Hello all! For my first real post, I need to ask some advice from all of you IG players here. In my slowly developing IG army, I plan on have 2 Veteran Squads and 1 Infantry Platoon plus whatever else looks cool. But anyway, I need some help with my Veterans. For my first squad I was thinking this:

Veteran Squad
x1 Sergeant Bastonne
x7 Guardsmen w/ Shotguns
x2 Guardsmen w/ Meltaguns (or should I do 3 meltaguns?)
Vox-caster (?)
Demolitions (?)
And then put 'em all in a Chimera

*Everything with (?) after it is what I really want advice on.

And then for the second Veteran Squad, all I know is that I want Gunnery Sergeant Harker. I was thinking of giving the squad Snipers and a heavy weapon team and then using the Catachan Devils rules he has to get his squad into cover and then just hunker down and shoot the enemy, but I really have no idea what I should do.

Please help!

Thanks!

Well from the sound of it, the first squad is close attack and the second is fire support.

So your loadout for the second squad sounds perfect, fits the ranged role perfectly. I'd probably give them lasguns instead of shotguns. Forward recon would allow them to defend their cover better, but carapace armour would make them a better standoff unit.

As for the first squad, you may as well take a third special weapon. Maybe a flamer if they're going to be up close and personal, or a third meltagun if you want it to be a real anti-tank powerhouse. Demolitions is a good idea, this unit is meant to hit hard and fast, even if they don't last very long they'll cause some real damage.

Hope that might help a wee bit

Yup, i'd give the first vet squad a heavy flamer. 3 meltas is nice but they become a one trick pony.

I agree with the other two, depends on the role you want, I've got 2 shotgun squads and 5 lasgun squads, and the lasguns fair better. I now attach 5 man stormtrooper squads to my vet squads (painted up the same) so they get serious hitting power, allowing the vets to specialise

I agree with the above but also with the vet squad with seargeant harker give them the Forward Sentries doctrine since you can't have carapace armour and your going to using them from long range. Also if you also want to make the quad more powerful at long range add a heavy weapon like a lascannon or missile launcer cause at bs4 it will be hard to miss.

Heavy flamer is a must. I don't understand the logic of never willingly entering hand to hand with guard. Even againt marines, they DO fail their saves! I played a game last week where I assaulted a 10 "man" necron squad with a necron lord. I forced them to run, abbandoning their fallen thus stopping their WBB. My commissar joined them for the next assault and they beat up the Necron Lord.

I swear, you'll win more games by having a positive mental attitude, get those boys into the fight! (btw, that's why I take shotguns too)

Completly agree with digits, played my brother the other day and his (mine really but he plays sometimes) vet squad with harker, two flamers a heavy flamer and a demo charge destroyed a slightly under stregnth ten man sternguard squad as well as wounding hestan who was joined with them.

Would a Harker Unit with a heavy weapons team and 3 Grenade Launchers be effective ? or are snipers the best load out ?

If I were expecting them to be static (maximise the use of the heavy team), then I'd be inclined to take snipers over launchers.

My personal preference is Harker, Heavy flamer (awsome weapon) and two meltas. I can keep them moving and shooting, take down vehicles, hoardes and monstrous creatures.

Plasma guns aswell!
Don't. On the chimera squad you want the meltas +hv flamer (i agree with Digits on it's awesomeness) and probably demolitions. as they are all assault weapons, you can assault with them after firing, and with a sergeant with power fist, thats a lot of hurt for the enemy. A plasma gun would stop the squad from firing, its range would be wasted and gets hot! wolud probably be the end of a guardsman, not to mention the loss of a meltagun or heavy flamer.

On the other squad it would make more sense, but I wouldn't taake it. Gets hot would probably kill another guardsman, and it's job could be done just as easily by an autocannon or las cannon. In the platoon they're fine, or in a command squad (FnP+armour save).

Do what you want, but personally i would not take one with veterans, in Harker's squad, snipers and heavy weapons platforms are what i would use. And the terminators arguement is bad, as a plasma gun would take one maybe two if you were lucky with it.

With bastonne I would use lasguns to take advantage of "1st rank 2nd rank", and I would also use 3 plasma guns and an auto cannon to take advantage of "Bring it down" and make them excellent light/transport tank and monstrous creature hunters.

With Harker I stick with 3 grenade launchers and demolitions, With move through cover & stealth, the grenade launchers allow you to keep on the move as they are assault weapons and firing krak you have 6 S5/6 Ap4 shots as well as the demo charge which can be useful for attacks of opportunity especially with Infiltrate.
