Entertainment officer...Meet the gang cos the boys are here.....
Eisenhorn and ravenor sheer quality, i will probably have to replace my eisenhorn trilogy at some point as it is looking a little worse for wear (i have reread it ...lots) I think the ravenors are coming out in a 3 part omnibus (probably with some little extras in there too) and I believe i heard a rummour that there will be more ravenor! OG is happy!!!!

I must have 95% of the 40k books that BL have published and Abnett stands above most of the other authors. I like the old space wolf books and some of the ultrasmurf ones too. The Heresy books have been a bit mixed, mostly at least interesting but Abyss was poor, Legion was interesting tho.

Titanicus is on the way from Amazon, hope it arrives today! Had aleady got it on order before I went to games day so the wait has saved me £8 but its been painful!

If you enjoyed Titanicus, then I'd suggest Mechanicus Jase, in my opinion; it's a vastly superior novel. The Titan battles are fantastic to read; quite a lot of variety in them, skirmishes, one-on-one duels and massed assaults. And the charge of the Knights of Taranis would be the highlight of any book.

Frankly a strong contender for best Horus Heresy novel so far.

Well, theres a few more sample extracts available on the Black Library site. My favourite is Blood Pact, but also Shamanslayer and Iron Company. Have to say picked up Reiksguard randomly and was a very good read, just kept on growing on me

I enjoyed mechanicum and titanicus a fair bit, but nothing surpasses double eagle for me. I'm in the process of reading it for the 4th time (Will probably post some flyer notes in the reference thread). It still just doesn't get old! :D

I'm looking forward to blood pact though, Abnett always manages to leave me eagerly waiting for more.

Go post in someone's topic that you normally wouldn't
Because I'm behind on Gaunts I was going to buy a stack, but I've now found the new compliation is out in April 2010 so I'll wait to get all the ones I'm missing altogether.

Well, there is new information up for the book coming in the latter part of NEXT year. The next heresy book after the Wolves vs Sons pair is called Nemesis, which the manager of my local store couldn't wait to rave about having seen the cover of. Nothing is mentioned on the website beyond the title, but the cover reportedly features an assassin, so expect to see Mr Kurze appearing there. A new heresy audiobook has crept into the mix for next february, but I am a little wary of these so far- thought that Heart of Rage was frankly pish. Some other mixed appearances, some new 40k pieces including Enforcer by Matthew Farrer which I hope will continue with the Calpurnia/Arbites series. There is also a new spin-off series from the Gotrek and Felix novels based on Ulrika the Vampire. Looks interesting

that sounds good, but it also means that its unlikely to see her in any more Gotrek and Felix

Awesome, I've been waiting and wondering for ages when the next compilation is coming out. Was tempted the other day to buy the next 4 books off of amazon but now you've said that I'm gonna wait til april. Cheers for that Keravin.

I'm sure I heard he was done with Ravenor but an Alizebeth Bequin trilogy was in the works? either way, it's a good thing. I love Ravenor maybe even more than Eisenhorn and I love Eisenhorn a lot.

Ravenor for me is better, but the ending is weak. i think its better because it isnt just focused on one guy, the band is a more integral part than it seems to be in Eisenhorn

Ravenor for me is better, but the ending is weak.
That's an often heard criticism of Abnett's work, and I think that it holds up for most of his books - although for most of his books they are part of an ongoing series. Having said that, I loved the ending of 'Necropolis' (which just so happens to be my favourite 40k novel), it is quite profound and surprisingly moving, something that other 40k fiction hasn't acheived.

I've not read Ravenor, but the Eisenhorn trilogy is great, espectially the first and second which I fell have controbuted huge amounts to the 40k background (take the portrayal of the Cadian Kasrkin in 'Malleus', arguably we wouldn't have had the last two Guard codexes without that). I may well check that out, and Titanicus, as a massive addict to EPIC (the game and the models) I feel I should check that out!

Other than that, I'm a bit bored of 40k fiction of late, it is getting a bit formulaic. I think this criticism is true especially of the Horus Heresy series, which has really disappointed me - the first two books were excellent, the third not bad (though I think it was a mistake to kill off certain characters), but after that they've settled in to too much of a generic plot structure:

- Marine Legion fight and defeat Uber-hard aliens. Meanwhile, Primarch and/or individual Marines are getting conflicted about lodges/loyalties etc.
- Legion is sent to another warzone. Internal conflicts deepen.
- After warzone is contested, conflicts are sparked by conspiracy/magguffin/convenient plot device.

Now wash, rinse, and repeat across 30 or so books until the series is finished... :ermm: I only got a quarter of the way through 'Fulgrim' because it was adhering to this same pattern that was already becoming apparent with the previous two books, and I could see exactly where it was going. Very, very disappointing, especially as I enjoyed McNeil's Ultramarines books so I know he can do better.

So, although I've got several 40k novels I've yet to read, I've not felt any urge to do so. I've been more interested in reading other Sci-fi stuff (so many classic works and authors I need to check out), and I've discovered Cormac McCarthy's work (like 'The Road' and 'Blood Meridian') - not always an easy read, and sometimes disturbing, but challenging, though provoking work that is beautifully written.

God your right firestorm, I'm fed up of the HH books. The first two as you say were nice, I don't mind Fulgrim and Mechanicus was good but mostly I find them very predictable. And I'm bloody bored of Caliban. I can't believe there is going to be a third book about all that crap.

They've already done a brilliant book about the fall of the Dark Angels, it's called 'Angels of Darkness', why do they need to write half a dozen more books about it?

...apart from the fact they'll sell by the bucket load to Dork Angles players, of course :P :D
