Hi guys. Now, I really need some help from someone more computer-savvy than me. I'm no noob (or so I keep telling myself), but I have practically no idea about hardware. Here's the story: In december, my laptop broke. My girlfriend and a cup of coffee was involved. Luckily, I was insured. Now the insurance company have finally pulled their heads out of their ***es, and have given me most of the money for a new one. However, I don't really know that much about graphics and processors. I'm looking at two models here: ACER ASPIRE 6530G-704G64MN: AMD Turion X2 dual-core RM-70 4GB DDR2 RAM 640 GB HDD 16" WXGA screen ATi Radeon HD 3650 512 MB dedicated Or this one: ASUS X59SR-AP184C Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 4GB DDR2 RAM 500 GB SATA HDD 15,4" WXGA screen ATi Radeon HD3470 512 MB I basically need to be able to run CoD4/5, fallout 3 and similar games respectably. Now, the upper one is 1000 kroner (~117£) more expensive than the lower one. Is that reasonable? Should I just cave in and by the more expensive one? If any of you guys could give me some advice, I'd be eternally grateful. Help me Ammobunker, you're my only hope! |

I have seen a number of ACER laptops passing my way through work, they seem to be good value for money and RELIABLE, usually its just OS rebuilds/naughty virus relate probs I have to fix. I'm not able to dish out advice on PC gaming though, I work with the things all week so enjoy playing on my PS3/360/Wii on a massive tv, not worrying if the latest game will be choppy with my 3 day old graphics card ![]() If it's any help my oldest is getting an Acer this xmas, she just doesn't know it yet! |

Hi there!Hmm well, most laptops aren't really designed for gaming. And now we're talking about CoD and Fallout 3, who really need high specs iirc? Atm I'm using an Acer laptop as well, something similar to the second one except 2 gigs of RAM instead of 4 gigs and the graphical card ain't that good.Anyway, my laptop doesn't run new games properly. It can perfectly handle Warhammer Online, DoW and some other games. Though, a while ago I purchased Dawn of War II, and it just lags like a mother [well, someone needs a cool off period]er! The only way it can handle it decently is to put everything on low.. which obviously sucks! If you really want a laptop designed for gaming, then I'd suggest you take a look at laptops from MSI. Now, I'm not saying that one of these laptops wouldn't be able to run games like that. It's just my personal experience with a laptop I have for over a year now. Specs really changed in the last year, I can get a laptop twice as good for the price I paid for my current laptop! I'd personally recommend the ASUS laptop (ie. the second one), for two main reasons;
Anyway, I hope this helps you a bit. I'm in no way an expert, but I had spent some time at a computer shop for a school internship. Cheers! |

Hehe, ya they do require pretty high end systems. hehe, or alienware, but they are extremely pricey ![]() Dual core is what the duo means in the core 2 duo name, however with these two processors the intel is roughly twice as powerful on benchmark scores (yes i looked some up for you )As far as the graphics cards go number one is a better deal, but number two has the better processor, which, if this is running vista you'll probably want. the acer also has a larger screen, but to be honest i'd still go with the asus purely for the more powerful processor, smaller screen means lower resolution means less taxing on the graphics card (you probs know that anyway) So of the two i'd go with the ASUS, but if it were my choice i'd get a naff laptop that could run word and not much else, and then have a super powerful desktop for games and high end apps. The reason? When new games come out its far easier to upgrade desktops ![]() Hope that helps though dude! |

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate you taking the time to help a harware-noob. I'm still a bit in doubt, but now it kinda feels like I have at least an inkling of what is going on. So far the Acer still looks like a buy, but solely because I've had one before and I know how to get rid of the annoying acer-ware. And Pfreck, I'm in the middle of a 3 month long environmental project, so I'm more or less brainwashed to care. Dave, I'd love to have a naff laptop and a beastly desktop, but unfortunately I don't have the space and money for that. But yeah, any other situation and I'd do that. Regrettably, I'm unable to pick anything not in the shops own inventory - so no smexy MSI or Alienware for me. Again, thanks! |

Hehe, thanks again for the help guys. Eventually though, I ended up choosing another machine altogether; a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo. But thanks, I really appreciate that you took the time to help a noob out here.
