So i just had an idea, how do people think a tau army fielding 72 fire warriors at 1000 points would fare up? All anti vehicle would be provided by the two battlesuits that complete the army... |

It should fair pretty well, my mate used to do something similar maxing out on fire warriors i could beat him with raptors but that was in the days of the old rules when u could consolidate from squad to squad. with 5th ed you could take out 1 squad of them with say assault marines in combat but they would then get gunned down in the next turn by the rest of the fire warriors. The only real threat against you would be IG armies with russes(or tanks in general) or mortars(mainly because the mortars can hide and shoot at you) |

well, you wouldnt lack squads to take objectives ![]() how would you work it? shoot at one target, wipe it out, move onto the next? take out all scoring units first, then take down the threats? |

I think it'd play a little like a fantasy force, but you'd be sound against most compact armies. I'm thinking of a couple of forces that'd give you a run for your money, though. Dave out. |

penny for your thoughts? I would probably focus on two units per turn, 3 squads on each unit... |

Yeah it wouldn't fare that well against armies like Orks or Nids that can get in combat quick. As well all know FWs are pants in CC. |

Mech guard, mainly. Decent AV on the front, as long as I keep that facing at you, and a plentitude of long range Tau busting guns. All units are nice and cheap. Dave out. |

Sounds like an army that would be fun to play and have a lot of character to it. Decent spacing, both in unit and between squads, to help limit the impact of template weapons, and some flanking use of the battlesuits to keep protected. What would you go with for arming the battlesuits? I like the idea of niche armies like these, they are cool to use and surprise people who will expect all sorts of other fancy stuff. I always wanted to try 1500 points of lasgun guardsmen, with a few meltas in command squads.......... |

I don't play Tau so take from this what you will, but I don't think it'd be very effective. Tau aren't really designed for gunlines, they need mobility to focus their firepower. The basic Firewarrior (in my opinion) isn't going to stand up to anything without proper support. They can't handle hordes well without a transport due to all the 4+ cover saves around, and they can't handle meq well because they're hiding in their transports (at least, they should be in 5th). Of course, if you have the models, it might be fun to try it out, but I wouldn't splash out on all those models before seeing if it really works on the table. |

Hmmmm, think some armies it will scythe down, some it will struggle with. You shouldn't have problems putting wounds on things, but a lack of high AP might be a problem against some armies. |

I disagree with your first point, against eldar and dark eldar gunline has always been the most effective tactic. Just let them run onto your guns and die. However against horde armies they would struggle... oh and i have the models

the huge disadvantage would be against armies fielding heavy armour, like the IG and certain SM players, if those suits are taken out, your fire warriors will be target practice for tanks

would defo struggle against a two landraider, two dread marine army, you have nothing to worry the tanks, which can shoot/tank shock you all day. dreads will be walking around killing FW's for laughs, throw in a couple of tac squads in the LR's for objective grabbing, maybe a scout squad with sniper rifles and game over mate! |
