Topics that are designed for this type of stuff (e.g. the birthday thread) are largely exempt from this, so long as posts are kept on-topic, but such topics themselves should be kept few and far-between.

* Topic starters and staffers have a certain amount more leeway than other posters in regards to necroing, but that is mainly because they are much more likely to have something meaningful to say when they post to old topics.

I think that should about cover everything; any questions or comments?

And one more thing:

* If someone necrobumps a topic with useless crap, don't dogpile saying stuff like "ZOMG NECRO FFFHDUIASHGIUEJSDFDJODSVBBBL". If you're a staffer, delete the necro post (and any posts reacting to it) without comment, and if you have something worthwhile to add to the discussion while you're there, do so without acknowledging the necroer. If you're not a staffer, and a necro post has been around for a couple days without getting deleted, you can probably assume staffers overlooked it, and report the post (but even then, don't post in reaction to it). This makes it much easier and less annoying for everyone involved (except, perhaps, the necroer, but if they're doing it habitually, we probably don't care about annoying them anyways).
