Interesting thread, full props to the chap a few pages back whose relatives were in the Finnish winter war. That was nasty.

My grandpops was a Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion The Buffs, fought in North Africa and Italy. Didnt talk much about it i had to find it all out after he died. What a guy!

Hmmm...censorship of the judicial system...smacks of dictatorship and tyranny to me ;)

Please don't interest me in more cool minis. I've already failed the fantasy challenge in the first month due to life getting in the way, I have to save for a wedding, a trip to Tasmania, pay off a house AND fund a summer's worth of cider. I really, really can't spend any more money on minis. *sob*

Well, done a fair bit of military history, being military myself.

One grandad was a tool maker so was exempt, but ARP, my Gran spent weekends helping German prisoners in Nottingham on the fields, most actually settling down with local girls (Peter Bonneti, goalkeeper was one).

Other Grandad was a Royal Marine, screwed him up tho, became a violent man when he returned. his brother was a Desert Rat, I have his medals on the wall.

Two Great Grandads died due to gassing in WWI, one being a Machine Gun Corps Sgt.

Most unusual one was my ex-wifes grandad survived the war but got blown up after hunting down SS and escorting them back to Britain for warcrime trials, one had a hidden grenade.

I know my step-dad's father, well, since I call him dad, I suppose my adoptive grandpa, fought through the campaign liberating Italy. I think he went farther in after that, I'm not certain. My dad won't tell me the stories though, it takes too much out of him to even bring it up.

I love how a thread that started out with a member abusing other members about collecting weird war Germans just built interest in it :P

I got more information tonight. :) He was part of a tank crew, I need to find out which kind, but fighting as a Canadian it rounds it down a little. He fought through the Italy campaign and after that he fought in the liberation of Holland. I want to find out what kind of service medals he received. The silly thing about our government's online veteran resources is that they tend to only post information about you should you die in a war.

Edit: I can't confirm if he was part of the capture of Sicily, but the Canadian military did employ a tank division there, so it's possible.

Well I had a family member that faught in this "great" World War II. He didn't fight the Krauts, he faught the Russians. At the finnish frontier. At the last days of the winter war, his trench is hit by an artillery shell, fired during the russians massed artillery fire. (They fired for 12 hours, with no stop)

I'm proud, he did what he could for his country, and that is what matters for me. He faught for something, not for some Dictator ordering them to walk into somebody elses land(Prounonce Stalin,Hitler,Mussolini)

R.I.P Grandmumsdad.... R.I.P

One of my grandfathers was a farmer, so was exempt. My other grandfather signed up early for the British navy, but spent most of the war in port, because the ship was in constant need of repair.

On the other hand, my grandmother on that side, she went into Germany after the war as part of the relief effort to help the German civilian population rebuild. That part couldn't have been much fun, but at least there wasn't any shooting by that point.

Very interesting thread this. I don't have anything to add though. My grandparents are all too young to have fought in WWII, while the only great-grandfather I know anything about was a coal miner, so was amongst the exempt. I do know that my dad's grandmother was supposed to be on the Titanic but couldn't go because she fell ill. Does that count? Nothing to do with war, but it's a story!

I don't have much in the way of ancestry in the wars either... My Great Grandfather was killed on the Western front in the 1st World War but after that all my male relatives worked in the Zinc refineries which were protected industries.

LOL I can't beleive I missed page 1, where was I???

@BOD - you made me laugh and wake my baby up! Funny guy, it's 2356 here and I've woke the baby!

I had a good look at these mini's the other day, got some zombies, a nazi-flamer dude, SS-werewolf, American flamer dude and some of american troops in masks....lovely

Big props to all who have relatives that served in the past, and those who continue to do so now! I salute you all!

My granddad got to chuck flower bombs during the big one! Home guard as he was a farmer in Kent thus reserved occupation. Did help in the capture of a downed German pilot though I'm told, hope the bugger was wheat intolerant!!!!

Saw lots of bombs dropped as Jerry dropped unused ordnance over Kent on their return from bombing London.

Nan was an RAF theatre nurse.
