Update time:

Well ive decided i really want to go for it. The plan is to join the engineers as either a driver or as a radio operator, taking the English GCSE and then training as an electrician.

Just have the problem of finding somewhere to stay while they process my application (which could take around 3 months) and unfortunately all my family over there have full houses :( Just comes as a bit of a blow hearing that, after ive got all excited/psyched up about the idea, been doing lots of training etc.

Have also recently been informed that i'm losing my job and getting kicked out the house around mid august as well :(

Bro, don't join armor or engineers. Join the Infantry. You get a nice blue cord (or british equivalent) and spend your enitre contract walking everywhere with heavy weight on your back. :D

Sorry to hear that mate, can the Army not put you up somewhere til they get your app sorted? No friends you can call on?

I wish you the best of luck mate.

Well it's good that you know what you want at least. Losing your job and getting kicked out sucks, but maybe if you could find somewhere over here to stay by August, then that would work out quite well?

Joining over there. But i'm sure i read on the website that you have to be able to support yourself while they consider the application.

Ive had one friend offer me a room near Southampton, but that won't be until january.

As I said on facebook there is a chance of a room in Glasgow (as we may have one spare) but obviously money and stuff would need to change hands a lot :P

I'll catch you on msn about it next week, there is a party to be had!

Dave out.

You may have to wait longer than 3 months, because thats just the interview/appraisal stage. After that you can end up waiting up to 6 months to be called forward for training.

Should have joined the REME!

I gave them another call today, and they said 3-4 months because of security checks as i'm living outside the UK. Unfortunately the only job in the engineers that i can do (and would like to do) is Driver. Also concerning the living over there while they consider me, from what he said it sounds like they have to meet me in person and then they might be able to sort something out.

So i might come over for a week or 2 this summer, see the family etc and take a visit to the recruiting office.

I've no idea if it's at all comparable with the Army, but a mate of mine recently joined the Navy and had to wait aaaages between passing all the test and being called up for his training.

Dont get too hung up about what job you are going for. Once in, oportunity is there to follow the career stream that you want. Remember that the recruiting offices have some quotas that they want to fill and unless you are dealling with one of her majesty's engineers they're just looking at paperwork to guide you by. So make sure you go engineer, ignore the ramblings of the 'grunt' marshal crusader (no offence). Having done infantry and engineer, trust me you want the latter. (unless you want to be a shopping center security guard when you come out).
Be positive and assertive (without being arrogant) basically show them that you have thought it all through and know what you are doing, you have a 'life plan'.

Good luck and hopefully welcome to the Corps. probably the finest part of the british armed forces!

GAH! I resemble that remark! ;)

Just something romantic about Infantry I guess. Anyone read Once an Eagle, by Anton Meyer? That book really sealed the deal for me. It could require me to sit through literal [Not on the floor please] storms and I still would want to do it.
