Thought this was special enough to warrant its own log, so here it is. About two months ago i was bored once and found myself thinking what i wanted to get dad for his birthday.

He's always been into scale models, but has never got round to finishing models in the last 20 years or so. So i decided a fully built and painted model of an f-16 (which is his favourite jet) would be an awesome present for him.

I ordered the kit from hong kong 3 days before the ash clouds of doom spread over northern europe, and it arrived today. First off im absolutely blown away by the detail in the kit, so i decided not to bother with any resin/brass etch parts except a replacement engine, because the one that comes with the kit is quite frankly crap.

This is the most modern variant of the f-16 that is in widespread use, i was originally intending to model a block 42 airframe but that was too expensive (in the order of this kit plus another kit plus 50 quid of resin accessories), so i'll save that one for another day. It has all sorts of fun things like a different cockpit, a different engine, fuselage stiffeners etc because the airframes are older etc...

so i set to building the kit with a sudden burst of excitement that i havent felt in a very long time, and ill let the pictures tell the story:

Landing gear bay:

Which sits ontop of the air tube (that ive painted the wrong colour :( )

Ejector seat:

The forward section of the air intake (also needs repainting white):

Landing gear bay In Situ:

This shot i love, shows the passage the airflow takes from intake (right) to engine mouth (at left of shot), tis quite fascinating how the duct changes shape.

More paint:

Beautifully enough (when it comes to hiding the kit from dad until his birthday in august) the kit comes with removable tail and tailplanes, making the kit much easier to hide from dad/store.

Detail of the nose gear bay and the airduct relative to the fuselage:

Im absolutely loving putting this kit together, it is actually flawless. I cant wait to give it to dad either... im about to go repaint the air intake tube with my airbrush, shame its all glued together. I think the deeper section of tube (which is barely visible from the outside) will just be attacked with a brush.

Tamiya kits go together fantastically...just watch out for the decals, tho you may get lucky and get ones that are actually usable.

Oooh, F16 :)

I say that not knowing anything about planes, other than this one is supposed to be reasonably fast and shoots stuff.

the detail on the kit looks lovely. I've never really been into model kits but i was having a look at a few in Toymaster the other day when looking for plastic army men, and some of them look superb

edit: how many tale of... points might this count as? from the detail it looks to be a reasonable number. you'd better ask Digits :)

Tinners: worst comes to the worst i'll just buy an aftermarket sheet for it, wouldnt hurt too much.

Doghouse: cheers mate

Brambs: The F-16 was the first jet that could accelerate flying vertically due to it having a thrust to weight ratio >1, it is multirole so it can drop bombs, fire missiles and make lots of holes in things with its vulcan cannon when the first two fail.

Not built a scale kit for many a year. Built a lot in my younger years before I got into 40k.

Looking forward to seeing this come together. Do you have an intended squadron for it yet?

More please. Really good to see some different as mentioned above. What is the plan for the paint job? Air defense grey or some kind of display paint job? Saw a photo on here the other day of an F-16 in tiger strips (cant remember where) which would look good but may not be what your dad is expecting.

ah, ok. still prefer the F22 though, mainly due to Starscream being an F22

I've put together my fair share of model aircraft when I was a kid, and I'm really looking forward to seeing you tackle this one Dave. Yer dads lucky, too, that's a pretty damn cool gift, at least if you ask me. :)

Best colour scheme*:

*isn't actually an f16, its a mitsubishi f2, 20% larger than the f16 and made from carbon fibre and other composite materials.

do you know where i can get the decals for that scheme? cos i want to paint it in that scheme now...

HMDave - when i do my own one (which given how much im loving this one i will be doing) im gonna build a block 42, leaving me with a spare full kit to do a block 30 or a block 25 jet with, that could very easily be blue-angelised.

Why would you paint it like a Blue Angel ? They fly F-18s

Thunderbirds is the team that flies F-16s. And what a boring display team they are in real life.

i have a thing for the blue angels, i saw them when i was 7... and i do remember them flying hornets not vipers. nevermind :p

Decided this one will be 52nd Fighter Wing Commander's air craft, part of USAFE (USAF in Europe) based in germany, 2005, mainly because they are my favourite out of the decals that came with the kit, which seem pretty decent.

Well put, mate. Nearly corrected you on that one, small footnotes are indecent. 20% larger is quite a stretch, though- it's what, a foot longer? Five or six foot greater wingspan, I'll grant you, but it's even a bit shorter than the real thing, if I recall.

...God I love useless airplane knowledge.

Very interesting, looks like a wonderfully detailed kit and I think its a really cool idea for a present, best of luck completing it and painting it, knowing your standard this will be a log worth following.

Well the wing area is 20% larger, fuselage maybe not 20% but still. Bigger tail tho, not sure if its taller or just longer. Nose is wider and the air duct is also bigger. So...

Oh and Dave, if I see a single paint chip anywhere on this. I'll fly over there and punch you.

completely missed the f-2 footnote :(

just wikipedia'd it, wikipedia was very informative, it even revealed this:

Work continued on the viper after dad went to bed, had a couple of close calls but all is good :)

Pilot is assembled:

I'll need some guitar wire to do his breathpipe now, given the head isnt looking straight ahead.

Upper fuselage glued together:

Complex or what???

The classic profile takes shape:

The novel way of attaching the tail - interferance fit with rubber washers on metal bars!
Posted Image

Alternative cockpits - gold tinted and normal. Tinners - do you know any decent way of getting rid of the mouldline down the centre of the canopy and polishing it to a clear finish?
Posted Image

Low detailed afterburner fail:

The one ive ordered:

edit: tinners - this one is being done by the books, no monkeying around. completely clean. except the flame can, which will be weathered according to a rather large collection of reference photos i have :P
