Bagpuss' Kryomek & Song of Blades and Heroes; Something old, something new

Evening everyone. I'm new around here, so please be gentle :$

So a little bit of background. I like a game called Kryomek, which I believe was released in 1991. It's a Sci-Fi skirmish game, on roughly the same scale as 40k, but the background is a lot harder - think Aliens rather than gothic grim-dark, complete with off world colonies & terraforming, huge corporations, and colonial marines. The rules have a few neat mechanisms including alternate activation and the fact that everything is based off one resolution chart with a D20. It's the background which first attracted me to the game while all my pals were playing Rogue Trader, and it's very focused, based around humanity's conflict with a race called the Kryomek, which are kind of a cross between Aliens and Tyranids.

It also had it's own range of miniatures, which are still available from Scotia Grendel. One of the force-lists available is that of cyclos - they're convicts which have had a neural regulator embeded into the skull to control they're aggression levels. They're some of the most characterful figures in the range, and I'm currently puting together a cention of them.

Anyhoo, enough talk, more pictures. (I know that's what you like around here!)

Cyclo units:

Put together a few of those and you end up with a platoon - they'll be two of these in the cention:

These will be backed up by a platoon of elites:

I'll also have a command squad of regulars:

A couple of APCs:

And a couple of walkers called Ravens:

And a gratuitous shot to celebrate the re-release of a fairly high-profile board game:

I'll be adding more as I get round to painting them. My skill with the brushes isn't great, and what with running a business and keeping two little'uns entertained, I don't have a huge amount of time to devote to it, but I hope you'll find something here interesting.

Never heard of the game but the models do actually look a bit familiar. Nice to see them make an appearance and they turned out very nice. Not so keen on the vehicle models but the infantry look good.

And thumbs up for the 1st Ed SH...still got those myself in a draw somewhere (and the new one...)

I do like. Love the nid/alien cross, although I think that might be a contradiction since nids are alien inspired. However, lovely paint job. Did you use the citadel washes, cos those models would suit them down to the ground.

Kryomek, now there's a blast from the past I used to love that game! My favourites were the Predator battle suits, I love those models.
Great job on the Cyclo platoon and the marines look good as well. I like the paint job on the warmaster and the rest of the Kryomek.
Definitely going to be watching this one with interest. :)

Thanks guys.

Another couple of shots to keep you happy for the time being, this time SWAT Marines. These are the flower of the Nexus military, and all have power armour. Not as bulky as GW marines, but I like them - they've certainly got an early 90s charm about them. Sculpted by Bob Olley I believe.

Hopefully have some more cyclos finished by the weekend.

The Cyclo troops are great and you have made a much better job of painting them that the pictures on the Scotia Grendel site :) .

I am not a fan of the command models or the SWAT marines...they just don't look right (the painting is very nice, so it isn't your fault ;) ).

The Kryomek aliens are the best painted versions I have ever seen for the minis! You have really brought them to life...kudos to you!

It is great to see these being painted to a nice standard. I saw them on the Scotia Grendel site and wasn't that impressed but you may have changed my mind :) .

Thanks for the comments.

@Inso - I know what you mean, the photos on the site, where they even have them, are pretty poor. I've never understood why someone selling figures wouldn't have the best photos available for customers to see their product in the best possible light. I can only imagine the number of people who've browsed the site, been disappointed with what they saw, and moved on never to return.

Okey-Dokey - a quick update to show I've not dropped dead. Not got as much done as I was hoping, but I was able to knock out a few more convicts:

I'm currently waiting on an order, but I may have a crack at a couple of colonial marines in the meantime.

Word.

The postman was kind enough to drop my next few bits and bobs in today:

Now just need to get them ready for some paint. Man, I hate prepping figures.
