I was thrilled to find that my bank are replacing my maestro solo card with a visa one. FW wont take my card, because it doesn't have a start date. ^o) The new Visa one does, whoopee!

But FW taking paypal would be fully awesome! :D I cant say I've ever really bought stuff on the GW website though.. I just dont have the patience for it to arrive in the post, when I could pop out to the GW store in Basingstoke and get it immediately. :ermm:

Well while it's not Paypal related, I found this quite interesting.

Link!

Quite nice of them to do it in my view.

Good idea in the run up to Christmas, at least for us. Royal Mail are gonna be losing custom hand over fist through christmas.

I think that's a great idea to be fair. It's like having your order sent special delivery but not having to pay for it.

Well, I havent gotten a PayPal account yet.

Offtopic: What are those Royal Mail people gonna strike about THIS time? They seem to strike on and off all the time and their services are useless, it took 3 weeks for a letter to go from the UK to Sweden ....

same as usual probably - they want moar monies, and are complaining at the fact that other companies can do the sorting of things cheaper and quicker by using machines

I thought they were striking because there is a D in every day of the week.

Personally I'd be more [tinkle]ed if there were a A or a Y, and god help me if there were a W in the week, I'd go postal :)

They strike because they can, but it's going to ruin them. I believe Amazon have already moved to a different company as, clearly, have GW. If others follow suit (and I'm sure they are going to), they will strike themselves out of a job.

Sadly for them, they hope to emulate their fellow french strikers and get somewhere. Have they not learnt from Maggie and the miners that this country won't stand for that anymore?

It's to with redundancies and pay cuts. Management trying to screw them over, they don't want a strike but the union says they have to.
I've been on strike and it ain't fun, I've seen truly horrific things happen to anyone who goes in whilst on they're on strike as well.
You got two options as a post man get bullied by management or bullied by the union.
Either way as a postie you're screwed, no way in hell I'd ever work for Royal Mail again it was the worst six years of my life. :(

It's complicated but it's all to do with the management intentionally running the place into the ground to force privatisation.

As I a teacher I have had to strike but I only took part cos I wanted the day off, but we don't suffer bullying if we do go in.

What I don't understand though, is that postie's complain about having too much mail to deliver, yet modernisation with sorting machines would free up staff to help deliver, thereby reducing the load on those on the rounds allowing two deliveries a day again. Or have I over symplified that?

No mate not at all. :)

It's hard to explain really. In reality what you describe is a good idea but the way royal mail works is that such machines would be an opportunity to get rid of staff rather than divert man power to the actual deliveries. So by investing in technology you are basically providing an opportunity to cut jobs in their twisted logic.
So you still have the back log but no-longer have the manpower to deliver it.

Management at royal mail are on another planet to the rest of us and have made some god awful decisions over the years, the millions wasted on re-branding the post offices as Consignia then dumping the idea is a good example.
Closing of local post offices, relocating distribution centres, cutting down on staff and a whole heap of stuff that could be treated as highly immoral and that I certainly can't post here on a family friendly board.

The managers when I was there were little more than con-men, one Christmas for example we were behind on our targets for getting the post out and an inspector was due to come around and check how we were doing. The managers got people to load up vans full of post and hide them in the car park. The inspectors came round and it appeared as though we were clear when we weren't.

I've seen loads of guys have nervous breakdowns because they are being worked too hard, seen guys crack from bullying from managers and co-workers and one guy I knew fell asleep behind the wheel and died whilst driving home because he was working too many hours.
The general attitude was if you don't like it then leave, but when you got bills and no other obvious source of income it's not that easy. Fortunately I managed to sort my affairs out and jump into another job.

I can't say what it's like now as I left about ten years ago but from mates I've spoken to that still work there it's not changed that much. :(

I do agree though that this is going to cause more problems, with any luck other companies will spring up and the posties can go work for them and get treated better. Trouble is privatisation has been a topic at the post office for the past twenty years and nothing has ever come of it.
