Well, for the past few days I've been having a brainstorming session, over what Space Marine chapter I next want to build and paint. Yes, I know, everyone has or will go Marines at some point, and I've had several armies over the years. But never one of my own creation. It's always been a Founding Legion. This time it's different. This time I've got a few spare Marines sitting around on their sprues, and I want to do something different with them. Over the last few years, ever since the 4th edition Marine codex came out, I've occassionally thrown out the odd idea for a unique Chapter. Well, now I've managed to start coalescing them into a history of what will be my new Chapter. Hopefully in a couple of weeks or so, once Gamesday is out the way, I'll have the time to create a new project log with which to start this army (along with a few others), but hopefully in the meantime, this will be an interesting read for those of you wanting to do so! But, without further ado, here's the first part... The Saga of the Fire Wolves ‘And the noble Brothers did plunge into the fiery abyss. Salvation for beloved comrades, and death for loathed tyrants. They rent asunder the shackles that bound; with divine fury. Wolves and drakes did thus swear allegiance.’ Chapter I. Verse I. ‘The Saga of the Fire Wolves’. The Beginning The origin of the noted Fire Wolves Chapter of the Adeptus Astartes began early at the dawn of the 33rd Millennium. As had happened fully five times previously, a decree was passed from the High Lords of Terra. A Seventh Founding of Adeptus Astartes was to begin with all due haste, in order to combat the various new threats arising in the Imperium of Man, and to better reinforce those from without. Buoyed by the success of mixing gene-seeds from previous Legions in the Sixth Founding, the High Lords instructed that the entire Seventh Founding, 25 Chapters in total, be of mixed origin, so as to better spread the various desired traits throughout the Imperium, and thus, better allow their strengths to be on as many battlefields as possible, without requirement for lengthy warp-travel. For the Fire Wolves; at the time known as Chapter 198 – Angelic Panthers, it was determined that a mix of the Ultramarines and White Scars gene seeds would provide the best result for what would be their eventual area of deployment. While both had strong traits of honour and discipline, it was hoped that the purity of the former and the clinical savagery of the latter would result in a force much akin to that of the point of a spear. Able to be utilized in line, but able to strike with but a moments notice, brush aside all attempts at deflection, and strike true at the target. The Hakar Sector, to the Galactic north of the Ork Empire of Charadon was chosen as the ideal location for which the new Chapter would be based. With a Waaagh having only just been halted several decades previously, it was thought that the addition of Chapter would not only stall any attempts at expansion, but also allow a strong position from which to aid strike missions to hinder the potential rise of another Waaagh. After over a century of gestation, the first batches of gene seeds were harvested from their inert biological hosts, and implanted into the bodies of nearly two and a half thousand men, all Terran stock. Although there were failures; even amongst the finest potential Astartes, there were some whose bodies were unable to cope with the changes being wrought on their internal organs and physical form, by the end of the process, nearly 80% of the initial stock had survived. Divided into their proto-Chapter organizations, they undertook close to a decade of martial training. While they had been raised from birth for this purpose, another cog in the machine geared towards the Seventh Founding, they had not experienced fighting alongside one another as Astartes. Warriors from all over the Imperium taught these young warriors their violent art. Honour bound by ancient edicts, they travelled from far and wide to pass down their knowledge and skills, moulding the trainees into what the High Lords desired. Imperial Space Marines. During this time though, the future home worlds were not left untouched. Imperial preachers and scholars over the decades preceding the arrival of the Chapters spent time amongst the indigenous population. Spinning their webs of religion, fervour and half-truths, they created the myths that would herald the coming Space Marines as the Emperor’s hand. Over time, the populations embraced these teachings into their culture. When the Space Marines arrived, they would find whole civilizations geared towards providing them with eager aspirants for their ranks. The Adeptus Mechanicus honoured their part of the High Lords edict in a different, but no less important manner. High in orbit around Mars, Gryphonne IV, Stygies VIII and many other forgeworlds, the mechanical artisans set about their task. Metals and ores plundered from the ground of countless worlds, promethium harvested and processed from numerous sources, plasma energy created at man’s behest, and then caged by metallic sorcery. All combined to create the armada that would power the Seventh Founding across the stars. On the smog shrouded plains below, continental sized factories methodically manufactured the armour, vehicles and weapons that would arm the Chapters as they done the Emperor’s Work. Their task also extended towards preparing the mighty citadels from which the Chapters would reside. Giant excavators and explosive charges levelled whole mountain ranges for foundations for the bastions. Armies of indentured workers, numbering more than some Imperial Army Groups at the time, set about their back-breaking task. With the blood and sweat of these nameless men, walls were raised, towers and spires constructed, orbital defences sunk, and haven’s secured. Their tasks complete, the survivors were formed into penal legions, and dashed against the foes of Mankind. There would be no-one besides the highest ranked members of the Imperium who would know of any weaknesses in the construction of these holds. Not even the Astartes, who would inhabit them, would be allowed to learn of any. It was an insurance policy, that mankind had learned it needed at great cost in the calamity of the Horus Heresy… |

Having read this last night I have to say its looking good. I always meant to write some fluff for bits of pieces and never did. Maybe I will for my DH stuff. |

It's a very well written piece so far but I have a problem with one item. I've been around since 40K version 2 and have read (or own) nearly all of GW's works with official fluff(rulebooks, codices, WD, etc...) and to my knowledge the only time that geneseed was mixed was the Cursed Founding. The results were so bad that the AdMech swore never to do it again (or were ordered not to, it's not clear which). If you've run across something contrary to this, I'd be very interested in seeing it. As I'm typing this I seem to recall something about the Relictors maybe having mixed geneseed but that's not certain and I don't have my reference materials here at work. Regardless, I look forward to seeing more of this.

Well, I certaintly didn't know that, and didn't know anyone who did. Hence my reasoning behind choosing one of the earlier foundings. So little's been written about them, or expanded on, that it was easy to come up with something that wouldn't run the risk of putting someone's nose out of line as if it had come from one of the second, or more recent foundings; and easily allow ret-conning in future if needed! I'm sure I read something about the Relictors however; but I'll have to have a look at what I've got as well. Looking back on what I've written so far, as well as what I've begun for the second part, there is a lot of explaining and improvement to be done once I get started again. I know the first article was only the foundations for my fluff, Cheers very much mate! And yes, mixed gene-seed does allow for a little bit of an allowance when writing fluff I find, or can explain a personal preponderance towards a certain unit, for example. Right, I may as well take this opportunity to say that when I next get around to posting up the Fire Wolves history, certain people; namely Space Wolves fans, will no doubt want to wring my neck. Still, I've placed references to the Imperium having plans in place to annihilate the Fire Wolves if they ever turn from the Emperor's Light, and there have been traitors in the SW's... just look at the Astral Claws for one example... |
