The text for the Assault Marine indicates as an option:
Literally this means that even if there is only 1 Assault marine he may take 1 of these optional weapons in lieu of his Bolt Pistol. However to qualify for a second optional weapon there must be 6 Assault marines (5 after the first = 6). However it is not legal to take more than 5 Assault Marines. Was this rule intended to allow a 2nd optional weapon at Assault Marine count 5? The entry for the Space Marine Biker has the same problem.
One cannot have more than 3, so what is the intent for the statement "3 or more after the 1st"? I would be inclined to assume this phrasing was for folks who wanted to play some sort of alternate force organization whereby these unit restrictions were removed (e.g. Max 5 Assault Marines)... however the phrasing for the equivalent rule for the Scout Biker doesn't have any such open ended wording. It reads:
This one completely makes sense given the restriction of no more than 3 Scout Bikers allowed. I'm writing Army Builder files, which is why I'm asking all these questions vs. just making a house rule and moving on. |

You can have more than 5 Assault Marines, and more than 3 Bikers, by taking a Sergeant and upgrading him accordingly (due to Squad Leader special rule), which is why the addendum for having models over the normal limit is there. As for scouts, whilst they can also have the restriction removed through a Scout Leader on a bike, I believe they are set out differently because the weapon swap is only for an Astartes Grenade launcher, as opposed to a special weapon (it may also be how the unit is organised on table-top normally - only Tom can answer the intention behind that bit really XD) |

Ahh, now it makes sense. I forgot about the Sergent special ability. Thanks! |
