First off, I need to start by thanking the makers of this set of rules. You guys have saved 40k for me. But let me stop now before I drone on. One of the things in every miniature game that I find interesting is the fact that the "leader" of every army is always the toughest. What if there was a rule implemented that allowed you to create a less than heroic leader for your forces, separate from the badass hero in our army. In Troy, Agamemnon has Achilles...Game of thrones, Tyrion hasnBron, and in the 40k universe, Ravenor has Harlon Nayl, or Patience Kiss. Below, I have outlined an optional rule set I've implemented in my personal games, that represents the Leader and the tough guy in our lists to be fulfilled by two separate roles. The VIP and the Bodyguard...... VIP A leader isn't always the toughest of the bunch. The VIP represents a character who's importance proceeds his abilities. Weather it's a flamboyant and dainty rogue trader, a weasel of a planetary governor, a chosen daemon vessel trapped in a child's body, a suspected prophet in the making, or even a tau ethereal disguised as a simple fire warrior. Nominate a single core model as the VIP. This model becomes a character and is the "leader" of your force in terms of victory points and campaign purposes. Rules for the VIP below: *Becomes a character and is considered the team leader when determining victory points. *Gains a 2+ "lookout sir" only when allocating wounds to a model designated as the "bodyguard." *Must originally be a single wound model *Must be from the "core" unit choice *May select a single piece of equipment from the armory, including items designated "leader only" *Gains the rule "You Lucky Bastard...." which provides the following: Once per game, when the VIP loses his last wound, he may force his opponent to reroll the results on the Injury table. Bodyguard Behind every cantankerous old shot caller, or every stasis chair bound inquisitor(*cough* Ravenor *cough cough*) is a regular badass doing all the real work. If you opt to chose a VIP, you must designate your "Team leader" choice to be your Bodyguard. The bodyguard represents the real hero of your story, and therefore is typically your toughest and most geared out individual. While the bodyguard is your resident badass, sometimes a hero's job is to sacrifice himself for somebody more important...that being the VIP. Rules for the Bodyguard below: *Keeps all of the benefits of being chosen from the "Team Leader" category, including wargear choices, but effectively loses status as "Team Leader" when determining victory points. *Gains heroic intervention and must fight a challenge meant for the VIP if within 3" of the VIP. *If your bodyguard should fall, the show must go on. Nominate a new bodyguard from your units on the table(this excludes vehicles, walkers, monstrous creatures and of course the VIP). This new model becomes the bodyguard for the duration of the game. Effectively, the new bodyguard becomes a character, and carries the burden of heroic interventions. This has inspired me to model and paint some some interesting "useless" models to represent the VIP. Here are just a few examples for what a VIP might represent in the grim dark setting: Space marines- The VIP is a disgruntled old scout, or tactical marine who has been out of touch with the chapter for some time. Life in solitude has made the VIP stubborn and lacking in respect for authority. The VIP's disregard for chain of command is only being tolerated because he holds information vital to the chapter master that he managed to gather while in solitude. Inquisition- The VIP is an inquisitor known for his resourcefulness, not his combat prowess. Leaving the fighting to his much more capable acolytes, the VIP's reputation and political position within the Ordos is more imposing than any amount muscle mass, or a quick trigger finger. Chaos- the VIP is a chosen vessel for a bound daemon. As the daemon grows in power, he commands those loyal to him through promises of great power. Imperial guard- The VIP is a planetary governor, an important diplomat, or a Colonel who was pushed through the ranks due only to his family name, as opposed to true leadership. The VIP knows little about battlefield tactics, and has requisitioned an imperial guard platoon as his own personal honor guard. Diverting field command to the Junior Officer, the VIP watches from a safe distance. Adeptus Arbites- The VIP is a high profile prisoner being transported in the custody of a squad of Arbites. While the VIP doesn't call the shots, the Inquisition has deemed the information this prisoner holds to be of the utmost importance. The VIP's life is more important than the Arbites transporting him; something he smugly continues to remind them of. Should the VIP fail to make it to his interrogation, the inquisition would be most...displeased. If you guys have any ideas or feedback, I'd love to hear them. |

This is a very nice and neat idea in my eyes (very cineastic), altough I am straining to find someone for my Ork army which is more important and more destined to lead than the biggest, baddest, meanest, greenest of 'em all. ![]() In my experience, here it works the other way round: the smallest, weakest grot can be the one to tip the scales if he wants it or not.
