Ok I have come with the idea of creating a reference section for everything we modellers need from paints to brushes, from sculpting tools to pliers etc etc.

So My first request is going to be paint brush based, can everyone whos use none GW paint brushes please tell what company use, what sizes you use and which of the GW brushes they would retail too (a link to where you buy them would be great, stating which country they are in too would help).

So people what do you use and where do you get them.

Games workshop Brushes:

Basecoat Brush
Standard Brush
Detail Brush
Fine Detail Brush
Flat Dry Brush small
Flat Drt Brush large

(There are others so please added more if you use others)

I use Winsor and Newton Cottman brushes, everything from 0000 up to about size 3. Since I've been using them for nearly 20 years, I use the more worn, larger ones for base coating and the smaller, finer ones for detail.

I am moving to Windsor and Newton too (will get series later). I buy them at a craft store called "Michaels" which is a chain here in the US

Basecoating: Manufacturer unknown. 3/8" flat brush (also used for drybrushing tanks)
Standard Brush: W&N size 0 "Liner" brush
Detail Brush: standard W&N size 00 (one for metal and one for colors)
Fine Detail Brush: Unkown, Size 10/0
Flat Dry Brush small not used currently or I use a round 0 or 00
Flat Drt Brush large See above

Ok lets make this simpler can people that use W&N Series 7 state what sizes they use so far I have:

W&N series 7:

Basecoat: Nothing yet.
Standard Brush : W&N size 0
Detailed Brush: W&N size 00
Fine Detailed brush: Nothing yet
Flat small drybrush : Nothing yet
Flat large dry brush ; nothing yet

If people could fill in the missing with W&N series 7 only that would be great.

W&N Cottman brushes:

Basecoat: size 2 to 3
Standard : size 0 to 1
Detail: size 000 to 00
Fine detailed : size 0000

Again some missing please fill in the gaps if you know also Marovian if you could clarify what I have said as right or adjust it si it is right please do

ProArte Proirngi plus 007:

Fine detail; 3/0

Charlie_c67 or anyone else whos uses these could fill in th egaps it would be great.

Ok anyone else got other manufacturers ? please group them in manufurers to make my Job easier.

My dyslexia kicked in with full force there. It should be PROLENEI not whatever I'd written!

The others I use are all Citadel/GW of various ages. Large and small drybrush, Starter brush, Large brush, and fine detail brush.

Wolvie, I wouldn't use any Series 7 Brush for basecoating. They start out priced at around a tenner.

I know. But under there you have 'nothing yet'. I'm just saying delete that category as far as Series 7 brushes go. They aren't for donkey work and that way folks know. :)

Thinner for Acrylic Paints? I use Revell Color Mix and I find it lacking.

Ermm, I use W&Ns Series 7 for basecoating and everything really, apart from pigments and sculpting/basing, it's just a matter of how neatly (or not) you apply basecoats, and how well you take care of your paintbrushes.

I use a size 0 for the vast majority of my work, but for some really fine detailing I'll use my 000, just for finelining and filligree though. I find it a reliable workhorse brush, and taken care of, it lasts ages, but I paint tons, so I wear them out a bit for my purposes quite quickly as W&N series 7s go, even with regular washing and conditioning.

I hear Raphael brushes are of a similar quality, but slightly more rigid, suiting a more, hmm, vivacious painting style better, as the bristles don't tire so quickly.

I've also heard good things about Rosemary & Co from a lot of deamon winners etc.

The Masters brush soap and conditioner is good stuff.
