so since a dreadnaught can assault a vehicle what does it hit on? Since it has a ws and my devilfish does not.

it hits automatically, the same way a grenade or melta bomb does

Mind though it only hits automatically if the vehicle you're attacking didn't move in its last movement phase or is Immobilized. The table on page 63 of the rulebook applies, since the Dread attacks like infantry do in close combat with a vehicle.

It was guarded by a green tide in the front and as it arrived a pair of terminator squads deep strook ( deep striked? haha) into my fire warrior line and required a shooting phase of my heavy fire power to put down(they had alot of power weapons and were in assault range of my suits and hammerheads.) I thinned the green tide out to where only one boyz squad lived long enough to charge my kroot and was swiftly destroyed the next shooting phase. A waaaaaghboss with 2+ save and good strength requires rail guns to be put down.

Short answer I got distracted by all the loud green things and didn't have bullets left over for a dread :P

A dreadnought hits in close combat vs. vehicle as follows:
If the vehicle is stationary/immobile: auto hit
If the vehicle moved at combat speed: 4+
If the vehicle moved over combat speed: only on a 6
If the vehicle is a skimmer, then the skimmer is only hit on a 6

Though completely off, a demolisher cannon shot landing on your Valkyrie really sucks!

If the vehicle is a skimmer, then the skimmer is only hit on a 6

I don't think that rule still exists in 5th edition, skimmers have to be on the move too nowadays to reduce the chance of getting hit in CC.
