got the WD today, and from what i've read so far, i like them. the idea of having the experienced guys in termie armour leading other units is rather cool, although it may get confusing. the Wolf helmet thing looks cool, although Canis Wolfborn has already been given the nickname by my mates that they gave me, in reference to his pathetic performance in the battle report.

edit: just had a look at the wolf pack sprue in WD. yes, there are 6 plasma pistols per box, but no flamer or melta guns :(

I sold 5 of the old wolf accessories sprues on the evil bay and it has paid for my 2 wolf pack boxes and halway towards the codex. Excellent!

Pen pusher at main office who appears to take the Alastair Darling method of recession recovery to heart. As far as is known he worships at the altar of the shareholder and not the hobbiest.
Tom Kirby was the guy that led the management buy out of the company in 1993 and Chairman and CEO since that time, last year stepped back from being CEO to just Chairman.

Also, if you follow the info, they don't do a whole lot aimed at shareholders and very little of what they have done has been to help the shareprice (which is poor compared to the market average to say the least), they're 70% owned by pension funds and long term investors, not short term people looking to milk the profit.

I do agree there are factors aimed at sales - the mid 90s plan of releasing each game as a new edition every 5 years in a cycle (Epic, WFB and 40k rolled out one per year back then etc). And I've never been a fan of the sidelining of the specialist games range. And no one likes it when a product they like gets pulled for lack of sales, or even closed down like the CCG.

But there's been a lot of good factors too with this guy at the helm.

- Rebirth of Bloodbowl & introduction of Specialist games (Necromunda, BFG, Mordhiem, Gorkamorka, Inquisitor)
- Forgeworld
- Black Library
- Warhammer Fantasy RPG
- Licencing of decent computer games at last (WAR, Dawn of War, Firewarrior)
- Development of the LotR range

Yes, its a company aimed at making a profit, and its gotten good at that for the most part, but I'd also suggest that their work has been pioneering in many areas and has opened up the hobby to a much wider audience than the traditional Historic Wargamers / D&D Geeks that used to be the image.

Sure the plastics are just as expensive as the metal miniatures, and they admit that's their goal right now, but for the most part the cost of metal wasn't the biggest factor and when you look at the cost of the plastic processes vs the cost of casting metal, its a lot more to set up. And its the sculptors, developers, shops, staff etc that are their main cost. Do you think that Jes Goodwin or the Perry twins would take a pay cut just because hobbiests think the plastics they make should be cheaper?

Liking the new Space Puppy stuff but saddened that 13th Company seems to have disappeared. Will have to force myself not to buy at Games Day, wait a couple of weeks to get them online much cheaper.

I'm another one thinking of a drop pod army, the Battleforce box seems an ideal excuse, couple of them plus some terminators and I'll be well on my way.

Cheers!

Checked and the Battleforce does seem to have two Packs in it, rather than 1 pack and 10 tac marines like I suspected. May pick that up as it'll start me on Drop pods that can go with the Blood Ravens.

Can you still take Bjorn as a HQ though?

SW dex always used to make a great proxy for Iron Hands armies.

I'm thinking of joing the SW bandwagon. I love Marine armies too much.

They do look awesome, and the character models (especially Najal and Canis) finally sold it to me. I may spend some of my Work wage on them...

I'm thinking the codex, battleforce and Wolf Guard Termies would be a good start.

SW can take 4 HQ units in one org chart. 2 Units per HQ slot. Which is to represent the fact that the leaders are very much prominant in their style of play.

I think I will get myself some of the new bits just to have a play about with and for the fun of painting them.

Why do they have a guy riding a giant squirrel in their army though?
Seriously, stick a big busy tail on that giant wolf and it looks just like a squirrel.

Why not just not bother with him at all. Even if it wasn't a crap model, it's still a crap concept full stop. It's the kind of thing that should have been dismissed immediately in development, but instead...ah, I just hate it.

It'd work quite nicely with a different bit of fluff attached to it. Plus gets rid of giant wolves my way - plus giant mutated wolves are fine if you've spent centuries in the warp like the 13th Company.

But then again they never came back :)
