Just a few thoughts from me. 1. If its a CGI straight to DVD, well thats a mixed sign of quality, but as a business decision it makes sense to dip their toe into the waters first, its still not a mainstream Intellectual Property after all. 2. I'd prefer to see more of the depth of the 40k universe that really portrays it truthfully as the grim, gothic dark horrific future - inquisitors, hive worlds, mutants, impartial law and order (I'd never call it justice) etc. Marines are the decorative icing on the many layered cake that is the Imperium - shiny and cool, but not necessarily typical of the reality, in my view. 3. What's with all the Ultramarines bashing? Sure they always get attached to the "standard" codex, but thats whether the rules and special units are vanilla or not, not the chapter themselves. They have a characterful history that makes them just as unique as other chapters. Their own region of worlds, a primarch in statis who practically rebuilt the imperium himself, a first company decimated by tyranids and gradually rebuilding. Just because they set up the rules on how space marine chapters should work everyone writes them off as bland. Me, I'd love to see an Ultramar planetary defence force supporting some marines, now that would be a characterful mix to model.

Coming from the guy who thought Wolverine: Origins was a good film. I'll wait to see, as I said, some footage before I pass judgement. Waiting for evidence before crying out for condemnation... That's called justice. |

Oh wonderful, just what we need, eh? Flaming each other over a movie that has only just been confirmed and won't see the light of day for another year, at least. I, for one, am looking forward to this. I think it'll be interesting to see what gets done both naratively and visually. I'm not expecting a grand story in 70 minutes, more a 300-esque tale of a cool event being told by a librarian to a group of marines before a really big battle. And as long as they pay some homage to the Greek styling of the Umtramarines, I'll be happy. In fact, this may be GW's chance to reinvent the Ultramarines as something more than vanilla and boring in most people's eyse. I don't see why we're drawing battlelines yet. Films have been underhyped that turned out to be gems, films have been brutally overhyped that turned out to be total [Not on the floor please]. And as for the Ultramarine bashing, its as overused as anything Lukas says about World War Two. Dave out. |

With regards to the '300' reference. Please, dear god no. While I'm sure that replaceing an abundance of waxed chests with power armour, and spears with bolters would no doubt excite some people, it'd result in a face-palm moment so powerful, that it would be quite capable of ending my life... I remember trawling through threads on Warseer and other assorted sites back when the trailer for '300' was released, and the amount of 'if this were Space Marines' comments, was rather high, but that in itself doesn't justify it. It'd be a complete cop-out, storywise, not to mention probably liable for a law-suit. It may be 40K, but I'm sure the writer's can do better. So please, let them not go down that route... (Also edited my first post, in case people believed I was slating the Ultramarines.) Reactionary rant over... ![]() |

I'm not drawing battlelines Dave, if anything I'm trying to prevent them from happening. I'm not of the opinion that this will be bad, neither do I think it'll be good. I'm merely pointing out that it's impossible to pass judgement on something that doesn't exist yet. Not a screenshot, no concept art, not a second of footage. How can anybody make any kind of opinion as to the quality of a film without: a) A precedent (ie: If this were a sequel to a bad film/line of films). b) Anything to see other than an unlaunched website. It's ridiculous to be judging this based on nothing. Nothing at all. In the face of that nothing I prefer cautious optimism over 'OMG! Tis will b suxxorz!'. People said Dawn of War would be crap when it entered development and look where that turned out. Edited by The Antipope, 1 Oct 2009, 06:14 PM.

Grizz: I didn't say 300 with space marines. I said something in that basic vein, its actually the librarian telling the story of some cool event during the heresy thats only been mentioned in passing to the assembled chapter on the eve of some big, and probably Ultramar based, battle. Or something. Hmm, maybe they'll let McNeill near the script. Ricky: I know you weren't, you were only responding to Andy's ignorance. Dave out. |

It may be in the basic vein Dave, but folk are still going to walk away from it thinking 'they just ripped off '300'!' if indeed, as your first comment was, this took place before a grand battle. Now yes, having had you clarify yourself a bit, I can now do the same. What I don't want to see, is the Librarian finish his story, and then fling himself headfirst at the enemy in whatever manner he sees fit. No. Just, no. If, as you say, he could be reciting his story, perhaps to some initiates. Hell, maybe even a chaplain could be doing it, in a sermon for example, then I'd certainly find that far better, and if that is indeed what you were trying to describe, then I'm with you on that one. |

I enjoyed the first Star ship trooper movie yet it was still crap. And also this is my opinion, that I have full faith that this 40k movie will also be crap but it maybeenjoyable. Example, when i heard news of a dragon ball movie I knew it would be crap and guess what it was although I enjoyed it. |

I have to agree that it might be good if it's the same quality as the DOW2 trailer but they are playing their cards right doing a straight to DVD release because it can be marketed directly to their target audience. If anyone outside the hobby watches it then it'll be a bonus. |
