So I picked up a book the other day, "Engage the enemy more closely" by Correlli Barnett all about the Royal Navy during World War Two. Long story short it's a fantastic book that really gets the imagination firing, plenty of narratives about the Atlantic convoys and most of all the last fleet actions of the RN in the Mediterranian Ocean. So it was halfway through this (and reading about HMS Warspite), that I decided I had to dust off my BFG stuff and concentrate on getting lots and lots of spaceships assembled and painted.

Here is what I had already. These were painted 10 years ago and will be repainted/recommissioned.

In total when finished I will have 30 Cruisers, 22 Destroyers, 14 Frigates, 3 Strike Cruisers, 1 Battleship and 3 Battle Barges. The intention is to have a grand fleet painted that I can dip in to for gaming and display.

First up is a test ship, photos to follow.

Impressive fleet, and it's good to see some more BFG up here.
I can't see the test ship though, what will the new scheme be like? I think there's a problem with you images, it looks like you've got two end-tags at the end of the each link. There might have to be a start link before the link, dunno if it's there and it's not showing.

*edit: Heh, ninja edited by Dean, everything's working now. :) edit*

It's been a while since I have uploaded anything and the photo gremlin got me.... The air has been blue here for the past 20 mins trying to figure out how it works lol.

So here we go with the test ship so far. Colour scheme is kinda the same based on north Atlantic camo (I know it makes no sense but I like the look). I'm still working out detais like how much effort I want to put in to each ship, checkered prows etc may be in the offing later in the day for some of them.

:P Dude... You've obviously found the [img ] tags in photobucket. I think you are then clicking the "Image" button here and using that tool for your posts... That second step isnt necessary. Just paste what you copied off photobucket into your post. Simples.

Fixed again. Go look at your posts and see what the code is supposed to look like

Yep you got that spot on, shame my first few post are always about how to load pictures ha-ha. The test ship will be finished over the weekend, I know it is nothing amazing or too different from the existing fleet so far but I will be trying out some different techniques that I didn't bother with 10 years ago so hopefully it will look better when finished.

Oh yeah I have 6 blackstone fortresses and a massive Chaos fleet as well.

Love, love, love Gothic. I was given a big box of this stuff a few weeks back (about 40 ships of all sizes) and I've been dying to kick off with them, but I've got enough on till after the bash. Your scheme looks lovely though.

Awesome sized fleet, although I say you need more battleships!
Test ship looks good, I like the idea of the camo.

It's as if someone WANTS me to get excited about ships, Empire of the Seas dealing with Nelson and Rodney last night really got me going :D

Battleships will be later, they are a pain to assemble and I wanted to get through the umpteen number of boxes my girlfriend keeps pointing at... Anyone know what the Latin would be for Warspite? I did a quick search and apparently spite came into use in the 1300's so I may have hit a dead end with that name...

Now update time. Prow shaded and highlighted (artificial lighting does not show the highlights much though) and gold banding, weapons and engine assembly added. More details will be added after they have stopped showing TANKS! on cable TV.

Looks good there, I like the red prow. Goes nicely with the golden trimmings and cannons. The stripes work really well too, that's a very effective scheme you've got there.

Here is the finished test ship. No name yet as I'm still trying to figure out how I want to name them all. I'm not too sure about the number on the prow, its something I did with my previous fleets but I think it looks out of place. I might give it a Devlan Mud wash to tone it down or go over it completely.

Now, escort squadron or strike cruiser (Salamanders) next....?

I think the idea of a wash might just finish the whole model off. As for the number, works for me personally.

Number looks ok, and I like the shading on the prow.

Now I want to see Salamanders ships next.

Thanks for all the comments :) I know that the log is not too exciting just yet but I'm getting the techniques together for the big push. Which leads me onto the next update....
I thought about strike cruisers and escorts, colour schemes and squadron sizes but at the last second was distracted by my already painted cruisers...so I decided to try updating one without re-spraying etc.

So we have before;

And after;

The whole of the body was given a diluted black wash, the previous brass sections painted gold and given a brown wash, gold banding painted on the prow and both the red and gold brown washed as well.

All in all I think a good result for a spur of the moment decision but let me know what you guys think.

Aw brilliant. I may pick up my BFG stuff tomorrow and have a go. You've really inspired me.

Edit- I'm like the AB thief as well, so I may be doing my own take on the red and white thing. This is also because I like X-Wings and BSG Vipers...
