Hello all,

With the new Imperial Guard Codex out, I am wanting to collect an army of these maniacs, and see if I can come up with anything decent with them. I am a big fan of Tanks, so I have taken at least 2.

The trick with this army is to form a gunline, with a combined infantry squad taking my home objective. Then have my assault units to take objectives and generally cause havoc.

My main oppoments are Orks, Eldar and Marines of Chaos Imperial and all other flavors:

HQ

*Company HQ Command Squad: 255pts
-Iron Hand Straken
-Medi pack
-2 Flamers
-Regimental Standard
*Chimera
-Heavy Flamer

With these guys, the main idea is to support the Veteran Assault, with IHS in the squad, it is a nasty assault unit that can take tanks down. I have edited the squad so its a bit cheaper, and it is much more of a punch againsr horde armies.

ELITES

*10 Stormtroopers
-2x Plasmagun
-incl: Sarge w/ Bolter

I changed this unit so it had 10 men with 2 plasmas so that more bodies could be taken off before the plasmas had to go. These guys are here to 'clean' troops off of objectives, before the vets come in a mop up the rest of them and take the objective. In kill point missions, they'll go after the biggest, scariest unit around, and shoot it to death. Still keeping these guys because they are so awesome.

TROOPS

*Guard Platoon

*Platoon Command: 52pts
-4 Flamers
-Officer w/ Bolt Pistol and CCW

'Fire' support unit literally, these guys will burn enemies in cover approaching my objective holding Guardsmen.

*3x Guard Squads: 195pts
-Grenade launcher
-Autocannon

These 3 Squads will hold my base objective. Autocannons are really good in the new codex, so to be honest, I had to get some! The ammount of fire power these guys can do is nice, especially with orders.

Attached Mortar Team: 60pts

Horde players are going to hate me for these. Cheap and cheerful, these guys can rain the pain upon enemies like orks and nids. Against marines, weight of firepower is always good.

*10x Veterans: 130pts
-Demolitions
-3 Meltaguns

*10x Veterans: 115pts
-3 Plasma Guns

These guys will go into the Vendettas, and will grab objectives off of the enemy. In Kill Points, I will set the units off anti tanking for the melta unit, or Space Marine hunting for the plasma unit.

FAST ATTACK

*Vendetta: 130pts

*Vendetta: 130pts

Anti Tank, and transports for Vets.

*3x Sentinals: 120pts
-Heavy Flamers

I think these guys will be good, as the extra Heavy Flamers will reign king on a cover filled Battlefield that I tend to be in all the time.

HEAVY SUPPORT

*3x Demolishers: 615pts
-Plasma Cannons

Well, 3 is the magic number ain't it? Demolishers took over from the punishers as they seem to work better then anything else, and they kill things good with the AP2 Str 10 Blasts. These are SEPERATE UNITS by the way :P

What does Ammobunker think?

Hmmmm. I've yet to see punisher in action but I worry you don't have any ranged anti tank tanks or heavy weapons teams. Appart fron the vendettas (which won't probably last long and will be your biggest "soaks") you have no real ranged firepower. Most of your anti tank stuff is close ranged (meltas, demos).

To me, the one overiding feature of a guard army is ordnance, therefore I'd opt for demolishers pertsonally (though I am biased). Give them meltas so they can run close, but the demolisher cannon is very effective against infantry and armour alike.

Also, drop a melta / plasma from each vet squad and give them a heavy flamer - much more effective for clearing objectives.

Thanks Digits for commenting :)

The list is going through a big change throughout the rest of this year until I actually buy it, so drastic changes can be made as I have no clue what I am doing!

I think Demolishers will be better, so I'll opt for them instead (cheaper as well) so I can then steal some points for the Heavy Flamers you were on about (I love them, just thought they weren't the best choice for vets).

Cheers,

They're perfect for vets. Vets / stormies are often the only chaps who'd get close enough to use one. If you're intending on taking objectives - you'll often need to clear it first - no cover saves!

Why not take one punisher and one demolisher?

I think its better to stick with one type of tank, then again its squadrons is it now?

How bout dropping one guard squad, one vet squad and a vendetta and having two demolishers and a punisher? Maybe try sliming the pricey command squad down and adding an anti tank heavy weapons team to your platoon?

Changed the List above.

@Digits: I added the Heavy Flamers on to the Sentinals instead, as I get the models anyway for what I am planning on buying.

@Angel: You can still have 3 seperate tanks if you want, like I have done. I added a mortar squad for some more anti horde.

Cheers,

Go post in someone's topic that you normally wouldn't
3 Separate tanks just take up 3 slots in Heavy, whilst a squadron takes up 1.

Yeah thats what I was getting at! 2 in one slot, 1 in another then you have a free slot for whatever?

I still think your vet squads are unbalanced. Much as I like meltas, and I take lots, 3 in a vet squad is overkill against a tank, usuful against meqs but doesn't give them flexibility enough for all comers. I still think you should have a heavy flamer.

Yes, the 3 tanks are 3 seperate choices.

I think vets are going to be a 'one hit wonder' as they are going to die, so they might as well be good at what they are doing :D Only reason why I didn't take the Heavy Flamers was that there was't enough points for them. 40pts is alot to get rid of in a list where everything has already been skimmed down.

Loose iron hand then! I'll be honest, expensive commanders in guard armies in my experience hardly ever get to fight up close. If your firepower is effective, you should stop the enemy getting near enough to him. If the enemy is that close, you've usually lost already!!! You've taken demolitions, as such a flamer would compliment it.

Anyway, it's your army so whatever you choose, I look forward to seeing the plog!
