Having emailed igknot and Alhazrad for a quiet game at my house and they both got right back to me that there was a 1k tournament focused for new persons to the hobby at the store where igknot regularly stops. Hmm… 1k…. I can do that in Eldar… So we showed up, igknot with his Dark Eldar and Alhazrad had his Daemons. There were spots for 24 players so they stopped taking entrants at 26 and pulled in a customers brand new freshly painted GW battlefield. So out of said 26 gamers the majority were orks with not less than 8 players…. The bandwagon is definitely green…. Knowing that it isn’t a surprise that I pulled an Ork Kult of Speed for my first opponent My list: Avatar Magun Ra 9 Banshees w/exarch 10 Guardians with brightlance and warlock (conceal) 10 Guardians with scatterlaser and warlock (conceal) 4 Dark Reapers with exarch His list was Wazzdakka Gutsmek 9 bikes with TL big shootas 12 shootaboys with Nob & truck 12 shootaboys with Nob & truck 19 shootaboys with Nob & FW Battlewagon (opentopped with 2 Heavy stubbers) first scenario was “Seize ground” with Dawn of War deployment. Rolled 4 objectives. Didn’t get a picture of my setup.. Lost the roll and had to go first, he started with all his units off the table so I just moved one of my guardian units in front of the other. Completely misunderstood that the rest of my units could come on first turn… Resulting in me looking down the barrels of all his guns when he rolled on.   The ork bikes completely wiped out the guardian unit in front…  So I brought everything else on and rolled miserably for my run rolls. 1 on the banshees and a 3 on Magun ra…   His turn 2 he unloaded one of the trucks and popped off at the avatar (take 3 wounds off of him…) with the shoota boys then didn’t charge with them. He finished gunning down the guardians with the bikes, moved his boss right in front of the Dark reapers (around 6”) and ended his turn.  I then completely wiffed the rules for the reapers and shot 4 S8 shots at the boss and killed him dead…. However reaper launchers are S5 heavy 2…. Yep tourneys are the best places to learn how to play your army…. [no pic ]and now I roll good on my run rolls and got a 6 on Magun and a 5 on the banshees who both now fist the truckboy squad down to 4 boyz they fail Ld, bosspole and run anyway and massacre… sweet…  His turn 3 he guns down the banshees with the bikers and unloads the other truckboyz and misses and charges Magun ra… the battlewagon boys then dismount and shoot/charge at the Reapers, Its looking really good now    Magun Ra takes 3 orks with him but the Pclaw boss snicks him and that’s that… the reapers don’t do much and are massacred also so that left me with the Avatar with 1 wound left….  I concede and score 2 points for loosing and 1 point for killing his HQ and I gave away 13 points… Gah!!!... Wonderful start with a new army…. 2nd round tomorrow…. Where the 10y/o ginge kid does the same thing to me with necrons….. Edited by dean, 30 Jan 2009, 03:43 PM.

Three games in 6 hours… A ton of new acquaintances… feeling my frontal lobes stuffed with cotton at the end… Yep. Huge fun. I knew my first few games with Eldar were going to be rough cause it’s a totally different playstyle. Round Two…. I had noticed a young boy somewhere between 10-14 years old playing but didn’t expect to face him… So naturally I wound up on the new GW battlefield facing a kid… However the kid had a very nicely painted ‘cron army with some of GW’s suggested fish plants for base decoration… (and he knew his army very well) Mission two was a Capture and Control with a spearhead deployment… Setup looked like this. Oh.. I remembered to change my white balance to flourecent from the first game to this one..  He won the first turn and turbo boosted his wraiths close to my line and all of his shooting was ineffective this turn…  I ran the chicks forward with the avatar and made an assault move on the first turn… (sweet). My shooting consisted of blasting the Wraiths back to their tombs and putting one wound on the scarab swarm…. (yay)  Assault went well as I killed 2 scarab bases and between his turn and mine 10 warriors while his lord took 3 of the chicks… Unfortunately all but 3 of the warriors stood back up. (grumble)   Then he thought it would be fun to DS a quartet of flayed ones behind me. He almost landed them off the board and then got a good run roll and was in charge range of the objective and my left guardian squad. And somewhere in here he headshot Magun Ra with the destroyer…   No problem, I can shoot them down right… Heh… nope… Said guardian squad lost combat, lost morale and were caught and minced… Oh… gonna be one of those days… OKAY… The other squad of Guardians headshot the Destroyer back and got a bit of vindication…  Meanwhile the war of attrition in the center continued with the girls killing another 10 or so warriors with all but three standing up AGAIN!... Eventually the Avatar stood alone… and the Necron lord ripped out his spleen with his warscythe….. Grumble… Wish I had brought my Termies….  At the end of that combat I really just had one Guardian squad left and I conceded (there was only 5 minutes left anyway…) Nother loss, this time only scored 2 Sigh… By this time my camera was running down and so was I but my last game of the day was against new SM with 2 squads of Sternguard. That game ended in a draw but I edged him 13 to 12. The marine player did several things I wouldn’t have done that could have had him winning that game too… I really need to learn to play Elves…. Its a really good board for maybe $100. $300 is a titan.... Not worth a titan.... Dont get me wrong it is very pretty and the owner had done an excellent job on it but I think there are better places to put that much money.
And maybe that point of view is why Wolvie is bemoaning the fact that there arent more Elves around here.....

good work dean, playing against an army is always interesting for the first time, but getting used to playing a new race is a real tricky one. Im only really just beginning to see the light with my tau lol! |

i know what it feels like to be trounced for the 1st 2 games you play (my first couple of games with Vampire Counts). last week 2K vs Chaos. massacre but made the lord on dragon run away. this week 2K vs Dark Elves. massacre but wounded the hydra  next week 1.5k vs other chaos. not expecting much, to be honest. nice reports, with plenty of pictures. |

It WAS a tourny and WASN'T expecting to win all my games but I didnt expect to die to the last man either.....  New armies are fun!....Edit: Yay! Found the "Eternal Warrior" special rule... sigh... Maybe Magun Ra isnt that bad after all.... Just me... Edited by dean, 30 Jan 2009, 08:44 PM.
