I have not been totally idle toward the hobby in my forced absence. ;)

About nine months ago my gaming group decided that we should write a set of house rules to represent the Soul Reapers Chaos Marines. The Soul Reapers as many of you already know are my custom Chaos Space Marines Warhost. I have always wanted a truly unique Chaos Marines force that worship no particular deity over another, representing the best the Dark Gods have to offer. The Soul Reapers are just that, they are true believers in serving the pantheon of Chaos, gaining greater glory for them all.

The Soul Reapers are the last sane remnants of the World Eaters Seventeenth Great Company. They abandoned their Legion shortly after their arrival into the Eye of Terror. It was upon the daemon world of Terkerak that they learned of the artifacts of Salmora. There are twelve artifacts that when gathered together the Dark Gods are compelled to do the bidding of the bearer.

They have been on a quest to find the artifacts for the last ten thousand years. They have possession of three and are closing in on obtaining a fourth.

The Soul Reapers believe that once their Warlord has possession of all twelve artifacts that they can reunite with their Legion then finally crush the weakling Imperium once and for all.

Now that the background is out of the way here are a few of our reasons for doing this project.

I have up until we stared this project been content with the basic Chaos Marines backed up by a few Cult units, but once we started I knew that I wanted to distance the Soul Reapers from any particular Deity. After all the reason they left their Legion was because they were slipping into madness.

The basic Chaos Marine looks fine on paper, but under close scrutiny they aren’t very good for their points. This becomes even more apparent when compared to the Space Wolf Grey Hunter. They both cost the same amount of points, have the same standard wargear, with the GH being LD 8 and the CSM LD 9, but the GH gets 3 special rules. So we knew some sort of Special rule was in order.

Now we aren’t oblivious to the fact that not everything is comparable points wise, but up until the Dark Angels codex the prices of Loyalist and Traitor Wargear and Tanks was. We were careful not to really tinker with the point values of Wargear or units; in fact the only change we made was a drop in points for Chaos Bikers which were over-pointed.

So for the last six months we have been trying out different ideas and playtesting list options. We are finally at a point where we are opening the playtesting up to the greater gaming community for outside feedback.

Keep in mind that this is a bare bones playtest version of the book with the content and layout being geared towards getting the points values and Special Rules out for trial. The final version will be polished with lots of background and flavor. I have over 20 hours of dictated background fluff that needs to be cleaned up and transferred into text. (I needed to do something hobby related while getting healthy!)

Being as the Ammobunker is in my opinion the ultimate Hobby site, I wanted to share this project with you guys too. Honest feedback is appreciated, doesn’t matter if it is good or bad, but please try to be constructive.

The list looks good and very cohesive. The only entry that I don't truly understand is: Reaver, the siege specialists? Don't they use "lesser" chaos marines armies for such a slow and unrewarding task?

Thanks for the feedback. The Reaver Siege Marines are basically the Soul Reapers dedicated assault troops. They just happen to be good a breaching defensive lines if lesser Chaos Marine warbands are not available as fodder.
