I had an interview but they said my painting wasn't up to it. I think they were being bitches. This was about 5 years ago and though I wasn't what I am now, I was alright.

Like a lot of us i've done my time.

Did 2 years in Slough when they still had a store there, went through the red, black and blue shirts then they sacked me for being 'too aggressive'.

Utter bullshit.

Those of you that know me know that despite my size im not aggressive in the slightest.

I'm not keen on the company's new employment methods, every new staffer I've met has been pretty [Not on the floor please] at painting, apparently they only have to be willing to learn the rules too, and not actually know them in advance - bit of a turn about from what it used to be.

I did a few months in the summer of 2007. I was a key-timer, so my hours were quite random. I also managed to get bronchitis during that time, and it severely hampered my ability to do my job for weeks. It probably wouldn't have been so frustrating if I was healthy, or if I had a better manager.

The job stressed me out something fierce. Doing the same demo games over and over, finding that most of the regular clientele were people I would never want to spend my free time with and having to rush just about every aspect of the job (painting, talking to customers, hobby help) and thus not enabling me to feel proud of my work, were all factors which made me resent the whole thing.

You get accused of being on commission, a lot. You hear regulars snicker behind your back when you're giving 'the pitch' to the potential customer - lots regulars don't have much respect for staffers either. And what might have been the straw which broke the camel's back for me was making my hobby into my job. After I was done with the job, it had broken me, and I didn't have any motivation to even work on my own stuff for over 2 years after.

Don't get me wrong, there are people who can thrive in a situation like that, but it's not for everyone, and it certainly wasn't suited for me. If you can make your hobby into your job and still find yourself enjoying your personal hobby on your own time, more power to you.

To be fair, at the time I wasn't as good as some of the other staff. I was gutted at the time. But I've only really started trying hard at painting over the past five years or so. Those long in the tooth like SC might remember when I first used to put stuff up over on Warseer, but it was the AB that pushed me into bigger and better methods really.

As to what Lukas said, I think it's really sad the way GW staff have gone. I used to love going down to my local GW a few years back but now, I'll do anything to avoid it. I'm lucky enough to live near a good indie retailer (Wargames Emporium, literally three minutes walk away) and failing that I'll order online.

No painting skills are needed nowadays to work for GW. At the Sheffield store known as 'The Moor' the nobhead manager has a Daemons army which he has sprayed Gold, then washed with Devlan Mud. That's it. He calls them his 'Golden Demons'. Do you see what he did there? [foolish person].

Getting a job for GW is something i've been wanting to do for a while, but from what I hear here (and previously) i think i'll just be an accountant. unless a job in their finance department is available.

Just as this thread pops up today I was informed at work that is a vacancy at my local GW (where one of my cousins works, there are nice guys who work there).

Might go for it actually, I like to think I can paint well and I can learn the rules pretty quickly. Playing games and painting must beat slinging popcorn for a living anyway. :P

Yup.

Jason Smith.

To prove my point that he's a bell-end of the highest order, his Ork army has 2 FW Gargantuan Squiggoths in it, 1 painted fluorescent blue, the other fluorescent pink.

The day he sacked me I vowed to myself that one day i'd be leaping off a stage in Birmingham with a Slayer Sword in my hand to run the [well, someone needs a cool off period]er through.

thats fantastic El D :P

If i were him i would actually be scared of that post. Of course you would have to pop the tendons on your neck, get your shoulders ripped and make sure that the slayer sword was longer than a normal person is tall for the "giant from 300" effect, but sans that i would still be scared if i was him...

Used to work in the GW Factory in Glen Burnie MD in 1999. Worked in the packing department.
Now I have a career :)
I'm going to my local GW in the next few weeks with my all circa 1999 Tyranid army to pick a fight with the manager

I did a few months as a blue shirt in Edinburgh, during the reign of the legendary Richard Packer. Tried to get a transfer to Glasgow, but all their slots were filled because the company had just closed Braehead down at the time. April to July 2008, by the way.

Dave out.
