Nope, not the case unless you get stinking drunk and start squaring up to people for no reason. Or you leave the safety of the city centre.

and go near Ibrox

Hey, Strathclyde is great! Its right in the city centre, and is all campusy so you're ten minutes walk from everything. And, being from Englandshire, you'd have a room with your name on it in halls as soon as you filled in a form. What, provisionally, would you be going to study?

accounting and finance :)

my choices at the moment are these, in this order (although there isnt actually an order on the form)
Lancaster
Nottingham
Newcastle
Northumbria
Teeside

so Strathclyde is out at the moment. it was out after i heard that one of my mates got chased out of a pub in Dundee (where he is at Uni) just for being English

Glasgow is only a few hours drive from being on the lovely west coast, so if your up for a drive one day you can always take a tri[ up the west coast along past Oban, up to Fort William (where you can see Ben Nevis from, the highest mountain in Britain). All doable in a day, if your going to be hiring a car that is, or bringing your own.

Not sure about if I'll have a car available to me; if i do, I'll certainly keep that advice in mind. Thank you.

Since this thread seems to be heading off in this direction, is there anything I should be sure NOT to say/do? Other than not be the typical 'ugly American'?

Yep. Just remember that you're in a country that, following the CIA's hissy fit over Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi's recent release from prison, isn't in the best of minds about the states. Mind you, most Americans I have had the pleasure of meeting have done everything in their power to not be stereotypical Americans. Oh, and if you happen by a kebab shop at 3 a.m. you must buy yourself a munchie box. Chances are you'll never get one back home and they're just too good to pass up.

Actually Dave, its also the Americans who are [tinkle]ed at us for releasing him. It was an American flight afterall, and most passengers were Americans, the Scottish fatalities where from when it hit the ground.

So actually the Scots and the Americans are both [tinkle]ed at the [foolish person], scuse my french, who released him, rather than each other.

Ach you will be fine mate, just enjoy your time over here, see the sights, it is a really beautiful country if you get the chance to get out into the countryside, and go see the Highlands.

And who are you to lecture me on politics and foreign affairs! :P

That said, being the head of the foreign intelligence agency and phoning the offending country's justice secretary's personal assistant at three in the morning to find out where the justice secretary lives so one of your senior agents can drive from London to Edinburgh to hand deliver a letter detailing how annoyed you are is something so gutsy that not even we wouldn't have tried it under Queen Victoria.

If you like Doctor Who there's a relatively similar Police Box in the city centre. And lots of grey, grey concrete and rusted corrugated metal. I found it quite desolate all in all but as I understand it the Scots like desolation. I think it's a matter of pride how grim something can be in Glasgow.

Edinburgh is much nicer I think than Glasgow if you get the chance to take the train over. There are also old blue police boxes in Edinburgh too. There is even one painted dull red which is used as a little coffee stand, tis neat!
