Adobe Photoshop, And you don't need it to make skins, You can just use paint or any other drawing tool. Use Machf's CAR tools to import your skins.

Click the first one if you have Windows.
Use GIMP, it's VERY MUCH like PhotoShop only it's free.
And arguably better some might say. <_<

Okay my turn: What files do you pull out to edit and where are they? And where do I put a downloaded skin or a finished skin I've made?

Then click the Ice Age .car and .3df file editor, or click this link:
http://machf.250free.com/Hunt/Carn/files.htm#file
Images for dinos are stored in their .CAR file (Located in Huntdat)
Use this tool to extract the image. Then use this tool again to import it back into the .CAR file (Don't forget to backup the original!!)

EDIT: changed the links so that people don't attempt to download an old (buggy) version.

Question/Problem:

Been trying to create skins, save them in photoshop as a jpeg and then opening in paint & saving as a 24 bit bmp (per another thread, apparently this is the only way to make photoshop work).

Instead of getting an imported skin, the .car editor's screen just goes black. Anybody else have this problem?

NNNNNOOOOOO do not download version 20.Go down more and download version 26.Because thier are bugs in the other versions that will keep you from
seeing the skin you created.Trust me i kown better myself.Because i myself did that then i downloaded version 26 and now i have 21 skins made both copy and paste and saved on car.files.

That was the bug I fixed in one of the latest versions, what you described was what happened whenever I wanted to load an image with the 4th option ("From image file", I believe). Started happening when I began using 32bpp for the images (for the 3D OpenGL display), apparently because the routine itself uses 24bpp...

Use the main site for downloading the latest version:
http://machf.tripod.com/Hunt/Carn/files.htm#file

Or the mirror:
http://machf.250free.com/Hunt/Carn/files.htm#file

DON'T use a direct link to the file itself, because it may have become outdated already. In the main site, it will be already removed, but on the mirror I've been keeping all versions as a sort of backup (though they aren't linked from the page), you shouldn't have downloaded an old version from there.

That's weird, I don't get those problems with it anymore (happened with versions 023 to 032, I believe). Have you downloaded the necessary DLLs (mentioned in the ReadMe file)? WHat bitdepth has your desktop been set to?
