Hi all, I thought I'd start a separate plog for my BoB progress, objectives and so on, though I'll copy my 'completed' pics into the 4-way FoW plog enforced by Feengit here. I've figured out (with Feengit's help) a predicted list, though this may change as I start getting some games played - I'm very much a Flames of War virgin, unfortunately. Hoping to paint this lot up as 2 Panzer Div. in Normandy, so any thoughts about unit markings, camo, uniforms etc'll be much appreciated: I'll dig into a few sources before I begin painting in earnest anyway. JAN/FEB Previous month's leftover:0 This month's amount:250 Total budget:250 WILDCARD ENTRY GP Panzergrenadier Platoon inc halftracks, minus Command Section: 225pts (thanks to Silent Gallows for figuring out the values here!) Total spend: 225pts Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 25pts MARCH Previous month's leftover:25 This month's amount:250 Total budget:275 Panzerwerfer Battery (1 section + extra crew): 195 GP Panzergrenadier Platoon Command inc halftrack, w/ panzerfaust: 60 Total spend: 255pts Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 20pts APRIL Previous month's leftover:20 This month's amount:250 Total budget:270 GP Headquarters w/ 2 x panzerfaust: 95 GP Mortar Platoon (1 Section, 2 Sd Kfz 251/2): 110 Total spend: 205pts Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 65pts MAY Previous month's leftover:65 This month's amount:250 Total budget:315 GP Panzergrenadier Platoon inc halftracks, minus Command Section: 225pts Total spend: 225pts Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 90pts JUNE Previous month's leftover:90 This month's amount:250 Total budget:340 Heavy Tank Platoon (1), Tiger 1E: 215 Panzerspah Platoon (2 Sd Kfz 234/2 Puma): 100 Total spend: 315pts Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 25pts JULY Previous month's leftover:25 This month's amount:250 Total budget:275 Heavy Tank Platoon (2), Tiger 1E: 215 GP Panzergrenadier Platoon Command inc halftrack, w/ panzerfaust: 60 Total spend: 275pts Left in budget: 0pts Oh, just as a taster, here's the scheme I'll probably use on my vehicles, though this Panther's not in my list. ![]() Any thoughts on the list, or suggestions, will be much appreciated, I'm hoping to have a painted update in the next week or so (my wildcard entry), and I'm toying with personalising my bases a little - more on this when I've figured how to do it. Sincerely hope I continue to feel the motivation I do at the minute for this project: this'd be the first army I've actually painted since I worked for GW!... Rise EDIT: moved some stuff around in my budget post, so I can paint stuff I already own before stuff I don't

Well I've never played it either mate but in my humble it looks like a cool list. & gonna look great on the field once you've painted it. Would be good to see you paint an army though rather than just a few models..... And dont worry. As if the badgering from Feengit wasnt enough I'm sure these good fellows will provide some encouragement! |

So if I read the list correctly, you've got a nice balanced list. Not many tankies, but excellent ones at that. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes mate. Which source book are you using? Fortress Europe? Dave out. |

Ah Pumas, my favourite gerry armoured cars! As for tinkering with the force, I was up at catterick games club chatting to a few regulars who recommend playing 600pt games (on HQ and one compulsory platoon then anything you fancy from the same list) so you can mix and match units, see what works best together at a small scale while learning the rules. |

Cheers guys, BV, even if I only manage month one I'll have painted more figures than I have ... since I moved to Nottingham (which is pretty tragic... but the whole point of this lark I 'spose) HMD: I am indeed using fortress europe list, seems to offer the most choice and one of my regular opponents will be using the Brit list from the same book. We're very pleased the list looks ok: it was knocked up a little off the cuff, was a little worried about only having two tanks, but I understand German tanks are pretty good :-) Gonzo, I'm looking forward to learning a new ruleset, we're playing a couple of cheeky skirmish games tomorrow with what we've got built already, but I think trial and error will out, going to end up building far more than I 'need' anyway: fancy adding some P IVs already, and I'm definitely going to add a 3rd GP platoon at some point for historical accuracy. That said, my track record with concentrating on one project is ...not good. We'll see

It can't be half as bad as mine! Don't worry about not having too many tanks, PGrens are quite tough, you can add anti-tank teams/weapons teams to your HQ's which will be more than enough to make a tank think twice about assaulting you! |

Cheers guys, Gonzo- I've gone for panzerfausts pretty much throughout, should do the job! Shorts- I know about as much as you! Should be fun ;-) Dk- does seem like FoW's flavour of the month at the minute, especially amongst my gaming buddies. Will be doing a little more weathering on the vehicles as I get them done, just did the first layer a year ago on this one. Probably won't need to put in the same number of layers etc as I would on a 40k vehicle tho (if I ever painted one)- god bless 15mm scale! Edited by riseofthemagi, 9 Jan 2011, 08:37 PM.

@ Dr Skud, cheers, I'm sure I'll have got the hang of them by the end, there must be ... 15 half-track based vehicles in this force (if my maths is on)! @ Silent Gallows, cheers, its all about sharing ideas through subtle theft... Right, time for my first proper update - I managed to get most of a day's painting in yesterday, despite having to head out to GW to replace a bunch of paints which had dried out since I last used them (says a lot!). The 3 sections of GP grenadiers are about half done I guess, basecoated everything but the flesh and then washed them with Badab black for some contrast. Since the pic was taken I've re-highlighted a couple of areas (with the original basecoat) and done the basecoat on their skin. Beginning to hate painting 15mm infantry already!.. Pic (sorry, snapped quickly without lightbox etc, and a little out of focus. Figures look washed out, and lighter than they are now, even thouh highlighted since this was taken!) ![]() Still got to start (and indeed finish!) the halftracks for these lot, 3 in total, with their crew. Also, decided to add a little detail to my bases (which should help disguise the difference between base level and the plugs the models stand on, with any luck). I took the idea from the LMG squadmembers who've braced their weapons on piles of logs, and when i looked on the FoW site they've done the same with the 'studio' versions, adding a forest-y feel to the bases with treetrunks and leaf litter. Now, I'm planning to 'borrow' Feengit's basing scheme for my jerry's, as he'll be my most regular opponent, but I see no reason not to add some woodland detailing. ![]() I've made a mold of these four since this was taken, and should be casting a couple by the end of the week - just in time to finish my GP platoon (with any luck). Will continue these across the force as a theme. Also started thinking about my March entries (I know, this kind of organisation scares me too ), definitely want to have these bought/built/undercoated before the start of the month to allow myself maximum painting time. The platoon command were already built with their 'track, and in fact one of the jobs I've got round to this week was re-undercoating this units fatigues, so they're back to black for month two. As for the other unit I'll be doing, I had two panzerwerfers (still in blisters) which Vogt bought for me years ago (cheers!) and was just contemplating ordering a third to complete the unit, when Feengit announced he'd found me one in town (cheers buddy!). I'll get round to buying something for this force soon, I promise! Got the first one built (not added the crew yet) yesterday.![]() That's all for now, significant progress by my standards though! Any thoughts on the colour scheme (if you can make it out ) or on anyhting else, much appreciated.Rise |

Nice work there, good start as well. I find with 15mm infantry that its good to just slap on the basecoat colours, wash them, pick out details and be done with it. Then again I do Brits whose uniforms are all the same colour, unlike Jerry, whose infantry tended to wear jackets and trousers of different colours etc. As for the bases, get some ready mixed filler from a supermarket and use that to blend the bases with the figures bases. Then add your basing materials etc on top of that. That is the way most people do it, and it hides the metal bases really well. |

Gav beat me to it, but I was going to suggest the same thing. If you check out all our FoW armies, and every army on the FoW site, you'll see that polyfiller is used on the base to hide the mounting plugs. Your grenadiers are looking good, and I'm excited about the werfers. Dave out. |

Cheers guys, will have to figure out where I left my ready-mixed. Might have been easier to do this before my undercoat, but we live and learn-might just bash some miliput between this platoon as it'd be easier for next time, but there's a fair bit more infantry to come yet. |

When I painted my FOW, before adding any primer I added some wall filler (some kind of plaster). But I didn't add any sand, that looked to rough and big for the mini's. |

Novogord- cheers mate, I'll definitely look at filler for the remaining platoon and vehicle crew etc - got to be much easier to do this before they're primed. I think I'll be basing with GW sand anyway, not sure as to how realistic it looks (i.e. it doesn't look very to scale at all!) but I like the effect when drybrushed, and I'm copying Feengit's Brits basing anyway, so our forces'll look proper organised when we play each other. About time for another fairly small update methinks, here's where the platoon stand at present - their halftracks are still awaiting love, unfortunately. These pics are a little better as I've used the lightbox, but 15mm stuff seems really dificult to photgraph- would probably be a bit better if I had a daylight bulb (or some free time in the hours of daylight, come to think of it )Anyhoo, whole platoon:- ![]() Another View:- ![]() Couple of stands in close-up:- ![]() ![]() These pictures again don't really show the colour on them (ho hum), most of the kit their carrying was highlighted with a mix of Dark Angels green, so is fairly fruity compared to the Fieldgray fatigues, but this contrast doesn't seem to show at all. I'll figure this out eventually. All that's left for these guys is basing (obviously), helmets on some which are black and need a highlight, and similar work on their booties, and I'm sorted (well, excepting halftracks). Any thoughts about the scheme (if you can make it out) are appreciated, pretty sure this is the first time I've painted any historical infantry (excepting some 1:72 Russians I never finished), but I think they're turning out ok anyway... Nice work RotM. I think if you try to turn the exposure on the camera down a notch, and really get close to them you can take ok pics. Also try a brighter light source and aim it from a direction that doesn't cause as much shadow on the minis. I take my pics just on the shelf as its white anyway, and just shine my desk lamp at the models from the front. Looking good though, be good to see these based up etc. |
