As you can see from the title, this thread is a result of the jovial encouragement to do something with the mounds of unloved stuff we all have sitting about. In my case, I'm returning to my roots, my favourite army of all time: The Imperial Guard. After thinking about it for years, I'm finally confident enough in my sculpting and my patience to be able to say I will produce a Vostroyan looking army with nary a metal model in sight. Mad? Me?

You'll have seen a few of these models before, in the last update I made on my general log, but I wanted to chart their progress in a fresh and uncluttered thread as it'll be a lot easier for everyone to keep track of whats going on. That said, they've changed a little since they were last photographed as I really didn't like the idea of doing another drab and realistic looking Guard force, opting instead to pursue something brighter and more colourful. Neatly, that brings us to the first picture, and first question. . .

i vote purple as you rarely ever see purple on troops. also gives that royal guard look if you do gold/brass with it.

I would paint each up to a finished standard, then choose. Seeing just plain red and plain purple makes it a bit hard to decide.

What Gav said.

I think if you go with either i'd tone it down a touch, not a great deal but just enough to stop them looking day-glow bright.

I think the purple could work very well but agree that seeing a finished (ish) model would aid the decision making process!

Irrespective of what colour you go for Dave, it needs more... nae, must, have more cowbell.

...

That aside. Finish both up first boyo, you may find yourself settling on one over the other yourself by doing it, nevermind the finished article.

On another note, you've got my wee squad of Vossies still, haven't you? And my copy of Soul Hunter? I only ask because I need to read it again in the same way that an addict needs his next fix...

I would go for the red, looks more pleasing as of now.

Great to have yet another blog dedicated to the Imperial Guard!

Clearly, I should vote for the red, but I agree with Gav - finish both.

I vote for a finished product as well, it's hard to choose without it. Either way, this will a very characterful army. Any idea on what the style will be? Foot? Mech? Hybrid? The biggest thing man is to not get burnt out with the conversion work, as that is an extreme danger with heavily converted armies. My biggest suggestion is to constantly look for things that get you excited about the army, like books about the vostroyans, Imperial Russians, or the Napoleonic wars. As soon as you lose motivation, the conversions become a chore and not a labor of love. I can say this for the color scheme as well, painting 100 guardsmen in a complicated or difficult color scheme is pretty painful, haha.

Nice idea you have with this thread. Red if you want to be like vostroyans or purple if you wish them to be unique. Im liking the head on left very much, if these are being decided on too. :D

Id say Purple (purple with gold/brass). Makes them look distinct from the usual red vostryan amries.

That and i like purple. Used to have a purple marine chapter.

Reply time!

Digits: I assume you mean red from your typo, mate. Your vote is noted :D

Kickthtv643: Yeah, that it does. Makes you think of the Persian Immortals and Roman Praetorian Guard, doesn't it?

Gav: Yeah, I know what you mean. Can be quite tough to make that call without seeing the colour of the armour, weapons and other details.

El D: The day-glow-ness you mention is probably, in part, down to my use of a flash. I'll try and get no flash photos with more controlled light when I paint them up fully as the purple especially really aint that bright!

Mike: Certainly mate, finishing them seems to be what I need to do :P

Grizz: Vossies, yes. Book, not so sure. . . I actually don't recall when I last read anything by BL. Think it was Battle for the Abyss, and that may well have put me of for life. . .

LvK: Another vote for red? Thanks mate :D

Constable Dave: Clearly you should, but I'll get them finished before I tally the votes.

Arget8: The style of the army is going to be WW2 Russians in space, with all the training and motivation issues the Red Army suffered from in the early years of the war. I'll be lifting several concepts straight from other armies and systems, and while I won't go into too much detail now, it will be an infantry horde backed up by a handful of tanks. Thanks for the advice though, I know I'll need to keep myself motivated after sculpting the hundredth bearskin hat onto a guardsman!

Deffbert: I think thats what it comes down to, I don't want people to glance at the models and say to themselves "Oh, another Vossie army, how quaint." Granted, if they do that then I know my converting has worked an absolute treat, but I'm looking for an army that stands out in its own way. as far as the heads go, the majority of the models will have the more traditional bearskins, but I'm including the odd helmeted head to break things up a little.

DaHedd: Another vote for purple, eh? Very well!

Woaft, so many replies. . . I'll be updating at some point over the weekend with this one, got Saturday and Sunday off work so will hopefully get a bit more done to the two testers. I'll more than likely be using similar colours on both models for armour and details, as I feel it'll probably be easier to decide on the "best" colour scheme.

Peace out for now!

you could do both red and purple and use some fluff to distinguish different rank or status among the troops. like standard guard vs royal bodyguard or somesuch. looking forward to seeing some finished models mind!

I think it also depends what colour you go with for the metal. The Vostroyans are obviously red/gold but you have other options. Purple/gold would be good, but red/silver and purple/silver would be as well.

Think I prefer the purple to be honest, makes it look a little less like a vostroyan.

Agree with El D. Looks less Vossie like with the purple.
Looking good though.

Three votes for purple? Cheers chaps!

El Steve: You mentioned that the colours on the coats looked a little shiny and bright, what's the consensus now, given that the colours have been weathered a little and the lighting on the photo is better.

Peacecraft: He does have that look about him doesn't he? Sadly the majority of the models in the army will have typically daft fur hats, but there will be the odd shiny metal helmet dotted about.

Mike: Cheers mate, like I said already I think the purple will be better as its more eye catching and it'll force people to look at the models and realise that they are, in fact, all converted.
