Howdy, all. This is an introduction piece and I didn't know where to put it, so if a mod can throw this where it actually belongs, that'd be awesome. I'm Brad. I've been a WH40K fan for a long time(hooray for slightly-confusing fluff!), but I haven't actually picked up and played since 3rd Edition, when the Imperial Guard still existed(what the hell is Astra Militarum, anyway?). I just picked up a basic rulebook from my local GW shop the other day. But lately, I've been perusing Space Marines fluff, especially with the big push with the Horus Heresy stuff going on from FW right now. Anyway, I never played Space Marines before because it seemed to me that in order to convey the pure-blooded badassery that is a Space Marine on the tabletop, a model showing not only chapter heraldry, but some personal touches for each individual warrior is in order. And because I was, at that time, playing Imperial Guard and fielding a backpack filled with models, painting up an entire Space Marines force where the marines are not just models, but actually individual characters seemed overwhelming. I also had a problem where I wanted the army to be a cohesive unit, but I could never settle on any particular chapter completely, and I'm not nearly imaginative enough to come up with my own. I played some Space Hulk recently, which, for those who haven't done it, is just so much fun. And the guy who owned the game(a friend of a friend) had bought a set of Terminators and modelled all of them lovingly, lots of detail and personal attentions. They actually sold me on the idea of building a low model-count Space Marine army, regardless of how viable it may or may not be. So while perusing around, I found some info on Heralds of Ruin. And I'm totally sold on the idea. The idea of the Deathwatch has always really been appealing to me, and it always seemed like GW ignored them way more than they should. And so I'm sold on building a Deathwatch Kill-Team. But I have absolutely no idea how to start putting together an army list for this kind of game. When you're building your army lists, how do you start? What's the gameplay like on this small of a scale, and how does it affect your list-building? In terms of strengths, where does the Deathwatch "Codex" sit in regards to the rest(are they champion shooters, or killer assault warriors, or what?). Are there any particular selections or loadouts that clearly shine above the rest, or some that are just obvious non-starters? When going from 200 to 400 points, do you find that you keep the same core list and just hang a few more bells and whistles on it, or does the nature of the game drastically change and require a complete overhaul? I'd like to spend some time getting some background on the game and getting through the rulebooks because I'm a firm believer in What You See Is What You Get. When I played IG, I spent a bunch of time magnetizing my tank turrets so that when I wanted to swap out variants on my list, I could match the turrets. It's a weirdly restrictive personal quirk, I guess, and so I don't want to spend a bunch of time modelling, posing, painting, and basing a kickass Deathwatch Lexicanium with a jump pack(my current HQ choice based on preliminary readings) only to find out that when the model meets the table, I've made exactly the wrong HQ/Leader choice. I'm going to dig through some of the lists here as examples, but I don't know that there's a huge HoR community online, where I can find a wealth of army list ideas and battle reports. If you know of a good site, I'd sure love to hear about it. And some of your personal list-building ideas as well. Thanks for your time. |
