Now this is what I call nostalgia...

Posted Image

Imperial Army (not your new fandangled Guard mind you!) Minotaur circa 1987. See we used to make do with these brutes in my day not like you youngsters and your fancy plastic kits.
We had to get up half and hour before we went to bed, feed the abhumans, build most of our tanks from washing up bottles and we were bloody grateful!!!!

This is my idea of nostalgia. ;)
When you see that, makes the whingers look stupid. GW has come a long way over the years, and it may be the most expensive, but it's also the best, some companies still think that is an acceptable standard.

I regularly pull out my RT rulebook and 40k Compendium for a trip down memory lane. And a friend and I are thinking about starting up a Confrontation campaign. For those who don't remember it was the ultra-detailed and complex precursor to Necromunda.

And for improvements in the models just look at 1st ed. Space Hulk terminators...I'll try and get a pic up for those who haven't seen them.

It was the advent of crappy plastic models that first put me off the hobby. The first boxed game with its terrible and identical orks and marines was just gash. I think that was the advent of GW becoming more childish and losing it's way for a while. The darkness and humour started to leave and everything became too simplified. Nice to see a return to form happening. Even WD seems to be going back towards being a hobby magazine in recent months.

The book I really want to find is Waagh Da(The?) Orks. I've still got 'Ere We Go but can't find Waagh... anywhere.

Ahh, now I think there was another Confrontation wasn't/isn't there? Is that what was Laserburn? A non-GW one? GW's Confrontation was first published as a series in WD.

I have a couple of Confrontation articles from my first WDs I think (around 126 era) and its still the thing that really hooked me on GW - but I never got to play anything like it until Necromunda.

Also the one I look back at in the mags that I still wish I could have played was Dark Future - any road based gaming would be awesome if it came back.

Dark Future was the one I never played but always wanted to. I've got a DF novel, Route 666 (I think), that's really good.

I loved the level of detail with Confrontation and the accompanying artwork in WD. Really opened up a new level of the 40k universe I think.

No I mean the GW Confrontation they never finished in WD. Its basic rules are pretty similar to Laserburn written by one Bryan Ansell.

Think Laserburn originally came out before I was born too.

If they're the ones I'm thinking of, I rather liked them :) The odd bare arm or leg here and there? Or were they older than that?
I remember those, they were really cool models. The ones I mean are SERIOUSLY butt ugly. Once my camera has charged I'm posting pictures so be warned. :D

I was a massive fan of Dark Future, still got the models. Confrontation was another good one, I've got some of the gangers with the plastic arms lying about somewhere.

Route 666 was indeed a Dark Future novel - there's about 8 or 9 of them that GW actually republished not so long ago using the "Black Flame" branding (basically Black Library but for non-GW novels, they published a load of other sci fi tie ins like Judge Dredd) but unfortunately they seem to have taken that brand away now, so I'd guess if you wanted them you'd have to hunt Amazon and the like. They are great books though - Kim Newman (aka Jack Yoevil) wrote some of them and I love his stuff - especially the Genevieve series for Warhammer.

The jack Yeovil Dark Future ones are the best, particularly with the narrative going through them, and the madness of Comeback Tour with Elvis.

My first one was a strictly 40k catalogue, the cover was a pimpin' picture of Asmodai seeming to say, 'Hay guys!! Mah sword is teh biggest!!!!111one'.
I couldn't find the original catalogue cover, but this was the image on it that got me into the whole hobby. It wouldn't have been easy to ignore something that cool.

If we're talking real nostalgia then this is a bit of ancient history;

Got to love the old 'Eavy metal deamon banner. I figure I got it back in about 1989 or thereabouts with the Space Marine painting set that went with the release of the old RTB01 box set. There's some nice pages inside though, detailing the old markings systems and the individuality of marines as they used to be.
