yeah seconded. I'm a huge dwarf fan but that was dissapointing. And what happened to Kochanski and the RD that was being destroyed? Meh.

Red Dwarf went crap just after season five for me and even watching back I find it ALL terribly dated, not in terms of special effects by the way, more in terms of its writing. That isn't the fault of it's age either in my opinion as older comedies still hold their water when compared to it. I thought I might catch this on the digibox or whatever but peoples reactions to it seem to sum up what I thought it'd be like. I'll spend those precious minutes of life doing something else methinks. ;)

I dunno, I liked season 6 and parts of 7. 8 had a few lol worthy moments but was overall quite bad. The lack of a laugh track just doesn't work, everything is too cgi, etc. Will still watch the other parts to see if it improves any.

Theres only three episodes I suppose. ;)

Horses for courses on where and when the quality of the show dropped off. The only thing there seems to be any consensus on is the fact that it did drop off. For me it went when it started to be about special effects and 'monster of the week' rather than characters. The best episodes for me are pretty much anything from the first two series, then episodes such as 'Marooned'. Episodes like this though are too few and far between.

Hmmmm, wasn't as funny as it could've been and the editing wasn't brilliant. Didn't explain the 9 years later bit or where all the crew went after 8 etc. But that could cos it's a 3 parter. Hope things improve though!

pretty much like everybopdy else, i have to say that i was dissapointed with the show, also i really noticed how much older thay all look. and the plot was pretty weak, i mean where did the random secoond hologram come from? anyhow will still watch the rest tonight and tomorrow, and i will definetly watch some of the best episodes after it.

Well, guess I'm with Jase on this one. Really did enjoy it, I'll admit the loss of the laugh track did niggle; but didn't ruin it as much for me as it did Blackadder: Back and Forth. And Cat's dialogue in his first scenes was fantastic. Reminded me of myself in more vain moments... :P

I enjoyed it. The random popping up of the second hologram was badly done, but I didn't even notice that there wasn't a laughter track, and kinda liked that they went "well, the actors look an awful lot older and more grizzled, how do we deal with that?" and started it 9 years later.

It wasn't the best thing since sliced bread, but I don't think they've crapped on the legacy yet.

they may not have crappeed on the legacy yet but we'll have to see tonight if it does.

Saying it's nine years later is fair enough but Rimmer is supposed to be ageless! The other hologram is Sophie Winkleman I think...Mmmm Sophie.

well, in my half dazed stupor after a 10 hour night shift i thought it was quite good for a naylor solo. i'm of the opinion that he was the weaker of the two writers and the previous final series showed this in buckets. krytie TV being the only good single episode of the series (which was co-written).

i think the 2nd hologram will all become clear. i liked how the characters retained the attributes of nine years ago, they certainly haven't forgotten to act the part. the saddest part is how aged Chris Barrie looks :( he was excellent in the brittas empire as well!

Warhammer got a mention :D
Part 2 was outstanding! B)
Very pleased after the disappointing first part. Now eagerly awaiting part 3.

Yes, Warhammer got a mention and my mates all said "Ah [Not on the floor please]" as one.
Then I calmed them, because any decent bloke refers to the hobby as "40K" (unless you actually play Warhammer Fantasy of course...in which case you ARE sad :P )

I have two problems with it:

1. The Story.

2. It isn't funny.

Daft and stupid story really poorly written. Red Dwarf was never as good after Grant/Naylor split.

Now I don't mind subtle pastiche or a nod to another film/tv show etc but the whole in your face Bladerunner thing was really poorly done and more than anything else completely out of place. What has Bladerunner and Red Dwarf have in common other than the loose link of both being Sci-fi?

I thought the lack of laughter was due to them not filming it in front of a live audience, but actually I think it may have been, it is just no one was laughing.

That's the problem with red dwarf though. You watch the first two series and it's the same as any other good situation comedy. A set of incompatible characters who loathe each other but are stuck together. At it's base that isn't so different to say steptoe and son or fawlty towers. The gags weren't scifi related, they were normal gags that just happened to take place in a scifi setting. Early episodes had premises like rimmer revising or lister feeling lonely, later ones (as rictus said) were pointless and unsubtle pastiches of films like alien (polymorph) and tv shows like star trek (cowboy worlds and the like).

Red Dwarfs enemy in my opinion was it's own success. As it got more money then the writers lost the restrictions that made the show so tight in the first place. I think it's sad ultimately that they have brought it back whilst making no attempt at all to drag it into the 21st century. Same old sets, same old costumes, same old gags and same old 90s cgi. I mean, the cgi red dwarf got at the end of it's run was bad but nowadays it looks simply dreadful.
