Greetings. I decided to log my BoB build here rather than in my main project log, just seemed to make sense to separate it since I'll be doing lots of other stuff at the same time no doubt.

I'll be honest up front, I don't expect to do all that well points wise, but if I can get to the end and have a fully painted, finished army then I don't care if I end up with negative points, I'll be chuffed to bits!

A quick caveat, I have the codex and have read it many a time, however since I don't actually play the game I never have the benefit of people actually checking any army list I may create. As such if you do spot any glaring errors in my choices please let me know and I'll sort them out. Cheers.

Here we go then. Woo.

Previous month's leftover: -
This month's amount: 250
Total budget: 250

Chimera (autocannon turret, heavy flamer) : 60pts
Infantry Squad (missile launcher, grenade launcher, commissar) : 105pts
Rough Rider Squad (6 rough riders, flamer, grenade launcher) : 75pts (JOKER)
Total spend: 240pts

Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 10pts

First on the list then the chimera. This will be for the Company Command Squad (who will arrive in month 3, being fashionably late).

Ready for primer and I can start painting. Will follow the same colour scheme for all my vehicles, muted grey with light blue detailing.

Next up and infantry squad. This is a hybrid between cadian legs, Col Gravis' rough rider torsos and arms, and Empress heads. The heads are a little small, but I think they should look ok when massed up in ranks. Quite happy with the missile launcher guy who needed a spot of epaulette sculpting since the Col Gravis arms are quite restricted in their poses.

Commissar is a simple baneblade officer guy. I'm using the same body for the commissar for another squad so I'll have nice coherency. I really want to get hold of the amazing commissar model looking to the right with bolt pistol raised, but that can wait. Trying to compelte this army without spending too much more money!

Finally I'm playing my joker so I can include my rough riders. These are the Col Gravis rough rider legs, tank commander torso and Empress heads. The riders have been basecoated blue and their boots and gloves black, the moas have had a base coat of varying colours. Hopefully this qualifies for my joker, since they're nowhere near complete :)

The moas will be toned down slightly but only just, I want them to add some real vibrancy to the army.

Right then. Probably make a real start this weekend unless tomorrow night is a quiet one. Weather permitting I'll prime the chimera and the squad otherwise I'll get the rough riders sorted.

Cheers,
Si

Is that....oh, what was it.... Project Phoenix? That games club that had some stuff specially made like the female guardsmen torsos?

The moas are indeed from the now defunct Phoenix Club (same place I got hold of Col Gravis' praetorian sculpts, though I believe TrooperPX who cast them is now resident over at bartertown if anyone needs any). Sculpted by Ming iirc. Really nice sculpts, and the casts aren't half bad actually, a lot better than some commercial ventures!

Hoping they'll really add some whacky character to the army, not a big fan of the whole grimdark thing, I joined this hobby when it was fun and somewhat like an oil tanker, I only accept change verrrrry slooowwwly.

I do have some templates for the chimeras as it happens, though it's for the standard tracked version. I'll rummage around for my pdf I created and post it here. It'll get really familiar if you follow my log since I use the same base for everything except artillery.

Just realised I didn't post a pic of an assembled moa...

Really hoping I can do these things justic, but either way should be a laugh!

Prefer the Moa assembled. Just reminds me of Bernie Clifton before now.

Yeah not sure what happened to the Phoenix Club really. There were a few projects on the go, then the domain expired and it sort of dwindled. I understand all outstanding projects were finished off, but just seems a shame. Really glad I got some of these when I had the chance.

Hah Bernie Clifton. Yeah not quite the look I was going for. I've tried to assemble them in such a way it looks like the riders are wrestling with their mounts. I get a tauntaun buzz from them anyway so that scene where Han is dragging his around in the cold kept springing to mind.

It doesn't take a lot to get me excited about giant birds with riders, and this certainly does the trick! What colour scheme are you going for for your tanks?

Tanks are going to be muted gray with light blue detailing. I was tempted by the whole Praetorian big red tank look, but I thought en masse it might look a bit daft. Hopefully the red jackets will stand out, and the blues should bring everything together.

Least that's the plan.

Great idea for the rough riders, will be good to see them in such bright colours.

This should be a really good looking force when its completed. Really looking forward to just that.

I take it your rough riders are getting a blue uniform rather than red? What are you planning on for the tankers? Blue uniforms or something else?

Dave out.

Yeah I've spent a lot of time thinking about the uniforms. I did some research into the Zulu war era uniforms, rummaged around the web, then decided to make most of it up anyway :)

Infantry will be standard blue trousers/red tunics, just because that's what first inspired me to choose Praetorians.
Heavy weapons guys, after a lot of back and forthing, will wear the same as infantry. Mainly because you have heavy weapon crews in infantry squads and I didn't want it to look weird.
Cavalry will be wearing blue tunics/trousers and silver detailing.
Veterans will be wearing cream trousers and red tunics (those with carpace armour will have silver armour).
Not a scooby about storm troopers but they're not in my BoB build anyway so we'll ignore them.
The only vehicles with exposed crew will be the sentinel, and they'll be wearing the same as the cavalry (mechanised cav).

I'm hoping there'll be enough cohesiveness across the force to make them look like an army, whilst keeping the different types individual enough. We'll see I guess!

Whoa, nice rough riders!! I saw those over at Phoenix's website before it died, but I was broke at the time. Iwish I'd been able to get some, they look nice.

Interesting, you don't really see this type of Imperial Guard anymore. Shame really, they are nice, characterful models.

Love those bird models, very funny :P

Thanks guys. I'm really glad I took the chance to get the moas when I did, great models.

I've done some painting then, which is probably a good thing given the nature of this project!

Everything is now primed for this month, and I've done some work on the chimera and rough riders.

First the chimera. This was primed grey (I prime everything grey, easier starting point I find), then so far it's had a wash of badab black straight onto the primer. I've tried to give it a streaky appearance, which has worked better in some places than others. However it'll be tidied up, then I'll drybrush a couple of dust colours on, then hit it with a spot of tamiya weather powder and I hope it'll look ok. The flat aluminium on the armour plates needs another coat, watered it a bit much and it looks odd. The blue on the trim will be lightened with enchanted blue I think.

Any suggestions on the tyres? The army is desert based so I can go muddy. So far I'm thinking matte black then a bit of dust, but I'm open to offers.

Next up the rough riders. I've got one of the models almost finished as a tester. As always when you take pics you see horrid things you need to go back and fix (like the purple on the moas neck where I've been too heavy with the drybrushing, and the messy knee pads on the rider), but it's fairly indicative of both my plans and my skills or lack there of.

Posted Image Posted Image

I've have a concern about the colours, in that I think there may be too many and they don't contrast enough. On the mount I've intentionally kept the saddle and adornments to a limited palette of browns, with just the washed aluminium armour around the neck (this aluminium is to be used throughout the army). The rider has a fairly limite number of colours, I tried to link the white to the blue of the uniform with a blue wash, only I didn't have a wash just an old ink and it was far heavier than expected. I'm tempted to give the whole thing a thing white wash to try and get it away from the strong blue. Shoulder pads should match the armour of the bird.

I get the feeling it might just be this bird, the blue and the purple being too close to really spark. When I put the blue guy on the bright orange bird it will probably pop quite nicely. And of course as a unit the uniform look of the riders should accentuate the birds. But this is just so much b*llocks and I'm not sure really.

Thoughts on what I should change? I think the model should give you some idea of my capabilities with the brush, so as much as nice wetblending on the uniform may help or whatever, doubt I'd be able to get there :)

Also fairly indicative of my work rate. It's taken most of the day to get this rough rider from base colours to here. I don't paint quickly, which is why this BoB thing will be such a challenge I reckon!

Cheers for looking and for any feedback.

I like the roughrider. Ok, so you have picked out a few faults yourself, such as the neck area.
I do think that the bird could do with a wash after the drybrush for some better shading, but it's difficult to tell on a picture.
