I promised quite awhile ago that I would start up a new project log because I hated the stuff in the beginning of my old one here. Then I stopped painting... just didn't have it in me for some reason. New job hasn't helped much, been pretty draining. But I've gotten some painting done of late and just finished extensively re-organizing my Photobucket, so I figure now would be a good time to start things back up ![]() I've also come to the realization that I'm just not a steady painter like a lot of the guys here. Deadley, SpikyJames, Digits, Jase, Wolvie... guys like you inspire me, but I can never produce like you. When I get the itch, I can pump out a lot of work of a fairly high quality (at least for me) in a short amount of time, but then the itch goes away and I barely want to pick up a brush for awhile. With that in mind, I'm going to say this from the start: I have no friggin' clue when or how often this will get updated. Sporadic would probably be the catchphrase for this thread Now that that's out of the way, let's begin... First off, the workspace: ![]() Pretty simple and straight-forward. Now then, some recent projects: Dwarves: ![]() About 95% done, just need to wrap up the unit of Hammerers (using Miners as a counts-as, will be supported in their fluff) and their Thane, then decide if I want to paint the drudge pony from the BFSP box or not. Warden Lions (DIY Marines): ![]() ![]() Around 85%-ish done. Need to paint a few individual models, sort a veteran squad out (leaning towards Sternguard, but they'd require a bigger purchase), and possibly buy a Termie squad. My next project: ![]() ORKS! This is the Spearhead, plus a couple other models (Kommandos, a Nob, and a Warboss). I should be able to start slowly adding to them soonish, but for now I'll be painting what I have. I also have a fully-painted 1,500 point army of Eldar (actually, it's probably more than that by now), and have been working on painting up more of my collection of them. You may see some of them interspersed with the Orks. Further down the pipeline are a Salamanders Marine army, a Steel Legion IG army, and one or more of a few possibilities. I'm kicking around Dark Eldar (once they're re-done), Space Wolves, Nids, and a Vampire Counts Fantasy army based loosely around Brian Lumley's Wamphyri novels. So, hopefully I'll have some more updates for y'all soon. Oh, and before I go, the obligatory pet shot of my two baby kitties:

Nice start to a new log - its always nice to get your projects into some sort of order now and then, mine currently lack this amount of focus - something I'll have to rectify! |

Ask for closeups on anything and if I don't already have it, I'll sort something out for ya.
*snort* Compared to me, you're just about at Deadley-level when it comes to steadiness ![]() Thanks for the support guys. Because of some familial things that have come up (sister in law is having a meltdown, so my ex and I are taking her boys for a couple of days), I don't think I'll have much of anything new to post until Monday or Tuesday, but next week'll be slow at work, so I may be able to get a fair amount done. |

Minor update, been flailing at the Orks, but haven't done much. Just not inspired with 'em at the moment... So I've been toying with a little bit of OSL on a spare model. Nothing too dramatic, took a Witch Hunter Acolyte and played some light from his big ol' torch along his arm, head, and book. I want to tweak the colours of the flame itself a bit, but for some reason attempts to lighten the base of it just aren't showing well. Anyhow, the pics: ![]() ![]() Came out a bit better than the OSL on my libby did, but it still doesn't quite seem "there" to me yet. Maybe a "good" OSL is still somewhat beyond my skills at this point, I dunno, or maybe I'm just being a perfectionist. As for the Orks, I think my issue with them is their scheme. I've been doing a Goff scheme for 'em as I figured it'd be simpler, but I'm just not feeling it. Working on test schemes for Deffskulls and Bad Moons at the moment, should have something postable by tomorrow evening. |

That is one on the most difficult things to paint from my point of view. The one thing I have ever heard about that is, that the colors on which the light should reflect, should be rather dark, so with some light drybrushing (from a little dark, to a rather light color). Probaly not much help, but it is deffenetly better then I can ever fix. And for your orcs, did you try an blood axes sceme? Not one of the most used clans of orcs, but a very funny armie to me. |

There are two colours in there, orange under yellow. I would have done a red in there as well, but his robes were already the red I would have used... I'm glad that the technique you described is the one I used tho, means my "how the heck should I go about doing this" thought process was right for a change ![]() Blood axes I considered briefly, started a tester of one and then stopped. Couldn't make it look anywhere NEAR what I wanted. Just not that great at camo, much less using a couple different ones on one model. |

Deffskull Kommando!![]() ![]() ![]() Rather chuffed with how he came out, and I think he looks MUCH better than most of the Goffs I've painted up. Don't think I'll do the face painting that the Codex has on some of the Deffskulls in it, not very keen on the idea based on other Deffskull armies I've seen. Bad Moonz Tankbusta still WIP, I'll post a comparison of the three schemes once he's finished. I also noticed I hadn't put up a pic of my Warboss yet in this thread... such a shame given it's Orky beginnings ![]() ![]() Also, now that I've started my new job and am making decent money again, I'm planning on picking up a Black Reach box at some point in the near future, largely as I could use all the minis in it and still don't have a 5th ed book yet (damn being broke). Marines will go into my Warden Lions army to legalize them under the new Marine 'dex (not enough Tacticals with that silly rule having to have a full squad to get special or Heavy weapons...) and the Orks go to, well, my Ork army... Considering buying two, tho. The two loads of Orks would virtually finish my Ork army aside from a few vehicles and a few more Elites Orks, and the second group of Marines would either further reinforce my Warden Lions or start up my Salamanders. Not sure whether I'll buy a second one soon, tho, maybe later in the year. |

Your Orks look good Alt. By the way, your nickname is now Alt. Here's the tut I used for my first couple testers and the Deff Dread: http://www.coolminiornot.com/go.php/go/articlephp/aid/725? I need to settle on a good competitive Ork list before I commit to buying anything other than another AoBR set. *edit*: I'm not a steady painter either, I feel your pain. -scrubout Edited by scrubout, 5 Sep 2008, 09:46 PM.

Yup I like the Kommando. I once painted some orks with blue faces and they came out pretty cool (blue and green are often very complimentary). Good attempt at the lighting on the accolyte. I've always been too afraid of painting the model then running the risk of me ruining it with the light! So I won't try it.

Ah well, better than the nickname I had from my old online handle ![]() Cheers for the tut, tho I was specifically hoping for the guide on how you mixed up your acrylic washes. Maybe another time ![]() You and I seem to have a lot of our bursts of activity around the same time, too. Little odd, no? ![]()
Part of why I did the tester on the Acolyte was the fact that I knew I'd likely never use the thing... I bought the blister of Witchhunter henchies for the servo-skull and the Crusader more than the two Acolytes. Update! Bad Moonz Tankbusta finished. Ish. Well enough for the comparison anyhow. Just needs a few more details. ![]() And the three together: ![]() I think I like the Deffskull more, but the yellow would definitely pop on the table. Takes a bit longer to paint, tho. Definitely up for input on which you guys like more. |

I'd be inclined to try a little flesh ink on the yellow, give it some depth but otherwise cool! |

Might do that or chestnut. I was really disappointed at how flat it came out, there's about five or six layers of colour in there built from Bestial Brown to Desert Yellow to Sunburst to Bad Moon Yellow... EDIT - The Bad Moon got hit with some Chestnut and looks a bit better. Also started work on the rest of the Kommandos in the Deffskull theme. Really starting to lean towards that at the moment, but we'll see. I'll probably finish the Tankbustas in Bad Moonz colors to get the full shot comparison. Pics in the morning after I run to the store, camera's batteries died and I seem to be out of AA's... Edited by Althanan, 6 Sep 2008, 03:14 AM.

ACK! Sorry, wow, didn't expect to see you there... I guess I have a legit excuse for the two-and-a-half month absence this time. A few days after the last update, I was involved in a nasty wreck. Got rear-ended on my way home from work with the person that hit me going 45 MPH, and then that person got hit, too, at roughly the same speed. My Trooper was almost shockingly fine after the accident (worst visible damage: cracks and a shift in the bumper and a bit of crumpling on one of the rear quarter panels). Apparently, there are main-line tanks built softer than a 1998 Isuzu Trooper The other two cars were totaled, neither was even remotely drivable. My back was another story. I've been going to a chiropractor at least three times a week since then, and only in the last few weeks have I been able to pick up a paintbrush. That said, I've managed to make significant progress since then. For starters, I purchased the Battle for Black Reach box and painted all the Marines within 24 hours, minus some minor work still to do on the Termies. With that, some creative restructuring of squads (and occasionally models), and the purchase of a Sternguard squad, I present to thee, a strike force from the Warden Lions' Second Company: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There'll also be a Drop Pod, but my fiancee kipped it and threw it into the Xmas pile before I could open it... I'm pleased with how the army has come out, it looks AWESOME on the tabletop. It's been in two games thus far, one against Daemons (bloody hell are Bloodletters hard...) and one against Nurgle Chaos. Lost horribly against the Daemons, partly due to some fantastically lucky Deep Strike rolls and some atrocious rolling of my own. Beat the Nurgle Marines relatively handily, due in no small way to a Sergeant and a Meltagunner each holding off Typhus and a kitted out Lord, respectively, for far more turns of combat than they should have, allowing for support to some and finish off the threats. Only a small amount of progress on the Orks, one squad of Boys done: ![]() Flesh isn't nearly that flat in person, though I may go back and add another highlight. Went with Deffskulls, though the Tankbustas and maybe one or two units of Shootas will be Bad Moonz. Also, I was sitting up in bed unable to sleep thanks to my back, and decided to continue using my Cadians after all, and will expand them into a proper army. The scheme I have come up with: ![]() And then a finished squad, plus an officer and a Kasrkin (same scheme but with black fatigues), and then a few more WIP: ![]() ![]() Much happier with this scheme than my old gray-on-gray with blue scheme for them. Also, I've started using Foundation paints and the new washes, and I'm really pleased with the results. Aside from Scorched Brown on the leather and Boltgun Metal on their guns and other metal details, the Cadians are 95% Foundation and Washes. Ditto with the Orks done since the last update. The washes add a depth to the cloth and skin that I'd been unable to achieve before. Thoughts, comments, and rotten veggies welcome. Edited by Althanan, 24 Nov 2008, 03:20 AM.
