That I like Digits. I would go with it also. A "Masterclass Mini of the month" (or longer for those people who take more that a 2 days to paint a mini) and "Mini of the Month" for people like me!!! El Diablo- You just did!!! Edited by marcineczek0, 17 Oct 2009, 06:49 PM.

A masterclass thread sounds really interesting. A layer by layer account of El D's Nurgle marines, Warpy's Guard or Ricky's Tau would be very interesting to see. Highly educational too, and I think a lot of people would be able to take something away from such articles, like the importance of intermediate layering, controlled washing or even simply thinning paints. Who wants to go first on the altar, then? Dave out. |

I don't think that's quite what Digits was on about, otherwise we have the 'Special Olympics' discussion that you were on about. The jist of what Digits said was to have one competiton for single mini and also every month, one painter, maybe say the winner of the previous month would have to run a seperate, non competitive masterclass on a different miniature. Kind of 'giving something back'. I have six Gun Drones to paint but then I'd be more than happy to run the first Masterclass on my Ethereal, seperate to any competition to set the standard for future winners. |

Hmm... Wow I got it all wron. It's like I haven't even read what Digits said in his post. Sorry and thanks for corecting me. Now... i think it's a good idea. We could even do it for the other competitions. I for one would love to help anyone who wants to make terrain. Edited by marcineczek0, 17 Oct 2009, 07:14 PM.

No, what I meant was that "ordinary" folk (not meant to patronise!) start a mini in the thread. The panel of chosen (we can vary it month to month) then help and guide the guy with each layer if necessary. The idea is that those who want to have a real go at producing a knock out mini learn the skills for themselves, put in the hours etc with the help of the panel. |

We would need to put it in say the compo / tutorial area, and put up rules that the only posters were the teachers and pupils.

Right, so a seperate thread to the competition, but still in the competition area. A thread per mini I assume so things don't get confused. That way, possibly someone who lacked certain knowledge could begin to produce competition standard work? Am I right? It'd be up to the mods or whoever to appoint 'helpers' though from the off, I'd like it to be known that I'd be willing to do that on a permanent basis. I'm certainly on here enough. |

That's the gist of it Ricky. The spirit of this site is improvement and help. Seperating the usual project logs wows and banter (which is great!) from that of pure assistance. It can start at the begininig (what mini do I use (ie which will get the chance to try new techniques ), how to base it, undercoating basis, colour selection, where to apply the first brush etc etc. I know much of this can be asked for and is received in the project log areas, but it gets interspersed with a lot of other posts AND the thread can get overlooked among the myriad of threads. All the finished minis can be collated in a comments thread where everyone else can heap praise afterwards. Once each mini is finished, the thread gets closed so the active ones remain at the top. But for someone genuinely willing to listen to the panel AND act upon it, take piccies at each stage of their mini etc, it could be a real way of them improving their skills. That way we could actually groom each other into better painters? And having several advisors would provide several viewpoints, which in turn would inform and learn each advisor in itself. Everyone would win. It sounds almost Utopian in it's brilliance.

So what you say Digits if I wanted to get personal tutor in painting my miniature I would need to start a thread and than a "helper" would be apointed to help me? |

More like a 'board' of helpers who would help everone who started a thread in the relevant section. Then differing viewpoints could be presented. |

The panel would be the helpers. Maybe five hand picked painters of note. Alternatively, we could have a team of which say two are assigned to each thread......what does everyone think would work best? Would too many guys end up confusing? Maybe one would be better? I'd probably go with a couple per thread, that way everyone gets a go, and the expertise is applied to the correct piece. ie: Someone wants to paint Guard, put 2 painters known for good looking guard into that thread. |

Ok I think it might work. I know I would be interested in some constructive help from better paintes. I know that asking questions in logs might not work because everybody wants to be nice (polite) and won't tell you that your mini isn't very good. In that, they won't tell you what really needs to be changed... Damn... I keep getting ninja'ed by everyone. I agree with El Diablo... at least 2 Experts for specific project Edited by marcineczek0, 17 Oct 2009, 07:51 PM.

Two sounds good. Another thought, rather than in the areas I suggested before, perhaps this should be a subforum of Project Logs (in the same way "Tale of " is set up. Concious we've hijecked this thread we should move this elsewhere.... I will ask Wolfie to set up the directory for us. Meanwhile, we will need a panel of painters who are willing to give up their time and skills. Please pm me for initial consideration. btw - this is not necessarily limited to improving painting. Perhaps someone wishing to improve gs skills or scratch skills could also benefit..... |

I don't think the thread has been hijacked Dave. I think we have found our way to the heart of the entire matter. |
