unless plans change significantly, this is the fantasy army that will be coming to uni with me

Lord:
Prince on Gryphon with Armour of Caledor, Vambraces of Defence, Lance and Shield. 439

Heroes:
Level 2 Mage with Ring of Fury 165
Level 2 Mage with 2 Scrolls 165
Noble Battle Standard Bearer with Enchanted Shield, Dawnstone and Dragon Armour 140

Core:
25 Sea Guard with command and shields 350
15 Sea Guard with command and shields 220
15 Sea Guard with command and shields 220

Special:
15 Phoenix Guard with command 255
5 Ellyrian Reavers with Harbringer, Bows and Spears 112
25 Swordmasters with command and Lion Banner 430
18 White Lions with command 300

Rare:
Repeater Bolt Thrower 100
Repeater Bolt Thrower 100

Total 2996

I still need 8 white lions and 15 sea guard/archers/spearmen to make it work, but the rest of it I have. Unless people think its better to run with 10 Swordmasters and 8 white lions rather than 18 white lions?

Go post in someone's topic that you normally wouldn't
Based on everything I've seen on 8th edition bigger is best because those Swordmasters and White Lions are easily ate through if they are in small blocks.

so maybe bump the Swordmasters up to 35 and just have the 8 white lions as a distraction coming through woods etc. would save me buying a WL box set anyway as the 10 extra swormasters im just waiting to get bases for :)

Indeed, what Keravin said. I had the same experience, a few small units wear eaten by some large blocks and not even elite infantry. Go for 35 swordmasters and leave the lions as defenders of your artillery.

According to GW's Astronomicon Blog, Swordmasters work best in blocks of 24 arranged as 6x4.
Thats 13 attacks and full rank bonus Vs 5xX mobs, reforming to 12x2 if your facing down a Horde.

speaking of hordes, the Sea Guard would work best as 2 blocks of 30 10x3 as they can fire in 3 ranks,
and you can always reform to 5x6 or 6x5 against non horde units.

White Lions can afford to be smaller units. If you make the changes above, the rest of your points can go into
making a this unit slightly bigger?

I'm afraid the sea guard have to stay as is, because thats the only way i can manage to get to 3k within point restrictions as my main point sinks are my characters and my specials, which worked fine under 7th but are really pushed now under 8th.

As for swordmasters, that 24 man unit isnt taking into account missile casualties, which, with only heavy armour, I'm going to get. I'll start them 7x5 then change if necessary
