Factory/Refinery Industrial Terrain; First time stab at intact structures

Recently started to chronicle build projects I have going, and the link below details the first which is relatively close to completion. Still WIP obviously, but close to final and awaiting the 'drybrush' (plus minor bits and bobbles, and a sidewalk or two).

I realize it may be difficult to pick out detail from a piece that is only primed, but I’d appreciate any thoughts or input.

Building One

Below is a link to some shots of the full game table, with the various pieces tossed on in a mock-up of the final result.

Full Table Mock-Up

Appreciate and comments or suggestions. Thanks for taking a look.

Looks good. What's the main block, some kind of junction box?

And welcome to AB!

The main structure is a four-gang electrical box with the securing flanges dremmel'd off (plus a fair amount of sanding).

Thanks for the welcome. Long-time listener, first-time caller. :)

May have to look at those boxes myself. Like you, I prefer intact industrial scenery (though rusty!).

My only quibble with what you've done so far is the sticking of the chimera door on the roof. Unfortunately it just screams "chimera door"!

I always wanted to ask this and it may sound silly but why to all Imperial builings look like churches?

Because normal buildings are shrines to the Emperor, and industrial buidlings are shrines to the omissiah maybe?

Nice work, on the terrain, although got to agree with digits on the chimera door. Might look better if you could rescess it slightly.

Yeah, the Imperium is basically the Vatican city on a galactic scale. Plus, from a design standpoint, it gives a unique flavour and yet makes them identifiable to most people.

Dave out.

Hrm... so the Chimera hatch really bothers you guys that much? I'll see what I can do.

Thanks for the input. Much appreciated.

Look really nice fella. I have a penchant for industrial terrain and this really looks the business. What kind of grating are you using?

Regarding the mock up - you need to do some roads to go with the buildings, would really add to the terrain. Keep up the good work, I will be watching.

The grating is something the boss tells me is called "plastic canvas" (she picked it up for me at a craft store), which can be found in the yarn section in huge lots relatively cheaply. Easy to work with and cut, but flexible. Can be a pain to brace in larger sections.

As far as the roads, I agree. In theory the battleship grey we recently painted the table sounded good, but it's just not enough.

I can't say as the Chimera door bothers me TBH. Good solid work.

I've been looking for a wire mesh, but I'd NEVER thought of using that stuff. Completely forgot it existed.

I really really love the terrain. It's awesome. I went on a steampunk kick a month or so ago, and decided I wanted an abandoned factory game board. With pipes and pressure gauges and giant water tanks and the such. I dont much like the Manufactorum building from the cities of death stuff. I've definitely taken inspiration from yours, really nicely done.
