I've always like the idea of using cards to identify units in war gaming. Warmachine and Hordes have them but (in my ignorance) they are skirmishes games. So it's one character per unit. Don't play and never actually read the game rules. I've been called the guy who likes to fill out sheets. And I like to create them as well, almost more than filling them. So with the help of the Magic Set Editor, I've created templates for Warhammer 40k units. Right now I have three templates for standard units. These will probably be revised as I continue working with templates and I have other templates planned for vehicles, weapons, and rules. As Games Workshop doesn't want stats to be listed on anything they don't actually create, I am providing samples with placeholders only to let you preview the cards with content. I've used an images of Digits Drogan minis (With permission. Thank you.) as the image for the cards. Same image for all three cards. The first one is the standard look of CCG cards like MTG with the name, cost at the top, the unit image in the middle, and the stats under. ![]() The second one has the same layout but the image occupies the entire face of the card. ![]() The third one and the one I like the most right now has the name and the number of minis in the unit at the top, the cost and stats in a column on the left, the image on the right and the Wargear and Special rules boxes at the bottom. ![]() While testing the cards, I realized that it would be better to have more room for the wargear and less room for the special rules. So I modified these two boxes in my last card to see if it would work better. I welcome and encourage comments and suggestions for the cards. I am currently working on a vehicle card with the stats on the side. The vehicule card will be in landscape format. I still have some detail work to do on them but they are fairly usable as they are. Good thing is once the data is entered, you can change the template without losing anything. I made the current files available in my 4shared folder (W40K_Unit_Card.zip). I know some people don't like 4shared but it's the most practical means for me of getting the file out and updating it. |

Great system, have downloaded the card program (to make space wolf card) I personally like the 1st design. Could I have the FOC icons you are using please. Edit, could you also post the template files? Edited by Octavian Lars, 18 Nov 2011, 06:58 PM.

I kinda miss the old unit forms myself. They were a great way to keep the stats for a squad. Allowing you to build modular armies very easily! |

@Octavian: Are you talking about the templates to use in the Magic Set Editor? If so, the link is at the end of the first post. People have to learn to read the entire thread. Hey, I've been guilty of skimming through threads myself. If the link doesn't provide what you want, you'll have to be a little more precise. @IGKnot: That is the idea behind the cards. Using MSE, I can enter the values for a squad using the slash between the values for the sergeant and the squad members when these are different. I would have provided an actual sample with stats but that is very much against the policy of Games Workshop. I wouldn't even venture in mentioning stats they publish on their own website. |

An interesting and useful idea, might have to knock some of these up for BFG as I get sick of writing down the stats for my ships every single game

As a relative newcomer these would save me alot of scanning time through the codex. For simple stuff ws/bs etc i have a memory like a seive so these would really save me some time. Design wise i think 3rd one works best imho. Now to see if i can avoid doing real work and mess around with that software. |

It's been a while and I haven't been working on these that much. Work has progressed on the Vehicle card but I can only ask you to be patient (or generous) with me as I find that it's hard to allocate time to this project. So many things to do, so little time. Anyhow, I'm not here to complain but to tell you that I have updated the W40k card set to include a new set for Wargear. Yes, you can now have cards for your wargear. the card look like that. ![]() It's a separate set as the columns (which I am having problem with) don't really match with the regular unit columns. There really is only one column that can be shared and it's the strength. No point in trying to include the new columns so I created another set. I have also created an icon for the standard card set. I am currently using artwork that I didn't get permission to use (It's not GW) so it might go down as I did ask for permission but still didn't get any response. I'll keep working on this on an infrequent basis. I'm TERRIBLY UNRELIABLE for things like this. :*) I will eventually get the vehicle card up and I might have some changes for the unit cards as I am realizing that it might interesting to have the unit type listed as part of the unit (such as rough riders). To make it easier for people, I'm repeating the location of the file. I made the current files available in my 4shared folder (W40K_Unit_Card.zip). |
