There's alot of guard players out there frothing and raving like 10 year olds at the minute, and the good old discovery channel got me thinking- which REAL battles and wars inspire you the most? if you're anything like me, any war films, programes, games, books et al, start me tinking along some kind of miniture line. but which ones always stand out for you? Roukes drift? the Somme? the Bulge? Gettesberg?( pardon the speeling :P )

For me its late WW2- the Villers Bocage, the Bulge, the germans getting pushed back but still fighting, the best tanks actulaly fighting-with cool paint jobs, the birth of the assult rifle, camo being used, i could go on, but heres your chance to gush a bit and inspire us all- you never know what some'll paint up

My favourite wars? Star Wars

But seriously I love second world war stuff, especially uniforms and tanks. My favourite nation in that war was the germans and the russians. only based on looks though.

Mostly WW2 for me, especially the eastern front. The scale of it always takes my breath away.

I'm quite fascinated by the American Civil War (the battlefields are well kept and a sight to see) as well as the Napoleonic wars and WWII.

Pretty much all the major fronts of WWII (Africa, Europe, Russia and Pacific) and Vietnam.

I do tend to get influenced by whichever turf I've been most recently watching people fight on in films or in computer games.

WW2 - For the sheer diversity and differences in forces that took part. Compare any aspect, service, or country at the start and then again at the end. Going from Biplanes, on Malta and in Finland, to the jets and rockets of the UK, germany and russia in a mere 6 years is a good example of what I mean.

Falklands Conflict - For showing that invading a sovereign nations land however many thousand miles away does not stop them from coming to claim it back and opening a can of whupass on your doorstep.

Malaysia Conflict - The only time to date a guerilla uprising has successfully been put down. Despite being in the 50's it doesn't seem the lessons learnt by the British at the time have sunk in to modern strategical thinking...

I'm a huge fan of WWII, Vietnam, American Civil War and The American War of Independence. Oddly though if I had to pick one it would be AWI as I am a huge Patriotic fan of American history and there is not better place to begin.

On a personal side, I am mighty in awe of the troops (from all nations) who have fought in Iraq and continue to do so in Afghanistan, the wars themselves may not have been as clear cut as others were in the past, but thats the way modern conflict is.

But to be out there, in the heat, the dust, and also knowing that you maybe shouldn't really be there, but you are anyway is the utmost self sacrifice to do your job.

So props to all soldiers out there.

The ones we have on the tabletop, with a coke in one hand and a sandwich in the other.

Besides that, I guess it's WW2 and the finnish Winter War here. Something about the winter war just really grips me. Really, it's a wonder I've gone this long without starting a finnish force for FoW... :P

And Kayvaan, I agree completely.

The WW1 and WW2 era German forces really capture my imagination. Though they may have fought for a tyrant in the second, and arguably the first one too, they revolutionised tactics and weaponary.
