I'm getting back into 40k after a long, long hiatus, and have put together an IG list. Mind you, I don't own any models yet, so I'm putting this together to figure out what I need. Any criticism is welcome. I'd like to know what I should change before I start buying, gluing and painting. HQ: Company Command Squad Company Commander armed with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon 4 Veterans armed with: Medi-pac, Regimental Standard, Vox Caster, Heavy Flamer (to keep enemies at bay) Master of Ordinance (he's like a Basilisk!) Officer of the Fleet 1 Bodyguard All are wearing Carapace Armor (because they're pussies and don't want to die) Lord Commissar Armed with a Power Weapon and Carapace Armor ELITES: Stormtrooper Squad 10 Troops, with 2 Meltas (These guys are for dropping in and tearing tanks apart.) Stormtrooper Squad 5 Troops, with 2 Flamers (These are to cut swathes into enemy troops) TROOPS: Platoon 1 Platoon Commander with Bolt Pistol 4 Guardsmen with 4 Grenade Launchers Infantry Squad 1 Sergeant with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon Commissar with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon 9 Guardsmen with 1 Flamer Infantry Squad 2 Sergeant with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon Commissar with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon 9 Guardsmen with 1 Flamer Heavy Weapons Squad With 3 Lascannons Platoon 2 Platoon Commander with Bolt Pistol & Power Fist 4 Guardsmen with Standard, 2 Flamers, 1 Melta & Krak Grenades Infantry Squad 1 Sergeant with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon Commissar with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon 9 Guardsmen with 1 Melta Infantry Squad 2 Sergeant with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon Commissar with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon 9 Guardsmen with 1 Plasma, and Krak Grenades Heavy Weapons Squad With 3 Lascannons Veteran Squad Sergeant w/ Bolt Pistol & Power Fist 9 other Men with Shotguns & 2 Flamers Forward Sentry Doctrine FAST ATTACK: Scout Sentinel with Lascannon Scout Sentinel with Lascannon Scout Sentinel with Lascannon HEAVY SUPPORT: Lehman Russ with Battle Cannon, Heavy Bolter hull weapon, Heavy Bolter sponsons, & Pintle-Mounted Storm Bolter Ordnance Battery: Basilisk with Heavy Bolter hull weapon And that's it! Grand total: 1991 |

The list looks rather good. Enough warm bodies to keep the enemy at bay. Maybe you should try and add some more auto cannons / heavy bolters. I think that you lack some longer range anti personal weapons. |

I sent the list off to my IG buddy, and here was his response. His responses are italicized. What do you all think? Agree? HQ: Company Command Squad All righty, here’s my spiel. I know everyone’s got different play styles, and I don’t actually WANT you to play just like me, so I’ll keep my advice as broad as possible, but there are some theme I’ve noticed that I’d like to pass along. First is the whole “I want this unit to be flexible for whatever gets thrown at it.” Works for marines because they last long enough to perform multiple roles. Guard (with the exception of platoons, who eat everyone for breakfast by sheer numbers) have to be treated as a magazine full of special bullets. Each unit is, for the most part a throw away one shot wonder. With that in mind I highly recommend choosing a force of specialized units that support each other instead of a bunch of “tactically flexible” units. They’ll still die. Take for example, this command squad. What is their battlefield role? Orders, obviously, but in my opinion that is but one of their 2 major strengths. They also have the infinitely valuable BS4. Looks like you’ve got them kitted out for combat and close range flame work, but I guarantee you’ll get more up close damage to the Trygons, deep striking marines/Dreadnoughts, rushing bikes, and other nasties at the back of your lines with 3 or four meltas or plasmas, and maybe a plasma pistol on your leader. Don’t forget that when the vehicles and monstrous creatures start raining down you can order yourself to reroll those BS4 S7-8 AP1-2 shots, so your 2 plasma shots each at 12” get to reroll their overheats, and then get a 4+ Carapace and THEN the medics Feel No Pain roll. All that said, there’s something cool about a combat HQ, so if that’s where you’re headed make sure you’re using them as the “2” of a 1-2 punch so they don’t get eaten by higher initiative beasties before they can fight. Conscripts are a great cheap “1”. See my comment on mutual support earlier. Company Commander armed with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon 4 Veterans armed with: Medi-pac,<-nice Regimental Standard, Vox Caster,<- not worth the points IMHO, but if you use them well enough they can be huge, so I could be convinced otherwise Heavy Flamer (to keep enemies at bay) Master of Ordinance (he's like a Basilisk!) (a highly inaccurate one that keeps your whole HQ from being able to move…) Officer of the Fleet always ☺ 1 Bodyguard There are probably better places for these points, but if he’s part of your army’s story it’s totally worth it. All are wearing Carapace Armor (because they're pussies and don't want to die) I use a Chimera for the same reason, but that’s personal preference. You DO get a free heavy flamer on it to replace the HQ one though… Lord Commissar Armed with a Power Weapon and Carapace Armor <This guy will NEVER be good in combat, so don’t expect it. His Ld bonus is his greatest asset. He’s useless if not deployed wisely, so be very careful with that. Also, spending points for him and vox’s seems redundant… Know what order’s you’re going to need (for the most part) before the battle and deploy accordingly. Particularly in this edition having a plan is everything. ELITES: Stormtrooper Squad 10 Troops, with 2 Meltas (These guys are for dropping in and tearing tanks apart.) I actually like these guys, contrary to public opinion. A couple thoughts though: It WILL be a kamikaze drop, so you’re paying for 5 hot shot las guns that you’ll likely never use. Also, don’t forget to use their reroll from the “airborne assault” special rule. I ALWAYS forget it Stormtrooper Squad 5 Troops, with 2 Flamers (These are to cut swathes into enemy troops) Again, have a purpose. The strength of this unit is rapid fire AP3- Marine hunting basically. I’d save the flamers for a platoon command squad or special weapons squad (more on them in Fast Attack) where you can lay down 3-4 templates and you’re not wasting that beautiful BS4 or AP3. Also, I thoroughly enjoy infiltrating this unit (maybe take the extra troops from the 1st squad and put them here), keeping them in reserve, and counterstriking onto my home objective late in the game with that first round of fire. Don’t forget that you can make that pinning too ☺ Moral of the story, expensive, can’t claim objective, but scary as F*%k to your opponent and quite useful if you know EXACTLY what to do with them before the game starts. TROOPS: Platoon 1 Platoon Commander with Bolt Pistol <Fine, but why? On all bolt pistols 4 Guardsmen with 4 Grenade Launchers <Yes Please ☺ Infantry Squad 1 Sergeant with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon< See platoon 2 comments. En Masse they won’t be as bad, but I think the points may be better spent on another 10 bodies into the fray. (<This particular advice: TOTALLY person bias. Ignore at will) These guys will be taking on light infantry or bogging down huge nasties, leave the marine equivalents to your specialized MEQ hunters. Commissar with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon 9 Guardsmen with 1 Flamer Infantry Squad 2 Sergeant with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon Commissar with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon 9 Guardsmen with 1 Flamer Heavy Weapons Squad With 3 Lascannons <Never a bad idea. Remember to watch out for S6+ weapon though, as in this edition you get 3 instakills and the whole unit’s gone. Platoon 2 Platoon Commander with Bolt Pistol & Power Fist <if you have to throw guard into combat, this is the ONLY feasible weapon. Power weapons are a waste, because at I3 you’ll attack last anyway, and S3 ain’t hurtin’ nuthin’. That said, it will be rare that this make up it’s points better than a bunch of flamers in the unit. (Feeling mean? 4 flamers and a combi flamer dropping out of your vendetta. Bwahahahaha!) 4 Guardsmen with Standard, 2 Flamers, 1 Melta & Krak Grenades Again, specialize. Meltas and flamers like different kinds of targets Infantry Squad 1 Sergeant with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon Commissar with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon 9 Guardsmen with 1 Melta Infantry Squad 2 Sergeant with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon Commissar with Bolt Pistol and Power Weapon 9 Guardsmen with 1 Plasma, and Krak Grenades You’ll do better with First rank, Second rank orders and plasma guns tha with power weapons. Remember, if you shoot ANY rapid fire weapons you can’t charge, so you may as well go all out with the shooting. Heavy Weapons Squad With 3 Lascannons < I love lascannons! Veteran Squad Sergeant w/ Bolt Pistol & Power Fist 9 other Men with Shotguns & 2 Flamers Only 2? Why not 3? Also, see above comments on flamers and BS4. Forward Sentry Doctrine FAST ATTACK: I love sentinels. One of the coolest units in the game IMO. That said, not worth the points. THAT said I take tem all the time anyway, because they’re coolness SO outweighs their overpriced ness. My solution: Drop one. Find points elsewhere. Add one Vendetta. Load up said Vendetta with a Special weapons squad from one of your platoons. With 3 flamers this unit is only 50 points. Your infiltrating unit comes in late in the game and is a fast, scoring unit. Not to mention that whether you start it sitting on your home objective or fly in onto another one late it’s 3 lascannons, and if they pop it and try to take the objective you’ve got 3 flame templates coming from inside. Doesn’t always work, but this combo has won me more games lately that any other section of my army. I run 2 Vendetta’s, 1 with a SWC and one with my platoon command. Scout Sentinel with Lascannon Scout Sentinel with Lascannon Scout Sentinel with Lascannon HEAVY SUPPORT: Lehman Russ with Battle Cannon, Heavy Bolter hull weapon, Heavy Bolter sponsons, & Pintle-Mounted Storm Bolter Sponsons are cheap, so if you get a chance to use them they’re legit, but I just don’t like them because they tempt me not to move the thing, which is almost always a great way to mess with your opponent. Armor 14, range 72”, can move and shoot. NOTHING IS SAFE!!! Ordnance Battery: Basilisk with Heavy Bolter hull weapon You know how I feel about these little gems☺ And that's it! Grand total: 1991 |

Sounds good! I'll do so. Once I've got a finished list, I'll post it up again. |
