The words "infra red" and "night sights" spring to mind. As well as a rather delicious tank tactic of shooting flares infront of enemy tanks, illuminating them and blinding the crews. |

I'd say first world war for me. It was just the sheer shock of how quickly warfare changed with the first world war and the entire of trench warfare. Plus you gotta love the Mk IV tank. |

I've always been a Napoleonic nut, 100 days campaign is my speciality. Also written a short essay for work on Vietnam and America's short commings, and the battle for the falkland islands, inspiring stuff. |

Battle of 1812....America tries to repay the French and "liberate" parts of canada fighting against so say second rate troops and end up losing their capital. Makes you wonder what would've happened had peace not been made after that... |

As with some of the others, my passion is the Napoleonic Wars, although I'm more interested in the Naval battles of the era than in the land wars - I'm familiar with the British Pennisula campaign and the 100 days leading to Waterloo, but my knowledge of the rest of the fighting on the European Mainland is more lacking. If only I could find a 40k theme that fitted with the Royal Navy of the period, I'd have a great time modelling an army. For other wars, I find the fighting in Africa during WW2 interesting and my current Ork army is rather Afrika Korp inspired, albeit not much completed yet. |

What I find interesting is that WW@ was no doubt a horrible conflict with the most numbers of people kille din a single war ever; yet compared to the casualty rates of previous conflicts the % of people killed compared to number of combatants is relatively small. Wars like the Seven Years wars (Frederick the Great?) had an outcome of something like 1 in 15 Prussian soldiers injured after 7 years, and 25% causalty rates in a battle when you are the winner! That is ... astounding. Anyway, back on topic. My favorites to learn more about... Land: WWI- The most important event in the 20th century. The death of the old world, and the birth of the modern. 30 Years War- Gustavus Adolphus versus Tilly/Wallenstein. Again, another revolution in warfare. Pelopennessian (sp) War- When Greeks were.. hoplites? Naval: Battle of Tsushima Straits- The East strikes back! War of 1812- Frigate on Frigate action... HOT! U.S. Navy versus The Barbary Pirates- More Age of Sail fun. |

Well my absolute favorite is WWI, pre-American Intervention, when it was crazy bayonet charges into machine guns in brightly colored uniforms. You have got to have some massive brass ones to continue a bayonet charge at a machine gun while your company/regimental leadership sits in the back. But honestly, every war since the time man started hitting each other with sticks has always and will always be my favorite thing to read about and after this semester, do. |

If I remember right, the Spartans only sent 1 guy to defend the city. He was a general that whipped the Syracusian army into shape. However, if my memory serves me,( which it rarely does) the Spartan relief fleet did make a mess of the Athenians in the harbor later on. I could be conflating two entirely different Pelopenessian war scenarios into one, so disregard most of what I say. |

As a war for inspiration, WW2 wins I think for me. I mean it goes to show how resolute the British can be when faced with tyranny such as posed by Germany at the time. We were bombed to hell and back, there was food shortages, there was material shortages, it plunged the country into a financial recession afterwards, and yet our small island nation (and her allies) soundly beat a much larger, and seemingly more powerful enemy. |

Actually...thats right Though the 1 spartan did have a retinue of sorts. Yes...the Athenian fleet held the harbour, then the Spartans came. Though the athenians didn't bother finishing their siege lines - thilly goothes...

I'm fascinated by the late WWII, normandy onwards, especially the monumental undertaking that was D-Day. Also the eastern front such as stalingrad and the whole turn around on that front is fascinating. Also got a keen interest in the Falklands conflict. |
