GW only became a PLC to afford the rights to lord of the rings, which has arguably cost them more than it's made (and continues to have an effect today in the greater scale of advertising and price rising.) GW were at a steady level until the Lord of the rings films and the daegostini part mag which gave GW a huge amount of advertising but only provided a fad market. consequently profit and stock prices went up for the duration of the films and part magazine. the boom from the lord of the rings rapidly declined upon the cessation of both the films and the magazine and once again, shares and profit margin went down (although arguably only back to natural levels pre-LoTR fad). if GW had never become a PLC i highly doubt we'd be seeing the price rises we have for the last 3/4 years (one every year in that time), i'm not denying prices wouldn't have risen, but had it not been a PLC those prices would have only been in conjunction with material costs. not investors wanting more profit. anyway, i'll say nothing more on it. there's not much else to be said. website loads fine for me and scrapping the bits service made a lot of fiscal sense (much more so than un-necessary price rises driving away people who can already only just about afford the hobby) Edited by vincent1989, 7 Apr 2009, 03:45 PM.

A few responses to the points, I know its getting off track, but I don't like to see GW being blamed for some corporate money grabbing culture without the true facts being under discussion. Firstly, check the accounts published. They have been losing money. They have been making cutbacks and restructuring. They have been in decline for several years, partly off the high of the LotR boom, but partly due to bloated structure. Things are turning around, but they have not been doing well recently. Secondly, the financial statements also make mention that the costs of materials make up only something like 5% of the product price (see directors report on principle risks), the rest of the expenditure is stores, staff, advertising, development, etc. For example it cost them £1m to develop the new Rhino kit a few years back, it was a big investment (read something like 10% of their entire profit that year). So the cost of oil (for plastic) and of metal, isn't the factor for pricing, its people cost and sales costs. And finally, Games Workshop has been a public listed company since 1994 with public shareholdings since that time - their financing arrangements have not changed since that time and this was around a decade before Lord of the Rings. In addition most of the shareholders currently are pension funds and other investors looking for long term results and whom have not been receiving significant dividends (or in 2008 any at all) so therefore GW have not been pulling money out of the business. Yes, increased prices hurt, are they a result of GW milking the customer base, no. *climbs off soapbox* |

Was in my local store again today and they were undercoating their new guard. In case anyone else was interested, the new commissar lord comes as a complete body with just separate arms. Puts the brakes on my plan to turn him into an inquisitor with a head swap as its joined not only to the body but also to the cloak at the back |

Well, back to guard ^^ the new codex is superb, however Iron Hand Straken is a bit of a hard-ass. And insane. Nto even a Space Marine can strike as a MC n Close Combat. Anyway - got my new list written up - 2000 pints worht of sheer ungodliness. 2 LR, 1 Vanquisher, 2 Chimeras with Stormtroopers (10 in each) A commi lord, Company Command squad and 2 platoons, 1 with 3 squads, 1 with 4. Oh, and 3 support squads. 129 models. Oh lordy! |

Have to say I was impressed by the Valkyrie kit, its a nice size, and almost seems realisitically scaled with the men its supposed to carry. Just. lol. And the sliding side doors are just cool. If I was to start IG, I would def have Vultures with underslung Punisher cannons, 4ok version of the A10 Warthog if I ever saw one! |

Its...basically, tis using the points listed on Warseer - having seen a store Codex, they're all correct, I think. And upgrades are just some educated guesses. Lots of things got expensive

Hmm, with all the new rules and cool releases for Guard, its just as well I prefer evil armies. ... ...Oh wait...
You really can't leave this damn hobby, can you? Anyone got any idea how long it takes FW to ship things out? Oh, and as a side note, anyone looking to buy the 20 cadian box before it gets replaced, or anything warhammer really, check this site out, I know a couple of people mentionned it before, but if memory serves were unsure how reliable they were. Having gotten my order from them in about 2 days, and even with shipping being a fair bit cheaper than in store prices, i'd say they're definetly worth having a look through. |

Honestly Dean, I'm unsure. I was quite happy with the original spread of varients and it now looks as though GW have exploited the notion of "the Galaxy is a big place and everything has been tried at least once" and are trying to fill every concievable niche in the list which, while pruducing cool models, is slowly eroding the need for tactical though. After all, why struggle against a marine army using a grunt gunline and some cunning thinking when one simply has to take a bucket load of the appropriate vehicles and sit back. Dave out. |

Vanquisher can indeed only fire AT shells, but meh, they did drop points quite a bit, and no tank is going to survive against them for long. Tepok |
