Armies on Parade for 2012- repainting a classic IG army!; Praetorians getting a repaint!

This is going to be a slow burning log for this year's Armies on Parade. I want that shiny crux terminatus! Not sure if I'm going to GD yet, but thinking of giving this a go. in 2007 I painted a Praetorian army for Bobby_b2 on these very forums. I've learnt a hell of a lot and come a long way since, and given the fact I've not got time to paint a whole new army by August, bobby's kindly let me revisit the minis with an eye to getting them updated.

The main rules I've set myself are...

Nothing to be stripped and started again (no time!)
Use as quick an improvement technique as possible.
Be prepared to wince at 5 year old paint jobs

When doing them first time around, I did around 100 infantry in about a month. They're still looking in pretty good nick. Now, with the power of hindsight, a lot of small improvements will go a long way.

First poor pics are here:

Changes so far-
two layers of shading and one highlight on the pith
Red- highlighted up to bronzed flesh, and shaded down with scaly green
Blue trousers have had a thin layer of chestnut ink in the recesses (can't see this in the picture though)

Looking at it in proper light, the shading's pretty rough, but the overall contrast is ten times better to the eye!

Comparison shot with the old one:

Next up-
Army shot and plans for the board :D (in about 3 weeks...)

A lovely range of figures and a nice looking re-paint.

Shall look forward to seeing more of this thread... and then probably cry in the corner over the fact I don't have any Praetorians and that the ones on Ebay cost an arm and leg.

I don't think the shading looks rough at all. Subtle and with just the right amount of light and shade. It's a lovely effect on the hat and there is high contrast on the clothing. Good job. Bloody lovely Praetorians are. Why, oh bleeding why did they have to be limited?

Digits- 3 weeks? because I've got to get my single mini done for the May comp and that will eat up most of my allotted (sorry, allowed!) hobby time!

Mr Pope- It's the quality of photo hiding some rather shoddy blending :P
(also, keep meaning to ask, where are you living in China?)

Looking good! Have always loved the ones you did for Bobby before so a revamp with your increased skills is going to be epic.

Update time (just a few days rather than 3 weeks in the end!)

This is everything I painted for Rob last time around (about 6 weeks work?)

I've set them out in a 2' x 2' base so that I know how much space they take up for Armies on Parade. En masse they look pretty good, but I cannot repaint that many! I really want to recreate the Glazer's Creek vibe from WD 222 so I moved a few models round and got this:

Posted Image

So here's the rough idea...

-At the front you have the 'First rank fire' squad behind some sandbags (or bark at the moment!)
-At the back, a command 'hut' currently made out of 'really useful' boxes as a nod to the original film, I'd really like to have some walking wounded coming out of there as well somehow... weapons teams or something similar on the roof.
- On the right, a Chimera that's just skidded round and emptied
- On the left, a squad moving forward (probably up to another barricade) and behind them a load of artillery pieces (6 at the moment) and a Russ, though I'm still not sold on having a load of tanks.
- Center, back- the commander and his banner at the doors of the building.
- Right in the middle, a line of grenade launchers to support the lasguns with a shouty sergeant in tow
- another squad just to fill some dead space between the building and the models at the front

Original Glazer's creek

Things I'd like to do on the final board...

1) Raise the artillery about the people running to the barricade, e.g. hills
2) More barricades!
3) Have a windmill pylon with a ratling sniper up it
4) dead orks scattered on the floor at the front, wrecked vehicles in the sand around the barricades
5) something saying 'Orks sir, Thousands of them!' at the front :D
Any other suggestions?

Looking good Sparks - conceptually that is, not so much the red plastic measure sticks and tupperware boxes. Should be a slick force painted at super-quick speed (perhaps I could learn something from this). Does Bobby get them back at the end?

Pope- Nope! Lived in Suzhou for a year and travelled around most of the East coast/Northern parts. Had a great time on both occasions though, fantastic place to go to and live.

Cheers fellas for the comments so far. Law, I think the plastic rules add that extra touch of retro that's required for the 25th anniversary GD :D

Ah, Hunan is in the South. Much hotter here. I've traveled as far as Suzhou though. Anyway, less travelogue. More lovely Praetorians.

Started to bash some barricades and things, and it's starting to take shape. Obviously a ridiculous amount of stuff left to do, but it's a start!

New updates- trying to get as much done before the gf gets back tomorrow (late afternoon/evening hopefully!)

Expect more throughout the day...

Empty board

Posted Image

All the bits...

Posted Image

Preliminary placing of models and buildings...

Posted Image

End of day 1....

Posted Image

Minor changes- the silo/water tower is built, the windmill's glued, the building has a proper shape now- need to add some bits on the roof, then can crack out the textured paint.

Posted Image

Handfuls of dirt from the garden plus a load of PVA!

Then, applying a second coat of PVA to trap in all the dirt

Posted Image

(that took about half an hour, so another half hour tomorrow and it should all be done. Going to superglue the windmill on soon as well. Then I can spray some of it and watch it start to come together properly!
