I'll start by saying my PC is old, I got it from work about 4 years ago and it was about 6+ then, as a result it has a CRT monitor, and as a result of that I thought it was on it's way out because sometimes when using Firefox it goes fuzzy - not so much whats on the site being viewed but the tab name, navigation bar, search bar etc.
It took a while to realise that it wasn't all tabs that did it, at first I thought it was random, but it seems to be certain sites:

Yahoo, Facebook, Play, Amazon, eBay - Fine
Ammobunker, iPlayer, a few other forums - Fuzzy

it then gets odder (well to me anyway) - the taskbar at teh bottom of the page also seems to go fuzzy/clear with the tabs, and so does my Desktop

Friend's suggestion is it may be Flash or Java related so I'll try and update them, any other suggestions well recieved (new computer is already on my list)

How queer. I'd suggest it's unlikely to be Flash/Java related simply because it's affecting the taskbar as well. Sounds more likely to be a graphics card/driver issue.

Stupid question, what colour are the sites it doesn't work on? AB is obviously black, and I'm guessing iPlayer has lots of moving images. Yahoo, FB, Play Amazon and eBay all have light, low graphics sites. Could be as simple as your graphics card having a mary when it has to deal wth lots of images? that said AB isn't really graphics intensive is it? hrm.

I guess being a ten year old computer you'll have the latest driver (probably last updated 5 years ago or so). If it was slightly newer I'd suggest a cheap gfx card to see if that helps, but I doubt you'll have an AGP slot, never mind PCIe, and getting PCI graphics cards is no longer a cheap business unless you go second hand.

You say it does it in Firefox, tried anything else? Does Chrome sit more lightly on the system, not sure.

Curious.

I've got a GeForce FX5500 in an AGP slot that seems to be fine, though will double check the drivers

Trying IE or Chrome is on the list

Well, you have lots of avatars that need to be displayed, and some as moving GIFs can hardly be helping.

I would recommend Opera - it's light on resources and a joy to use. Chrome is quite nice too. Bit of a daft question, but have you tried degaussing your monitor? Sometimes that can help. Failing that, check your drivers.

TRied Degausssing, tried updating Java and Flash - stilll the same

The fact that it is being 'controlled' by the choice of site I visit suggests that it is something telling the monitor the wrong thing rather than the monitor itself acting up

Yeah I agree with your logic, seems to make sense.

There has to be some differentiator between the sites where it's ok and where it's not.

I've seen monitor test software that will run a series of displays and get you to confirm picture quality. May be helpful in diagnosing the issue further?

Do you know anyone who has an agp card you could try in your system? Using a known working piece of hardware is always helpful in diagnosis, ditto on the monitor I guess.

hardware is possibly intermittent.
To test: Open up two browser windows one from each list, and leave them be for 10 minutes. Confirm if only one or both is fuzzy.

When the desktop gets fuzzy, does the windows toolbar also get fuzzy?
