Greetings,

Welcome to my Band of Brothers log. This log will focus on the creation of a North Ammoriss Naval PDF force for Aquanautica Imperialis. The points system for BOB works out brilliantly because a North Ammoriss navy cruiser, the backbone of any fleet, costs 250 pts.

This log has one major disadvantage compared to my peers, not only do I need to paint the models, but I have to design and scratchbuild them too! Thankfully, painting will be the easy part!

No, I have to choose what I am going to build/paint. Hmmm, after some thought, I have decided to try for the workhorse of the AN, a Reliable cruiser. These craft have good speed, solid armor, and a heavy broadside. A Reliable will make a solid backbone for the force.

Previous month's leftover: 0
This month's amount: 250
Total budget: 250

Item 1: AN Reliable Cruiser- 250 pts

Total spend: 250 pts

Remaining amount to be carried into next month: 0

Now, to add some pics to this thread.

Here is the basic hull I have laid out for the Reliable.

I'm really not sure where it is going to go from here, or if I am going to go a completely different direction in the design.

Here are some previous failed attempts at designing the PDF ships...

Posted Image

The design above was traditional. I liked the eagles, but the sculpting was just not right for the ship. To rounded and not angular enough.

Then I tried this one...
Posted Image

This one tried to make it look much different than a traditional warship but maintain some of the eagle design elements. I consider it a failure.

Here is a sketch...

Let me know what direction I should go design wise.

The idea of incorporating the BFG iconography is a novel idea but given they are ships that will corrode (assumes ironclads here) I'd go for something less elaborate than the sketch above. I'd go for more the typical American Civil War Ironclads but with a bit of a 40K twist (rivets, reactor cooling vents instead of chimney stacks etc). Low silhouettes over tall gothic design, they are war ships after all (which goes against everything in BFG with their floating cathedrals

I kind of like the look of this one...

I actually used some of this look on my Ork fleet.

It's a tough job integrating the 'imperial' look with 'realistic' vessels, though the civil war vessels are a good influence to have ... the top picture in particular is staggeringly cool, makes me want to make a 40k scale aq. imperialis ship, as a board (maybe docked?) with turrets everywhere and huge smokestacks... Like when I first read 1984 and thought 'floating fortresses? There's a 40k board idea there...'. Appreciate this isn't very helpful as far as developing the fleet designs goes, I think that if you're not going to have an eagle around the prow (which might well make sense from a 'realism' point of view), then having skulls/aquilas/other imperial symbols atop the superstructure is a good way to suggest their heritage, maybe some gothic-y windows at the rear (like elizabethan warships, but gothic, if this makes sense), or you could consider spires akin to those on the old imperator titan (there's a similar piece on the cities of death buildings - one of them). Might help anyway. Looking forward to seeing where you go with this anyway.

I like the idea of fusing some historical concepts with the 40 universe. I imagine that a lot of the imperial stuff should look quite retro - do the imperium invest much effort in building new navies?

I like the Helgoland the most of the 4 above. :)

I think your ships look cool, though I must say I like the card ships more than the putty ones..
The Reliable looks like an awesome model. I really like the prow.

I like the idea of basing the Imperial ships with the WW1 Dreadonaught (is that what they were called?) ships. Makes sense since the Leman Russ tansk do look similar to the MKIV British Tanks in WW1.

I've done some work on templates for the design... I plan on using a similar bow to the card Reliable, but I want to make this ship's deck a bit lower to the waterline.

These templates should be to scale. The great thing about building ships is that they are relatively modular by design.

@Shorts... yeah, the putty ones are a bit of a disaster. :-/

So far this has not been going well.

I ventured out to get some plasticard the other day (a first for me) but did not find what I was looking for. I'm also looking forward at my calendar, and am starting to get seriously concerned about my ability to hit the deadline.

I hate this time of year.

Took a crack at making the base hull with some card, and was completely non-plussed by the effort and the results.

Pics to come soon...

Also, more snow tomorrow, so I might get some time to work on this.

Happy birthday... ka-boom!

I wanted to get my hands on some P-card for this project, but it was not to be and time was running out. Maybe next time.

It's a shame that you couldn't get the plasticard as that would have meant sharper lines in places.

But it does look the business - the design is spot on. It looks futuristic whilst retaining the imagery of the historical references you used.

I'm now trying to find a paint scheme for this.

My first insticnt was the Great White Fleet style of Teddy Roosevelt's Pre-Dread Navy...

Posted Image

White can be... problematic.

Then there is the traditional Battleship grey...

Posted Image

Boring!

So, of course that leads to good old Razzle Dazzle!

Posted Image

But that is too much... even for me....

Here is something a bit more subdued...

So what do you guy's think about painting these AQ Cruiser's?

Admiral Scheer dazzle would be my choice.

So, I have been stuck during a blizzard for the last three days. Normally, that would mean I had plenty of time to paint, except I'm not stuck at my house!

I'm about 150 blizzard covered miles from my painting supplies and models. I'm starting to feel the deadline creeping up on me.

I waited until the last minute, and now I am paying the price. My mother-in-law went into the hospital, so I won't hit the deadline.
