OOC THREAD

This is the OOC (or "Out of Character") thread, where players can do several things. Firstly, you can talk among yourselves, as this is one of the key things that will keep the roleplay going. You can also ask any questions that you might have, and you can coordinate your plans. You can also feel free to have fun here!

This is also the thread that non-players can participate in, if you wish.

CHARACTER CREATION

You have attracted the attention of the Lady Amaranthe, a Witch-Hunter of the Ordo Hereticus. She has singled you out and lifted you from your previous lives, choosing to induct you into her service as a cell of acolytes. You will be agents, investigators and soldiers in the front-line of the Inquisition's shadow-war against those who would harm the Imperium.

This is a struggle so secret that ordinary men must never even learn of its existence. You will encounter terrible individuals, be tempted with power and exposed to corruption. Along with your fellow acolytes, you must use wit, luck and what abilities you possess to survive - and even thrive.

But first, you must look inside yourself...

STEP 1 - ORIGINS AND IDENTITY

Quote:

"You are fortunate. Oh, to be considered for the Lady Amaranthe's service, that's one thing. But you are lucky indeed to have survived the initial testing phases. There are those that don't. They are weeded out quickly - and one never hears from them again.

So tell me, friend. What is your name? What were you before fate led you here?"

+++TASK: Create a new entry within the data-stack here.
Enter your name, age and any salient details.
Tnen create a section entitled "Prior Life."
Include approximately 100 words detailing your life before you were considered for Inquisitorial service.
At this stage of your questioning, brevity is encouraged.
Our Interrogators will press you for further details if required.+++

STEP 2 - EQUIPMENT
Quote:

Couple questions:

1. Should we consult the DH rulebook if we have it and use a similar format?
2. Can we riff in here to bounce ideas off each other before finalizing the Character Sheet for the Folio?
3. Should we wait for your final approval before posting anything to the Folio?

Using the Dark Heresy book is not required. As I said before, it is worth considering that too much detail at this stage could tie us up in knots. The focus is on the investigation, after all, and I don't want people to spend time on thousand-word biographies that don't really serve any purpose. Hence why I said that brevity was encouraged!

You can absolutely use the OOC thread for any purpose you wish. It serves the purpose of binding players together and not clogging up the other two threads with extraneous information. I would actually encourage people to post in here as much as they like.

You don't need my "permission" or "approval" to post in the thread, though it is worth noting that I'm after 3-6 players for the game, and we have 8+ expressing interest, that it's not guaranteed that you'll be able to participate (though if that's the case I'll try to include you at a later date.)

If there are any issues as to what you've written, I will encourage you to alter them. There will be further stages to character creation. What I would say is that each player should post only once for their character profile; during the investigation you can use the thread to make notes.
I don't know if this'll get past the Ammobunker's tendency to merge subsequent posts, but Dave, yes - that is along the lines of what I was looking for. I may have to discuss some issues with you, but I think that's brilliant, and the sort of thing I'd like to see other players putting up. :)

Thanks Commissar.

Something for everyone else to consider, I'm thinking about making my character mute. He is a scribe, and therefore would only be able to communicate through writing/gestures.

The idea is pretty simple. He worked as a scribe inthe employ of some minor agency that his family was part of as a hereditary caste adept. During is relatively routine and boring life, he was exposed to "forbidden knowledge" completely by accident and at random. The scribe was given a simple choice, join or die. He chose to become an alclyte, but was made a mute in order to keep secret what he saw.

Thoughts?

No problem mate, feel free to do it in public or by PM.

If you wondered, the Lailth Expedition is the back story for my Blood Angels and assorted Guard forces that were too cool to keep solely in my mind but that may not make it to the full force stage. Should you wish, I can send you a synopsis if its necessary for this. Its a rather juicy story ;)

Easy E: I don't have a problem with the character as you've suggested it; the idea of an ordinary man accidentally coming into contact with the darker side of the 40k universe and being thrust into the shadow war strikes me as rather evocative. With regards to the issue of him being mute, it really comes down to how you feel it will work as part of the group. If you feel you can play him well, and will enjoy doing so, that's up to you. Obviously as a mute character, you may find yourself somewhat in the back during conversations, interrogations, and possibly even decision-making.

HMD: I actually googled the "Lailth Expansion" in case you'd used a small bit of GW fluff, and it led me to your Blood Angels blog. I don't have a problem with it, though it's worth mentioning that this will take place in the dying days of 810.M41, which from what I remembered was ~600 years after the Pride of Baal was destroyed. With that said, there are those in the Imperium with long memories (particularly the Adeptus Astartes!) If you need to discuss things further, feel free.

With regards to your characters, I'll just say that you're not important. Which is to say that in the main, the Inquisition will not have expended too much effort in transporting you across the galaxy.

This game is going to be taking place in Hive Praxis, on the world of Hyades. Hyades is located in the Dalthus Sector. At least some of you likely come from Hyades, if not the Praxis Hive itself. I'm fine with HMD's character coming from Alander, but I would suggest that CVD's character be from closer to home than a (famous) planet like Ichar IV.

Easy E: Maybe you should have a servo skull (which are bloody expensive) which will act as your hmm think-writer, or a servo arm whit a big board or something to write what you want to say? Once I was mastering a player with a mute character, it was ok, but she had a chimera which was working as device of this kind so people could talk with her.

Comissar: please define me what is to much of details for you, cause I have tendency to building big stories, as I was always mastering and mostly play storytelling so character profile and history was like a character sheet. More details was better.

Just got really confused at that mate, forgot I'd actually set a date for the loss of the Pride in my backstory and thought you'd pulled the name/date from elsewhere. Or have you?

You're right that the Astartes have long memories, and when you consider the nature of the information that led to Aridius' downfall it is hardly surprising that people are interested six centuries later. Hell, it'll probably interest a great many parties for millennia after the fact!

Regarding the world of Alander, t'is nothing more than a randomly made up name I spawned while typing. If it suits you, stick it in the same sub-sector or even system as Hyades. Of course, I'm assuming you're working from a Mol-generated setting rather than something out of a sourcebook.

CVD: Either/or, really. It won't really make too much difference if you're from Hive Praxis. After all, saying someone is from "Hive Praxis" is like saying someone is from "Western Europe" - you know your area really well, but if you're elsewhere, you can only go off what you already know. It just serves to make things a little simpler. So if you want to keep things simple, just say that you're a hive rat from the Praxian underhive, known for having an affinity towards technology. Apprehended by the arbitrators, you have been uprooted. And ta-dah! Inquisitorial service awaits. :)

Valdez: The idea of the servo-skull isn't a bad one, and if Easy's character is mute, it might off-set some of the disadvantages. It's very grimdark!

As to the question of details, it's simply that I don't want people to get too engrossed in reams of backstory that will have little impact on the actual mechanics of the game. Characters can grow organically, and I'm quite happy for people to have a backstory in their mind, but at the moment, the backstory isn't the most important section.

HMD: In this post you give the date of 263.M41 for the destruction of the Pride of Baal.

With regards to the Dalthus sector, it is a "Mol-generated setting." It comes from when I created the Castigators. Their homeworld, Losanco, was set within a rough and tempestuous area known as the Howling Stars. When I started with INQ28, I created the Dalthus Sector, which contained Nova Castille, the frontier-world of Cordova, and many others - including Hyades, capital world of the Hyades Sub, and a powerful world in its own right. Inquisitor Amaranthe originates from my work to flesh out the Dalthan Conclave, but this Dark Heresy-esque game allows us to take a look at things from the bottom up, and fill in some of the gaps.

At the moment, the wider setting matters very little, because a Hive is like a self-contained world of its own. So I'm not too fussed about Alander - I was just stating that the majority of the acolytes would be from Hyades. I imagine that Pulse's Guardsman would be an off-worlder, and possibly Priests or Arbitrators would be, too - but there's no reason for a Hive Scummer to be from anywhere else!

Plus, if we can get through this, there's always the chance that we can go off-world! :)

If you check the first post of the folio thread, I've put up some information about Hyades in response to those of you asking about it. I hope that it helps somewhat.

I will just re-iterate that we're looking for about six characters maximum!

At the moment, we appear to have:
  • CVD: Hive Ganger/Scum
  • Easy E: Scrivener/Scribe
  • HMD: Hive Noble/Information Broker
  • El Diablo: Imperial Priest
  • Pulse: Imperial Guardsman
  • Marovian: Arbitrator
  • Valdez: Tech-Priest
  • Gundrone: Adept

That's 8 (assuming I've not forgotten anybody) - so I want to be very careful about the characters and the makeup of the team! So please, don't be disappointed if you don't make the cut!

It makes me feel bad, but I want to be clear about it. If the cell gets too large, it will become unwieldy and it will make the game harder to play. Plus, the more of you there are, the worse I have to make the bad guys! ;)

Excellent to see character sheets from Marovian and El D. (Is 68 perhaps a bit old for your Preacher, though?)

I would encourage everybody to put up pictures for your characters, if you can, just so people are able to visualise them.

Stage 2 of character creation has been posted! See post #2 in this thread for the required action.

Gun Drone: I love the idea of a teacher being thrust into the limelight (as I'm training to be a teacher myself!) but, I don't think I'll be able to accept your character. This group is on the edges of being far too large for me. As a result I'll have to ask you to sit out. But should the group require reinforcements, I will certainly come to you!

Ok chosen Lasgun, more from a realistic stand point that most guard regiments use Lasguns. Although i would have preferred a Hellgun/Hotshot lasgun. :D

Okay, for those of you circling these threads and crippled with insomnia, I've also put section 3 up - further equipment. If you had items you wanted but that weren't in your initial gear, you can look for them there. If there's anything additional you would be interested in, please feel free to discuss it here. If you need to know what a particular item is, I will happily discuss it.

Some of you will notice you've got equipment in your starting gear that you couldn't possibly afford in the "further equipment" - good for you!

If paying cash for extra equipment doesn't fit with your character, consider it to be your "influence", or the costs incurred in bringing these items with you to Hyades. Perhaps you had to bribe someone to sweeten the deal...

Anything you do not spend you can save - unspent thrones can be added to your character sheet.
