Hi all. Aiming to 2000 point list but still lacking some, around 300 points short. Been thinking of adding two Hydras (should order those from FW) and Salamander Command (of my own making/conversion). Oh, by the way, only Chimera-hull based vehicles allowed in this list, but then again, I have contemplated adding a five man Rough Rider squad (on SM scout bikes). And commissars are there for fluffy reasons, but maybe they can be ejected to save points for better use, if something is suggested.

Tips, comments, ideas etc more than welcome, it's been quite a while since I played the game.

So question is mainly, do I have enough troops? Thinking of grabbing objectives and such. Veteran squads and Devil dog would be the ones doing the charging part where as the infantry platoon and Company command would be forming the firing line with the additional "firepower" from Chimeras (heavy bolters and hunter-killer missiles). Manticores wouild be doing the obvious long-distance pounding of opposition.

Should I add Salamander Scout (Fast Attack choice) rather than Salamander command?

Hydras would offer anti-air and nice "crowd-control" firepower as well.

Also another Devil Dog would not harm either, right?

Cheers,

Troop list looks good - much as I would have it. I just worry a little long range anti tank is missing, though to be fair, manticores are awsome in that role.

Devildog or hellhound - both useful. Me, I'd chuck in an engineers Demolisher as support - awsome tank.

Thanks for reply and comments Digits.

Still one question regarding the troops and especially the veterans. Should the normal vets be all armed with shotguns? And while we are at it, the commissars, do they need beefing up with any force weapons or power fists etc?

Then about Demolisher... I should make a count-as-conversion with Chimera-chassis so it would fit in, so to speak. Anything else to replace it or to take instead of it?

Sorry for the double post, just wanting to give you guys a breather between the texts. Still hoping for the comments, ideas, tips and critique from you lot.

This time the fluff part deals with some Calvarian military customs and/or traditions. Of course, quite heavy influence is drawn from good old Romans :)

* * *

CALVARIAN MILITARY CUSTOMS:

On Calvarian first names:

Calvarian soldiers have the right to use classic Imperial first name if…
1) they have an active service record of 25 Terran years in their regiment.
2) they receive a promotion to the rank of Captain.
3) they receive a Distinguished Service Medal or equivalent and they are recommended by both regimental commanding officer and regimental commissar.
4) they belong to one of the noble houses of Calvarian prime, either by birth or adoption.

About Calvarian military service:

All Calvarian males are required to enlist at the age of 15 but only some 10% of each age group continues to active service immediately thus becoming conscripts (hastatus) and starting their training period of five years, known as tirocinium. The rest 90% are required to partake in planetary defense service (auxilia) for next 30 years.

At the end of tirocinium, the conscripts will go through a festival known as armilustrium, festival of ritual cleansing of armament. This festival marks the end of their conscript status, transforming them to fully recognized soldiers (princeps). The veteran status and right to use honorary title of triarius is conferred to princeps that have served either for 15 Terran years or celebrated five campaign triumphs. Many NCOs and some elderly triarii are known by their fellow soldiers by the nickname of senex (lit. old man).

All the above concerns the Calvarian Prime Sector but enlistment from Calvarian subsectors is a different matter. Whereas Calvarian Prime has couple of populous hive worlds supported by few agri-worlds, the subsectors are mainly mining and agricultural worlds. The mining worlds are mainly run by Calvarian noble houses or Calvarian judicial administration and agri-worlds operate on basis of huge latifundium (farms) that have several thousands of workers each. From these world Calvarian military has the right to handpick fresh recruits as conscripts. Many of these possible recruits pass through the hands of lanista, who deal and supply workforce to Calvarian subsectors. Many lanista run specialized fighting schools, ludus, in addition to their own mines or farms, if not dealing wholeheartedly with contraband material with infamous rogue traders.

On Calvarian unit names:

Calvarian units of battalion level or higher, not withstanding some special cases, are usually given special unit nicknames or titles, awarded after successive campaigns. Same titles can be awarded to several units, thus the unit numbering helps to distinguish between different units. This somewhat unclear, yet very traditional and honorable custom causes problems and grey hair to scribes and historians interested in or working with Calvarian military.

One special note regarding this naming system is that only units originating from Calvarian prime sector use Imperial Classic in their names, units from subsectors can use only normal Imperial. Thus, for example, one can easily deduce that the “Black Arrow” (the 4th Detached Air Assault Battalion, 27th Calvarian Regiment) hails from Calvarian subsectors.

Doing a count as is fine but may be hard to pull off, in part as the way to tool up a demolisher IS to use the sponsons - that's a lot of firepower to attach to a chimera chasis.

As for vets - I say yes, though I'm probably in a minority. Take shotguns - you can then assalt with them. Assault with them????!!!! Hell yes - sometimes it's necessary to chuck these guys in. The best defence is offence. Why wait to be assaulted and give them extra attacks? Besides which, shotguns are cool looking!

So with building a force that is somewhat Soviet Afganistan era themed I needed to make an army list, to keep me on right track and also motivate the build.

So here's 1500pts worth of Calvarian 27th Regiment's 1st SAD (Special Assault Detachment) during their Afgatachan campaign. Like the unit name already shows, the plan is quite simply. Shout 'Uraa!" and charge the enemy.

HQ

Company Command Squad

Commander with power fist and plasma pistol
Veteran with Vox-caster
Veteran with Medi-pack
Veteran with Plasma gun
Veteran with Heavy Flamer
Nork Deddog

= 255

ELITES

Storm Trooper Squad

Sergeant with Plasma pistol
Trooper with Plasmagun
Trooper with Meltagun
Two additional troopers

= 152

TROOPS

2 x Penal Legion Squad

= 160

2 x Veteran Squad

Veteran Sergeant with bolt pistol
Veteran with Vox-caster
Veteran with Flamer
Veteran with Meltagun
Veteran with Plasmagun
All rest have shotguns
Demolitions doctrine

= 274

Veteran Squad

Gunnery Sergeant Harker
Veteran with Vox-caster
Veteran with Flamer
Veteran with Meltagun
Veteran with Plasmagun
All rest have shotguns
Demolitions doctrine

= 190

FAST ATTACK

Valkyrie Assault Carrier Squadron

Valkyrie with las-cannon, rocket-pods and heavy bolters
Valkyrie with las-cannon, missiles and heavy bolters

= 320

Vendetta Gunship with heavy bolters

= 140

==> 1491 pts

Shotguns can be useful if they're riding in Chimeras or Valkyries, though I feel you may be trying to make everyone do a bit of everything with the veterans weapons loadouts. Personally I would concentrate the weapons into each squad (i.e. flamers in one squad, meltas in another) but this is entirely from a gaming efficiency veiw rather than fluff based, and is only how I run my Guard. What works for you may be different to what works for me.
