I'm going to get a huge loan, at an astronomical interest rate. When the banks fail I'll have a load of paper worth nothing but I will have beaten the financial system :)

I always thought I'd nick a police car from work, load up the family and then ram anyone out the way who didn't obey the blue lights.

Hmm. Get up, go to work, come home, eat dinner, go to bed?

Seriously people. Do the reading. The Mayan calendar ISN'T signaling the apocalyptic destruction of the world. It's something else entirely.

I myself was just planning for a week long thing that does happend like a hurricane. I already have a backpack so i'd just have the fallowing items in it: 3-4 days of drinking water, a Brita Bottle with at least two replacement filters, a bottle of water purification tablets, waterproof poncho, extra changes of clothing, packs of freeze dried food, a MX-991/U Army Flashlight with exrta batteries, and a cudgel. Did I miss anything?

A Flaregun, always pack a flaregun.. Oh, and firelighting equipment.
I reccommend a flint and steel with a block of shaving magnesium (because that burns really hot, it makes good firelighter.)

Yup, and a pretty important tool in a survival situation - a decent multi purpose knife. You can't cut things with a cudgel can you? ;)

It depends really on how we are going to go. I mean if it was a zombie thing I'd take all food upstairs baricade the stairs and fill the bath with water and wait for a few days untill the panic had subsided and zombies where in full swing then slowly get resources and food and live out the rest of my days painting warhammer and writing a guidebook for survivors so when civilisation finally fought off the zombies they would make a film about it :) don't know what I'd do if it was anything else.

It all depends on what type of event we're talking about. Let's split these scenarios up into 3 categories.

1. No chance of survival:

Take drugs, have sex. Go out how I've always wanted to.

2. Post-Apocalypse with Rational Survivors:

Grab my survival kit and good outdoor, dark coloured clothes. Lay low and get by until normal service can be resumed. (Basically what everyone else has said)

3. Civilization Collapse [Zombipocalypse]:

This is the situation where there will be very few survivors and little to no chance of help from the government.

Grab everything for 2. also take, weaponry for me this is knives etc. This then descends into pretty dark territory so I'll stop here, but as far as I'm concerned in these situations you have to do what it takes to keep your family and friends safe.

Forget weapons, just get a good light backpack and run into the wild. Away from civilization and humans. :)

Good idea dave! Allow me to follow that formula:

1. No chance of survival:
Do my family and loved ones before I do myself.

2. Post-Apocalypse with Rational Survivors:

Hunker down in one of the valleys on the moors up near where I live - lots of sheep, plenty of shelter in the valleys. Also relatively isolated from the rest of the world. Stash up as many good pairs of boots as I can.

3. Civilization Collapse [Zombipocalypse]:

Same plan as scenario two, they have shotguns on the moors. Head for TA Centre (assuming it is left wide open with dead soldiers everywhere) and arm oneself with a selection of weapons which I can use ie Browning Pistol and SA80. Then do my best to survive. Its probably not going to be very fun...

Get out and become part of a gang of roaming bandits that burn and pillage? Like in the old viking days?
