Thick as a Brick

Well, having started a chaos army I have promptly lost any motivation to continue it and have decided to start yet another random army: Brettonians, for some strange reason. I'm getting around having to paint hundreds of different colour schemes by theming them as a monastic crusading order of some kind. I'll try and expand on this as ideas hit me. And here is the test model; strangely for my pictures this one makes the model look half decent... He still needs basing, and some bits need neatening up, the freehand for one, although I could just leave that and put him in the centre of the unit: ![]() ![]() Hopefully this one will be updated a bit more frequently than the Chaos log ![]() Thanks for looking! |

you'll be back to chaos eventually (they have cookies )i like that knights colour scheme. if you ever get stuck for colour schemes, just go to a sports shop website and look at all the different colours of football shirts. this is also a handy way of naming knights. "well, this one is Sir Inter Milan of the Knights of the Realm, whilst this one is..." |

Thanks guys ![]() @Dacone: interestingly, the new chaos knights were one of the reasons I changed armies... @Brambleten: For the alternative colour schemes on the knights penitent below I've mostly been taking colour schemes from the 'Eavy metal knights and dirtying them up with liberal application of devlan mud, and brown mixed into the colours.. And lo, the time came to pass when Arhalien would actually update his log... Apologies for the long delay between updates: I haven't really found time to paint because of a combination of schoolwork and Left4Dead, but I have been doing some stuff. I fear the picture quality is it's usual inconsistent self, partly because the camera settings reset, and I can't remember what I had them on before, and partly because my desk (never easy to take photos on), is now mostly taken up by a 19" monitor. Ahh well, onto the pics: Knights of the Realm: not totally finished yet: I still need to do the shield emblems (probably Black Templar crosses, if I can get enough transfers) and the bases, which are a problem for me. I was planning to do them as muddy bases, which leaves me with the question of how much mud to place on the trailing edges of the barding, and if I do, how would I do that mud. ![]() ![]() And then onto the Knights penitent, where the pictures go down the toilet. A little bit of fluff first: this army is based around a monastic knightly order (imagine one of the medieval european crusading orders), launching a crusade for the grail (I may flesh it out at some point). While the majority of the army is made up of members of the order itself (eg, the KotR above), various other knights have been drawn to their banner. The knights penitent (errant knights), are a collection of wanderers, outcasts and a few order knights seeking redemption for past sins, drawn together to seek wealth, forgiveness, or just a bloody good scrap. They are all very battered and battleworn, representing a long time spent in the wilderness, and they will all bear the haved blue and black of the order on their shields and barding to tie them in. They are all still WIP to some degree or other: (the two nearest to being finished) ![]() ![]() And two members of the order: I'm unsure whether to leave the barding as the rather dirty sackcloth it's supposed to be now, or to repaint it in the colours of the KotR above: any thoughts on this? ![]() As I said above: pictures, down toilet... C+C very welcome please Thanks for looking |

Looking good mate, I like the colour scheme, and the execution is superb. I'd like to suggest trying to paint on the heraldry though, don't use shiny transfers! Templar crosses are pretty easy to paint, just start with a stretched out X horizontally, then paint a stretched out X vertically, and then just fill in the spaces a bit and voila. You can practice a bit on some paper or an empty base before doing it on a mini. Can't help you out with the mud but there's plenty of experts on that on here. I really like the penitent knights idea, I'd say keep the barding as is, it sets them apart nicely. |

Thanks guys ![]() And this is why I was initially planning to use transfers: ![]() I dread having to do that on the men at arms.... Any c+c would be appreciated, although I realise this update doesn't really deserve that much attention: there'll be better updates soon, I promise! ![]() Thanks |

Nice looking unit. I used to have an all cavalry Brettonian army. Never lost with it as I always managed to get the charges in first, and not much can withstand that. Will this be all cavalry or will you be adding infantry and peasants? |

Nice unit, very well painted in a tricky colour scheme. Gels together very well. You wouldn't get me doing all that freehand. |

Dude, that's a fantastic looking block of cavalry! You can always revisit the black crosses - wouldn't it be easier to sketch them out first with a light leaded pencil, I'm thinking HB here, and then paint it in? The black should cover up any pencil marks.

Thanks guys ![]() @Rictus: Nahh, it'll be a mixed army (that is, if uni this autumn doesn't stop any large-scale army building): mostly cavalry with a solid firebase of a trebuchet, some archers, held together by a m@a block with a virtue of empathy paladin (the chapter's sergeant at arms) @xbanditsx: I agree: fantasy with its elves, swords, magic and tanks will always be far superior to 40k with its elves, swords, magic and... err... tanks. Hmmm... @Bodhi: Hmm, I may do, but as they're painted over white, it'll be tricky. I like the suggestion of outlining them in pencil first: I'll definately try that on the M@A: thanks |

Arhalien, the chaos knights made you change to brettonians? Theres some stuff you can get that gets rid of the whole shiny transfer thing. I think useing them would really help you. I think it's called micro-set and micro-sol. Have a little research to double check though. |

EPIC THREADNOMANCY!!1 Erm.... yeah... Basically, my excuse for my long absence is that I sort of stopped all forum browsing during my exams and the run up to them in May, and since then I just haven't got around to coming back here... I'm slightly worried I'm going to be a bit (ok, very) out of touch, but oh well... This project has moved on quite a bit since the last update actually, but a few replies to unanswered posts first (sorry for taking so long!) @dacone2: erm... yeah: as mad as it may sound, i really don't like some of the design decisions made with the new Chaos models. I personally think that both the knights and chosen look overly cluttered, and, to be honest, a bit ridiculous. Had they just remade the previous metal chaos knights in plastic in the sort of detail that the new ones have, then I get the feeling I'd still be doing the army! @Lt.Gregor: Well, the plan is to do a bit of a mix: all the soldiers of the order (KotR, M@A, characters, pegasus knights) will be painted in that scheme, whilst other units will be a bit of a mix: the questing knights for example, will contain both knights painted in the heraldry of the knightly order, whilst there will be others in their own heraldry who have joined the crusade. I may do the same with Grail knights if I ever get any, or I may just have them in blue and black. @Doghouse+Deserter: thanks guys! Anyway, onto the progress: The first thing I finished was the unit of Knights errant (yay! bad pics!): ![]() ![]() (the explanation for the wierd colour scheme is above) I then painted up a unit of M@A (very, very quickly in the period of about 10 days I had between my penultimate exam and my last exam...) ![]() This unit will probably be expanded with a unit filler when I get more models with which to do it (ie, when I get some archers) edit: a WIP shot to show another angle of it (all that isn;t done are the shields) ![]() And finally, I painted up a lord for the army. I probably should have done a BSB, but I love this model, and really enjoyed painting him, although I don't think the pictures really do it justice: ![]() ![]() Anyway, hopefully there'll be a bit more progress in this log at some point soon. Thanks for looking! Edited by Arhalien, 10 Aug 2009, 02:59 AM.
