INTRODUCING ULTRAMARINES – A WARHAMMER 40,000 MOVIE!

The moment fans have been waiting for is finally here... for the first time, the Warhammer 40,000 universe will be realised in a feature-length movie on DVD.

Ultramarines is a 70-minute sci-fi thriller that will use CGI and state-of-the-art animation production techniques. Games Workshop is delighted to be working with UK-based production company Codex Pictures, who have the momentous task of bringing the Warhammer 40,000 universe to the screen.

No, he doesn't.

He's, I'd imagine, basing it on all the other spin-off movies that have come out over the years, be it based on video games, comic books etc, that by and large, are either love em', or hate em'.

That, and it's probably going to be very difficult to portray a Space Marine properly, and have a suitable character progression in approximately 70 minutes, a fair bit of which will no doubt be action orientated.

It's also focused on the Ultramarines, one of the most lambasted chapters out there, labelled as 'boring', and 'vanilla' (Not something I personally agree with, I find them just as interesting as any other chapter). You get the drift I'm sure.

So those three points to start us off.

Personally, I'll reserve judgement until I've seen it.

When I think of a Space Marine, I think the Spartan II's from Halo Wars but with less acrobatics. Basically, if the movie is just like a video game cutscene for 70 minutes I'll be happy.

I don't need any idea of plot (cos it won't have one) effecsts/technology don't make a good movie.

So basically what Grizz said, the 40k universe will never make a good 70 minutes movie.

All movies base on a Computer game have been rubbish even the enjoyable tomb raider ones.

I may have very bleak view of this film but I am pretty positive I'll be provide right.

yeh, personally i loved the doom movie, albeit with the somewhat different path it took to the games in terms of explaining the demons...

If I get to watch Ultramarines die in increasingly horrible and painful ways i'll watch it.
Doom movie was good, but I freaked some friends out when I shouted 'EOMER!' about halfway through after realising where I'd seen Reaper before >_>

The honest truth is a large number of people will (ie me) will end up buying it just to see what it's like. And yeah, the Smurfs are labelled as boring - but when they are leaping around on the battlefield, they're likely to be ripping Xenos apart the same as any other marine chapter.

Shame is, as we were discussing at GD, they could very easilly make a film of say Ravenor or of imperial guard, and it could actually be very easilly done and well.

I understand where you are coming from but perhpas it might be prudent to wait until we see at least 1 second of footage before you jump to such an extreme conclusion.

I have little faith in this and I am very confident I will be justified.

Entertainment officer...Meet the gang cos the boys are here.....
The way to view this is that it is a dip of the toe in the water of cinema.

The fan base has been crying out for a movie for years. Just put a search on Warseer for 40K movie and see how many come up. This may go down several paths. 1- DVD only and only the fan base go for it. 2- DVD only but with a wider distribution which draws the kids to the hobby. 3 the DVD goes massive and hollywood beckons. Thats the dangerous option because this is where selling of souls occurs and this is where Mattel's ears perk up

They are asking peoples opinion. As I mentioned elsewhere I was asked what I thought and what in my opinion would make a good 40k movie. For me thats not Marines as they dont for me portray the depth of the universe but I am probably thinking about this in Holliywood terms IE how to introduce 40K to the world in a way that makes them want to see movie after movie after movie. And you could. Every BL book could become one (ok not the GS Goto ones ....please dear godd no!) However i'm not sure that is very wise.

At the heart of Wolvies objection is that the 40K universe is vast and it is not possible to convey that in 70 minutes. The street fighter analogy is a bit hash I think and I dont think thats the plan here but yeah i do share a fear of what holliwood does with Game based films .

I think we are likely to see a DOW2/space marine, out of game style footage. I suspect that me may perhaps see something like either a specific Ultramarine mission or perhaps even Macragge. But again 'Dont panic! This is a Test'

besides so long as George Lucas isnt involved and no one involved in the clone wars is allowed anywhere near it then it cant be too bad

To think I thought 'd actually coined giving them the nickname Smurfs o.o should have known other people would see the resemblance really >_>
Calgar seems a lot less imposing when you call him Papa Smurf ^_^

And if Abaddons in it for some reason...wasn't he rumoured to be clone? O.o In fact...all these 'Marines' who do rather look a bit stormtroopy and work for the ahem Emperor in y'know..an empire >_> were all genectically enginneered and are well...a bit cloney O.o

But marines can shoot straight.

I'm finding it very difficult to see how this could be good, but you never know. It might at least be entertaining. I tend to agree that the story would be better if it was about a human protagonist* in the 'darkest, most brutal regime imaginable' (rather than one of its Genetically Engineered enforcers) but I have a feeling it won't be heavy on story.

*I'd go with a Inquisitor and his or her retinue, myself. I'm thinking Kryptmann or one of the other Ordo Xenos who go around fighting back the alien tide with one hand while trying to hold off the Imperial authorities with the other. Not one of those Inquisitors who spends all his time setting fire to people for having a bit of a squint.
