Should be interesting. I've been a life long fan of the show and yet have hated the majority of the output from Series 4 and the last two Christams specials. Hopefully a new producer and a new lead will bring the show a new lease of life. |

Current favourites look to be Patterson Joseph or Chiwetel Eijofor. Both are great, but I'd love it to be Joseph after Neverwhere. Not convinced we'll get many old villains. Moffat's said that he believes Doctor Who thrives on making new villains. |

Either of those would rock, and I too would prefer it to be Joseph, since I loved his Marquis de Carabas in 'Neverwhere'. Im just glad to see the end of Russell T "everything has to be about gay" Davies; he deserves credit for getting the Dr. Who name resurrected, but lately it had come to feel less like resurrection and more like necrophilia. |

Having rewatched a lot of old Who alongside Nu Who the difference in quality is amazing. Old stories dragged. As has been pointed out what was maybe episodes 1 and 2 in old stories is now the pre title sequence. A lot of what I love about Who comes from the Virgin novels which is why I'm happy to see more of those writers crossing over to write the show. RTD has delivered a great series. Where he's fallen down is that he's not had enough people watching what he did. He's needed a stronger hand on his work, to keep him strengthening his own scripts and to keep him to deadlines or be prepared to hand over more work to other people. But when he's good he's brilliant. I'm just hoping with less to do on Who this year for him that RTD can turn in some fantastic specials that have had time to be written, rewritten, thought through and turned into some fantastic send offs for him and for possibly the best Doctor of all time. Moffat's not always going to turn out fantastic stuff, but he's a brilliant writer (sat here watching the Library two parter) and he's run and written two of my favourite shows of all time. |

They've not announced the name yet. I know who it is based on the information they've given so far. Man Youngest doctor ever. 26 years old. His name's been on some lists - pretty much unknown. Not Patterson or Chewy though

how do you effectively convey someone rolling around on the floor with a confused look brought on by uproarious and yet at the same time very painful laughter whilst at the same time trying your best not to soil yourself?!? Well at least this time the BBC will well and truly bury this like they should have done the last time round |

Yeah because last time it was the most popular brand the BBC had. Oh wait it wasn't. I'd rather have crap Doctor Who with at least an element of imagination than all the soaps on tv. |

Usually it's better than Stargate, Smallville, X Files, Primeval, Blakes Seven, Survivors, Buffy at its nadir (or most of season 6 as we like to call it). Not as good as Battlestar, Millenium, Angel, Buffy at its peak. Who can deliver genius episodes like most ones written by Steven Moffat or Paul Cornell. So no I disagree pretty strongly. It did reinvention and then everyone started jumping on the bandwagon. The Prisoner will be rubbish because they'll need to give it an answer and the reason it has a cache now was because there were no answers and it had style. Edited by Keravin, 3 Jan 2009, 08:06 PM.

Well, the Cybermen had a two year gap between this last Christmas Special and series 2 but I take your point. I don't mind returning villains TBH but the Daleks have come back so many times since the revival of the show in 2005 that their threat has been drastically diminished, which is a shame considering the effort they initially went to to make them (succesfully) scary and iconic again. And the 11th Doctor is... Matt Smith. Well, at least they have cast an actor as opposed to a stand up comedian/woman. I was afraid we were going to get some kind of 'stunt' casting style affair. Keravin: Kudos to you for even knowing about the Virgin novels. I have long been a fan and own the entire set. Old Guard: If the BBC had left it buried then they wouldn't be making the phenominal amount of money from it that they are right now. Also deciding that the casting of a new chap will 'bury' the show before you have even seen one second of footage of him in the part is judgmental and to be quite honest, completely ignorant As for English Eurovision entry...well horses for courses. I personally find the likes of BSG and SG1 to be so turgid. The American Military in space. So what? I think, if anything, then a lot of people want Dr Who to be serious and grim, whilst forgetting that it's about an alien who travels in time and space in a phone box. Whilst Dr Who can be dark (whatever that means) it is primarily a show for children. Perhaps you are just incapable of enjoying the show for what it is? Edited by The Antipope, 3 Jan 2009, 08:50 PM.

Please! It didnt reinvent itself. It was dug up, dusted off, sold on a wave of sentimentality and look what we can do with the technollogy now. It's weak. And despite the fact that at a particular time I enjoyed it (Pertwee/Baker era) even then as I grew up it was still not measuring up to other stuff out there. Trek, The Invaders (greatly underated and something at a guess most of you will know little about) Dont care but I loved and still fondly remeber (and Catch the odd repeat ) Space 1999. The reason something like Galactica works is that they've taken the time with the overall plot over the series and have a definite end right from the get go. Tthey have used high tec effects yes, but in a subtle way ( hordes of flying Daleks WTF?? if ever someone needed a drug test it was whoever came up with that idea ) the original was an absolute cheese fest, it makes me cringe when I see old episodes of it now, but they have made the whole concept cool, I sat in awe at the first couple of episodes. Who on the other hand was cool and now has more chese dripping of it than a freshly cooked sausage and egg Mc Muffin. I can still picture now (my enduring memory of Who) marines running up the beach from a hovercraft taking on these walking fish things (sorry cant remember what they called them though). that was cool! Now its a case of oh dear lord what the hell is that supposed to be? Its not even a cases that brits cant do good scifi cos' we can the prisoner being a good example some of the Quatermass mini series, Hell even Space 1999 (series one, two was a little too out there for my taste). But I'm sorry and you may dissagree stongly all you wish thats your opinion and this is mine, for me It's had its day and in bringing it back not enough effort was put into turning it into something special (and it could have been). I aggre with you on the Prisoner. They will have to do something exceptional (IE weirder than Lost ....is that possible?) in order for people to accept is as 'new' and without constantly looking back. Ultimately everything has a life span, I dissagree with your Stagate comment (made only because Who's producer said so) but yes even that must come to an end. Everything goes off the boil. Some can survive a few years gap before coming back IE next generation but even then in the hands of the greedy (did we really need DS9?) it can go off track. I really liked Entreprise for example, but the mistake there was going back in time rather than forward (scifi fans for all their open minds cant tolerate some time twists ....in fact time travel in most scifi normally sounds the death nell as it is a sure sign of 'hang on we've run out of ideas) Damn I miss Jolene blalock. Who has, in my opinion (and I'm 100% certain I am not alone in this thinking) has had, no, had had its day, to be fair Tennant as an actor and as a doctor...not bad (shame about what he's had to work with though). So why not go out on a 'high'? and let it go Antipope: you may have hit the nail on the head in more ways than one, kids love it ergo the vast sums of money it has raised (no denying that, some fantastic marketing has taken place) As for being judgemental? yep I'll take that accusation. Unfortunately I have a track record of being able to make snap judgements on people which are very seldom wrong and give me great pleasure when they are. So while I may be wrong (and in the eyes of those people who will enjoy his work, for there will without doubt be some/many? who knows? they will say that I am). I believe that unless there is a significant change then this is going to be a stale regurgitation of what has come already. Edited by Old Guard, 3 Jan 2009, 09:19 PM.

Fair enough I suppose. Personally if I see a thread about something, I don't tend to pop in and casually slag it off is all. A great deal of people like it and watch it (14 million over Christmas, with an appreciation index of 86% positive) and I just find it a little churlish. It's like deliberately going to a party that's being held for someone I don't like, just so I can spoil it. You don't like Doctor Who just like many others and I find that fair enough. However, many others do and frankly, I don't believe that the programme could have survived in one form or another for almost half a century if it is as bad as you suggest. Why not just let people enjoy it rather than pointlessly pour poison on it? |

Saw the Invaders and hated it. Much like the Incredible Hulk with its moving protagonist and refusal to ever move the story on because it needed to maintain a status quo. Yes I got all the paranoia, but it was a single concept that kept being done episode after episode. Stargate is watchable, but has NEVER produced an episode that touched me emotionally. I enjoy watching the show and I'll see Seasons 9 and 10 when I get them off my brother, but it was safe tv. BSG is not safe, but it has had to fight to be allowed to finish its story and thankfully it will be allowed to. Star Trek in all forms except DS9 was exceptionally safe. Enterprise had promise then did nothing with it. The fact you didn't like DS9 says to me that we have completely different ideas of what we want from Sci Fi. DS9 was the Star Trek with real people in it - where else could you get episodes focused on the tailor who was just a tailor. Doctor Who is different things to different people and unlike most sci fi shows has been allowed to be different things at different times. The old Who was junky and suffers from a lack of energy because they had the budget that meant they needed to use those same sets and costumes for 6 episodes and that's why they had dodgy sets and monsters. However you don't judge BSG on what the 70s show was like so why do it with Who? Who had the most fascinating set of novels that took the series into new areas that the budget and tv sensibilities would not have allowed it to. Some of that has rubbed off on the new show which isn't surprising because writers came across (indeed RTD ended up in charge) from the novels and even one of the best stories ever got remade for tv (Human Nature). The ratings say completely differently to what you're saying. It is one of the most watched programmes on tv, it kick soap operas' butts and unlike soap operas is a sellable brand to the rest of the world. It's here to stay. And for many people it's not judged on what the show was, but what it is now. I do have to agree with Antipope that just going into a thread to post something is [Not on the floor please] would be considered trolling in many places. Then again I try and say positive things on the threads I post in here. Edited by Keravin, 3 Jan 2009, 09:35 PM.
